It’s the first brand new Boss pedal I bought in February 1990 and I still have it. I’ve had a MIJ too and sold it, and I own the 40th Black model just for my collection. A Waza edition doesn’t appeal to me at all as I haven’t used the DS-1 since 1994. It’s a very predictable sound that’s a bit too fizzy for me, but when you’re a kid it makes a crap amp sound fantastic!

What's the best Waza pedal to get if you have a DS-1? I was curious because I like their chorus and the dimension pedal, but some of the pricing discrepancies seem to be lackluster compared to ease of entry of most their lineup. I have been wanting to purchase, but I am hesitant and try out gear when I can (my local shop has nothing and box stores are stingy). If you answer back, thank you!

As a 14 year old just starting to play guitar, this was my first distortion pedal oh it sounded great because I didn't know any better. But 40 years later I got a DS1 from somebody and I thought the thing sounded like crap. I just didn't like it and it totally pushed me towards the mxr stuff. I eventually got to where I was using a Peavey valve king that was highly modified while I was playing out. I love the tone of that thing the problem was when I went to play leads the sustain wasn't where I would like it to be. That's the same issue I find with a lot of distortion and overdrive pedals they sound great playing rhythm but when I wanted to start screaming to play leads and cut through I had to use something else added to the distortion or overdrive pedal.
So now that I don't play out any longer and had to sell all my stuff , I use a little 10 watt Peavey amp, I'm pretty satisfied with using an mxr distortion 3 for a classic rock sound/overdrive and I just recently acquired a super badass distortion which I use for more metal stuff and it has a midrange control on it that lets the leads cut through and it has a lot more sustain. Top dollar stuff, no but it's all I can afford and my little apartment rig finally sounds usable. I would love to be able to afford one of these little mini soldanos or one of the bogners and try that out and just get rid of most of my distortion and overdrive pedals but I just don't have the budget for it.
Now that I've rambled about a bunch of crap let's just say I still don't like the sound of the DS1 even though they've done something to it and jacked the price up.

The MIJ DS-1 of the 80's is a bit better but they are still bad pedals. The Waza is the MIJ version with an extra mode but the market right now has so many better sounding pedals so, can't really see this doing as well as they think it will.

Oh yes, I have also swapped a diode with a LED, classic mod with more output, more mids... It sounds good though, I love playing with my Ds1s

Andy can even make a goddamn DS-1 sound good. That being said, waza craft pedals are such cash grabs. The waza tuner for example lol.

Custom mode is a boost in other words- that's a bit disappointing to be honest. Not sure what I was expecting but- not that. I'm sure it will be just what the doctor ordered for DS-1 fans, but it doesn't make a convert of me. Never cared for the DS-1, still don't. I don't like fizz- I like growl- my favorite distortion is Deizel and/or Friedman- they both sound amazing. Sometimes I like the 5150 to but, other times- not so much, depends on how it's setup and who is playing it, I guess. Eddie made it sound amazing.
Oh- and I should mention the Alairex HALO j.r.- I bought one on a whim, never heard of it before- this thing is shockingly good. I've never seen a pedal that reacts like an amp like this pedal does- it cleans up when you turn down, responds to pick attack, and stacks with other effects exactly like an amp. They're not cheap nor easy to find, they're no longer made but I'm telling you- if you want that Marshal JCM900 sound from an analogue pedal and you want it to respond like an amp- the HALO j.r. is that pedal. Why Alairex is no longer around after making such a great drive, no idea. This is the only pedal they released, that I can find. I've A/B'ed this thing against 300-400$ drives that don't sound as convincing nor respond as well. I don't know if the Marshal JCM900 was even what they were going for but- that's what it sounds like to me- maybe not quite as crunchy.

I always hated how there was no change in the volume when engaged. I’m curious, on the custom mode is there actually a significant volume boost that is noticeable when I engage it at 100%? Should I sell my Ds1 and get this new one? Thanks in advance if anyone responds.
