That's nuts! It adds a whole new meaning to the word 'endurance'. That took huge guts to persevere in such conditions, particularly as a lone rider. As for Raynaud's, I really feel for you. My wife suffers from this condition and it can be really grim and very painful. Kudos for sticking it out so far. 👍

That cat on your lap was so sweet. Nice dog too. yeah it is sooo challenging in cold, wind, rain and HILL to sweat up. 2x and big cassette helps. And Win Hoff training! Lovely cafe stops and that place you stayed. Someone needs to invent a plug in base layer, you plug yourself in at cafe stops and it dries you out like an elec blanket. Soon gonna get wet again though! Maybe someone needs to invent smart lamposts you can plug into to charge kit up. Small charge.
Multiple day Endurance events are something else entirely, it is not your neibourhood friendly crit, it just takes you places, especially inside your head… You are tough Jul, it is just some times mother Nature takes you through all the bad alleys. Keep the spirits high. 🫡
Takes me back to when I rode 4000km up and down Chile & Argentina..
A quote i always remember is - ' if we made a decision based on the best of our knowledge at the time - it was the right decision'.

the weather is very unpredictable in the Andes but this was somewhat unusual, given the time of year (spring)
Most endurance races seem to end up as calorie consuming races.

The challange for me in this focused short-time-frame approach to an ultra distance ride is that it does not look like a lot of fun. I appreciate the challenge is in the distance, the experience and epic nature of battling fatigue and distance giving you a sense of achievement. However, with night riding and constant rain it does not look like you get to experience the country and it looks like a lonely fight against tiredness and rain.
Amazing effort though and well done. I could not do that sort of distance myself and think its an amazing achievement. Maybe if you had more luck with sunnier days, the whole thing would have felt different. It looks like you had some beautifully scenery between the storms.

Ultras are brutal even in the best sunny conditions. Altitude makes everything way more cold. One thing I learned years ago. Hopefully you completed it 🤞🏻

thanks for being brutally honest about your experience of whilst doing this trip. Always good to hear the real deal however, good bad or ugly it may be.
I was hoping you'd stop there but I fear you decided to go on and keep going regardless; honestly that's what I would have done myself just because I'm precisely that kind of stubborn slightly obsessive mind that wants to make it at all costs.

i have raynauds and it is the absolute worst with damp cold. It can feel like your hands have been set on fire when you finally come back into the warm and chillblains can last for weeks. no joke!

It was brutal from what friends and you posted on instagram. I even saw frozen bikes under the snow. Nice that you enjoyed it anyway 😅 and also that you tried our marraquetas and sopaipillas.

Whether that’s true or not, I wasn’t. It’s one solitary tea bag at a sitting, which I replenish repeatedly with hot water. So probably about two tea bags a day, if I’m lucky!
