  • In this episode, I dive deep into the inspection process of two old excavators with log grapples, previously used at a port for loading logs onto ships. These machines, though outdated, could be perfect for selectively and sustainably harvesting trees from my forest.

    Hi Marty after watching this video I have been talking to someone who works in the Picton log yard. He said that machine wouldn't move and when they had to shift it they picked it with the Cat 988. Just as well you waked away from it. They think they both went to the same wreaker yard.

    I know I'm late commenting but a few more things to check when buying a used machine is have someone set the stick down and put just enough pressure on it like you are going to lift the tracks up and then release the pressure you can tell how much play is in the pins and the rotec bearing as well also swing side to at the same time. Tracks don't really wear out like dozer tracks most of the wear will be from the pads being twisted running over stuff.

    I also looked at buying one of these, getting a machine of this age and condition of about this size is very difficult now, so many people with farms and big lifestyle blocks want them. Similar but more tidy examples of this size/age go for around 30 - 40k and that is just with one or two buckets, no grapple. I didn't bid in the end, but probably should have.

They repair BIG equipment like Bull dozers & Excavators, used Military equipment etc. When I saw the 9000 price for that old piece, I thought it was too high. The real cost of fixing that stuff (if you can still get parts) is outrageous. I think you are lucky to not own either of those, especially if they have been near water their entire lives.

    I wonder if whoever won those auctions personally inspected the excavators, and if they, how thoroughly? I suspect not as thoroughly as you did. More fool them. Those prices were higher than I expected - they appeared to have good engines and decent hydraulics, but that dented cylinder rod could be a problem, and the undercarriages did not look super flash. That was a lot of rust on the Picton one. I thought I heard Waikawa mentioned, but I am wondering if it was at Shakespeare Bay, seeing as that's were most of the logs go out. If you went by SH62 rather than QCD, you'd have almost passed by my house at the top of Hammerichs in Rapaura. You should drop in for a cuppa if you pass that way again, and I'll show you my workshop (wood).

    I imagine that some of these machines used in non-traditional specialty jobs could have a ridiculous amount of wear on the boom or rotating assembly while having little to no wear on their crawling assembly

    I've had my share of auction successes and regrets. Luckily mine are very small potatoes compared to the cost of an excavator. All you can do is your due diligence to make an informed decision.

    i have been looking for an excavator for almost a year and what I have learned is never buy something from the mining or forestry industry

    First one was a better unit in my opinion. The final drive fix is a bit of a job but one guy can do it fine. The price to fix would of put you up there however. The engine sounded super. Lot's of rust on both and i would keep away from the ports if possible. Thanks

    there are always people that bid way too high for equipment and vehicles.. its pretty old and worn .. if they're getting rid of it then they feel its no longer useful for them so you have to keep that in mind.

      I agree.. This was a $1 starting auction, this draws a lot of people in, some of them may not realize the cost of having to replace or recondition a travel motor.

    I used to work on heavy equipment & from what I can see it has been well used but not abused. For a girl that old I'd say she still has a life to live for the person who is willing togive her a chance. That being said, I don't know her complete history so expect some small surprised down the road. I believe investing in anolog equipment is a good thing since modern equipment needs electronic chips & they are getting hard to come by, look at all the Ford trucks just sitting waiting for chips before they can be sold.

    Don't forget also that your need for buying one of these is likely temporary - once you have logged out your land and don't need it anymore then you can just sell it off and if it's still in good shape possibly break even.

    @Marty T what’s the economic dollar difference for you to contract out the whole harvest by a contractor verses you buying the snigger,loader with the grapple and trucking it to the mill.Beside that as a stand alone option you could just sell it to the mill and they have to harvest it,less profit but you don’t have machines sitting for 25 years for next harvest.Just a thought.Is this viable???

    • @MartyT
      @MartyT  Před měsícem +5

      Yep there is a lot to weigh up.. at this stage it looks like the best option for my small stand is to selectively harvest and sell by the truckload while still retaining the carbon credits.. This might change in the next few years depending on what direction the government steers the NZETS scheme

    Around Canada. Big machines go for cheap. It's the mini excavators that get big near new money???? I thing both were a good deal however the first also had the buckets.

    • @MattsAwesomeStuff
      @MattsAwesomeStuff Před měsícem +2

      Yeah, the rule of the thumb in Canada is the bigger the machine, the cheaper. Everyone can use a little machine. Few people want a bigger one, and downtime is scarier than cost, so anyone who needs a big one....needs a big one that doesn't break down.
