  • Composer Alessandro Mastroianni dives into the main patch for the new Poiesis Cello virtual instrument, Textures.
    sonoracinemati...
    We love organic textures and we love extended techniques: this is why we made Poiesis Cello.
    Poiesis Cello will allow you to instantly create beautiful (or beautifully ugly!) soundscapes that
    will inspire new music the first time you touch the keyboard.
    The instrument recorded is a 1995 Moes & Moes cello built for and owned by Yo-Yo Ma and
    played by Alan Black, principal cellist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.
    Poiesis cello was recorded in a dry studio with three high-end microphones placed relatively
    close to the instrument, to offer an intimate sound that you can shape as you please.
    Poiesis Cello is the first chapter in the Poiesis solo strings series

    Oh man! Just came across this. This is so beautifully recorded, performed and put together. I'm new to Sonora (thanks to audio plugin deals doing a Magnetism deal)) and this is just so great too. Too bad i'm skint right now, but it's at the top of my shopping list. Great price too. Very affordable considering the work gone in. Thank you, Alessandro and Sonora!

    • @SonoraCinematic
      @SonoraCinematic  Před 2 lety +3

      We don’t exclude it, we have done about 10 hours of test recordings with legato and even built a basic legato engine exploring the possibility. The priority will be to complete the string family (viola, violin, double bass) and there’s definitely the possibility we’ll add a legato patch after that.

      @@ricardodasilva9184 thank you for your question!
      Our scope for this instrument was specifically to create an instrument heavily focused on textures with a particular attention to the sound (the goal that we set was to have something that made you feel as you were right in front of the cello) so legato wasn’t a priority. We also think that there are already some great options on the market that we love and that we could bring something new doing something radically different.
      That said, just as we made a complementary patch that focuses on short articulations (walkthrough on that coming soon), there’s certainly space for a complementary legato patch in the future!

  • @soundsgoodtome

    Congrats on a unique and creative library. That said, I notice that in this walkthrough a number of notes being played are out of tune. Of course I fully understand the concept of capturing a wide range of unusual articulations. But tuning is a separate issue.
    For example, at 0:27, the C you play drifts slightly sharp, and then the following G is slightly flat.
    At 0:54, the C-minor interval you play is out of tune.
    At 4:52, the tremolo is quite sharp, and then the tremolo immediately following at 5:00 is closer to a pure C. The difference between the two notes is disturbing.
    At 5:42, the tremolo sul tasto is quite sharp and crossfades at 5:33 to tremolo mezzo piano which is strikingly lower in pitch.
    That's four examples, just in the first six minutes of your walkthrough! I want to love this library, but I'm very concerned about the tuning, and since I assume the samples are locked, we won't be able to tune them ourselves within the instrument, forcing us to record one part at a time and use pitch-correction. (And we shouldn't have to resort to that.)
    So, my question-one day before your introductory sale ends-is: Are you willing to address these pitch issues? I'm concerned that there could be many more examples of poor tuning throughout the library.
    I should add that I have similar string libraries by other developers (e.g., several by Felt instruments), which feature unusual articulations and where tuning has never been an issue. I'd love to purchase this library, but I need to know that these issues will be corrected. 😊

      @SonoraCinematic  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Mervyn!
      Thank you for your message and your support email, I’ve replied there as well.
      Most of the examples you mention come from the four textural articulations that were recorded explicitly asking the player to slightly drift in pitch while playing so that was exactly the sound we were trying to achieve by these unique articulations.
      The library is full of other articulations that have been carefully tuned (including a very good sounding “Normale”).
      That said, there are a couple of pitchy samples that we’re currently tweaking and will be released soon on a 1.1 update such as the tremolo you mention and a staccato note that generates an overtone when played fortissimo on two round robins, but they’re not many, as I said the 4 textural articulations have that particular drift in the pitch on purpose.
      Finally, depends on what you mean by “the samples are locked”: being the library a Kontakt Player library with NKS integration the samples are indeed encoded but by choice we kept the library unlocked (you can get into the back of Kontakt and make changes provided that you know what you’re doing) so if you wanted you could alter the tuning there. Loading the articulation in question on Layer B and using the pitch bend is also an option.
      Hope this answers your question!

    • @soundsgoodtome
      @soundsgoodtome Před 2 lety

      @@SonoraCinematic I appreciate your reply. Respectfully, these examples don't sound like intentional drifts in pitch. They sound like poor intonation.
      When you play a chord or an interval, as you do in this walkthrough, and that chord or interval is out of tune, that's not "intentional drift." That's bad intonation. These are individual notes that are slightly flat or slightly sharp-in articulations in which other notes are perfectly in tune. So, we're to believe that you instructed the players to play only certain notes out of tune, while leaving other notes in tune? 🤔
      There's also no indication that the performers were instructed to start in tune and then "drift" sharp or flat, as has been done in other libraries where that was clearly the intent. Furthermore, articulations like that are typically NAMED as such, so it's clear what's to be expected by those performances. Your articulations say NOTHING about pitch drift. Respectfully, these notes-random notes within individual articulations-are simply out of tune.
      I love the concept of this library, but this, for me, is a fatal flaw. When composing, I don't have time to correct the pitch of individual bad notes that occur within an articulation. I need libraries to be ready to play.
      I bear no ill will toward you. I truly hope you'll decide to correct these issues. Fix the tuning-throughout the instrument-and I'll be the first to buy it. 😊 But in its current state, it's unusable.

    Please re-enable the youtube player controls on your website. Every single user wants control over the volume, timeline, and play/pause controls. Who thought it was a good idea to hide them? You may need a new web developer because a half-decent one would know that's a big no-no.
