Critical Swim Speed (CSS) training is widely used in swim sessions around the globe. At Do3 we have used it for years at our daily squad sessions. It is the recommended method of many coaches and is promoted by swimming and triathlon organisations including by British Triathlon here in the UK.
Generally, CSS training works well but given our lengthy experience using this type of training, we have identified pitfalls and have actually stopped using it altogether in our daily swim squad training sessions. This video is about the good and bad elements of CSS training and look at what we now use instead.

I am a slow long distance swimmer and began using the Finis Stroke trainer last month. ALL my times have improved: From 100m all the way up through to 3km. I started slow with Mode 3 on 40 strokes for a week (about 3 or 4 swims), then in increments of +1 for the following week and so on. My 400m time has gone from 10:22 to 8:48 in 5 weeks.
Note: I am 64 and only started swimming last August doing breaststroke then switched to front crawl in February. The trainer works (I am not paid to advertise this) and I would recommend it to anyone who is serious (or frustrated) about getting smoother and faster. You get smoother by concentrating on technique as your timing is being taken care of.
You can also play around with Modes 1 & 2 and make your own ‘fun’ challenges.
