    The bike trails around Melbourne are fantastic. They go for hundreds of kilometres. They take you through the most beautiful scenery.

    Once again Stef, you are making me miss Melbourne. I would Open up the Melways and plan a bike ride. With all the reserves and foot paths, the roads that are dead ends for cars, are nice uncrowded connected paths for bikes. You may not realize it, but Melbourne is a dream for bicycling. Enjoy the warm weather.

    Melbourne has quite a lot of completely separate bicycle paths. They're great for recreational bike riding but they don't always go where you need to go if you're commuting, visiting friends or running errands.
    You can ride from Williamstown -> Reservoir -> Diamond Creek -> Frankston -> St Kilda -> stop in the city for dinner and back to Williamstown in a big 177Km loop without going on any on-road painted bike lanes.

    I think you're putting the bike pump onto the valve the wrong way. The lever stays down when you put it on and when it's on you pull the lever up. And the reverse to take it off.

    It's funny, I'm a committed cyclist and I'm pretty sure I've ridden every part of the CCT (even noticed you calling the Merri Creek the 'river' for narrative convenience 😅) but I've never actually done it as a single complete loop even though both I and my partner live within a couple of hundred metres of it (on the north and south sides.) Should do that - maybe during some of the super-summery weather we're going to have over the next week! 😂

    As a committed cyclist here in Brum Stef...I'm surprised the cycle lanes on the main roads in Melbourne are just as bad as ours...Though I appreciate the route you took was much more like it should be, kept separate from the cars. Makes so much more sense and safer for all concerned ,But scenic cycle route don't usually help commuters and such like. Glad you have some summery weather at last down there so you can get out and about after all the rain you guys have had in recent weeks. Great content and video as always . Take care down there!

    I did the same anti-clockwise loop back in October, starting from Hawksburn station. Like you I also got a bit lost with all the bridge closures, but resorted to using GPS on my phone pretty quickly. It's great that the loop exists but navigating parts of it can be incredibly frustrating. It's also dangerously narrow in some places.
    There is a way to bypass the Gipps Street steps altogether by taking a few back streets to Clarke Street and rejoining the Yarra trail there. Necessary if you ride a recumbent bike, trike or a heavy ebike.
    A bit further up it's easy to take the wrong turn at Trenerry Street. The trick is to cross the river twice, using two footbridges just a few hundred metres apart. Completely illogical but that's how it is. It's a shame the signage is so poor.
    I think I got lost again at Heidelberg Road. The signs don't tell you to ride under the bridge.
    The trail still doesn't bypass Rushall station after all these years. It wouldn't be that hard for them to fix.
    Royal Park station is another place where you can get lost, where the trail splits in two. One fork follows the tram line then abruptly stops at the Elliot Avenue crossing in Royal Park. Don't go that way.
    When I eventually reached Flinders Street I got stuck. There were road closures everywhere. I had no idea the Melbourne Marathon was on. Whoops!

    • @stef747
      @stef747 Před rokem

      I took a wrong turn at Heidelberg Road too, didn't include that in the video! Yeah it's a bit fiddly under Rushall Station to dismount and walk around the commuters you're right. Nice tip about avoiding the steps thanks, I'll use that next time I do the loop.

    Another good loop is the Gardiners Creek trail from Burnley to East Malvern, then the Anniversary Trail to Kew, then the Yarra Trail back to Burnley. It has its own navigation problems so you'll still need to consult your phone now and then. It's less busy though.

      I’ve lived in Melbourne for over 60 years , Melbourne does cover a lot of area , and much of it does go unnoticed to many of the locals sadly.
      On the north side of Melbourne, we have some pretty decent bike paths , you can go north, south. east or west , from northern burbs you can get about 98% of the way into the city by dedicated bike paths.

    I like old Melbourne, one thing I don’t agree on is the constant need for some to feel the need to punish car drivers who just want to get around the city , this includes the Lord Mayor.
    Cars are not the problem, it’s the lack of decent roads and infrastructure , parking and never ending bottlenecks .
    If you need to do business or even just go shopping in the city and find parking , the councillors have done a good job at making it an absolute horrible experience . Crucifying car drivers that pay an arm and a leg for the privilege of owning a car makes people want to no longer visit the city.
    And not everyone wants to be crammed on trams like sardines standing room only.
    I used to live near the mcg in my younger days , I hate going into the city now.
    More dedicated bike paths not on busy roads would be a good thing for cyclists and motorists.

    Fully agree, bike paths in Melbourne are way behind with the rest of the world. But more importantly is the motorist attitude towards bike riders, that is absolutely appalling sometimes. This needs to change. But that will take time.

    • @stef747
      @stef747 Před rokem +1

      For a city which is usually very progressive, I think there's a lot more that could be done to open up cycling to more 'amateur' riders like myself. But I worry cars are such a part of Australian life that it would take a lot of attitudes to change before that happened.
