Understanding audio is crucial to becoming a content creator on Twitch, and it’s also one of the biggest barriers because people can’t tell when it is bad, or if they can they don’t know how to fix it.
Before I became an online Content Creator and Streamer, I was in the film industry for over six years, and audio was always something that stumped people despite it being really easy once you get the basics of it down.
Today I am going to help you get set up and sound like a pro on your stream.

To truly make your microphone sound amazing, you’re going to want to learn to use filters in your broadcast software. Now all three of these filters exist in slobs and obs, I’d recommend using them almost all the time, They are Noise Suppression, A limiter, and a Noise gate.

Hey #earlygang! Hopefully the message of this video comes across pretty simple, you can't beat high quality microphone or audio setups, but at the end of the day when you're just starting out, there is no point spending hundreds, or thousands of dollars on gear that you don't need. Hope everyone is having a good week so far!

Uhm, I just invented new monitors and headphones yesterday, and I can beat the supposed "high-end" setups. Fairly easily and with much less expense. There is absolutely no way I would buy anything UAD for instance, because of their atrocious policies of not supplying guarantees with their "high-end" hardware, because they try to bundle demo software with it to try and use that as an excuse for their inferiority.

I'm using this video as a motivator to get my OBS and mic setup going on my gaming laptop. I've watched a few other videos that pretty much cover the same topic here, however when it comes to streaming setups I like to have a 2nd and 3rd opinion and take a little bit of advice from each. Also in the budget mic group but it's pretty solid for an under $100 investment (Fifine USB mic with an arm + pop filter). As always, Stream Scheme hits the mark with no frills and straight to the point. Thank you!

Mic positioning can affect a lot more than people realize. I recently dealt with some issues with sibilance, after following Eljay's mic recommendation of the Samson Q2U. It basically sounded like I had a speech impediment when I pronounced anything with an S or SH sound. I was able to fix this by positioning my mic a little off-axis, pointing it at my neck instead of my mouth. Audio engineers often say problems are best fixed at the source, before moving to things like software solutions. Basically, try making small changes to the position of your mic before going down huge rabbit holes for other solutions. Fixing it might be way easier than you think.

No BS you are a great teacher. Ive been working with audio for over 10 years. Ive started video this year and ive watched a lot of tutorials. Most people dont understand the tools they are using. I can usually tell when they try to explain audio filters. You explained a noise gate better than anyone else ive come across. You have no idea how many times ive gotten the wrong advice. Lol its sad. Even though I have been doing it for a long time. There is always something to learn.
Especially now with all this new technology. If you read this can anybody help me out? I dont know why im having an issue with my audio when i RECORD, using OBS. i havnt really tried streaming yet bc im waiting on the cable company to come and fix the wires. Im only getting like 15 upload and 280 paying for 1gbs.
I have been shooting a podcast for about a year now but the traditional way, leaving us with a lot of work in post. I wanted to free up time to make and edit more content. So i started using OBS as production suite lol. I have a rodecaster pro and stream deck to change scenes. I use 2 Iphone 14 pros. Lol we have had some camera issues. So we are saving up for cameras. The whole goal is to STREAMLINE you know? So while im recording it sounds great but thats bc im getting the audio straight from the source, not the stereo mix going through the computer unless i raise the Usb fader on the rodecaster but even then It sounds fine. I have mix minus on. I have all my channels set to 320 bit rate I record the multitrack on the rodecaster as well as OBS. Thank god I did bc when I listened back the first time I tried. It sounded like I had a STRONG gate or something going on with it, and the overall level was VERY low. I dont have any filters set on OBS. I make sure that everything else is muted and hid in the audio mixer except the rodecaster I can see the levels bouncing fine. So I always have to take the audio from my rodecaster and put it in premiere and synch it up. Just an extra step and I know theres something wrong. SORRY for the long comment but I cant find an answer for any of this anywhere! 😅 I have done 4 episodes in obs and ive tried different settings every time based on ANOTHER youtube tutorial and that dosent work! Lol I have a M2 MacBook. I tried the H.26 encoder but I still have some stability. On other tutorials it says that there should be an option for the Apple blanl blanl HEVC encoder but mine just says HEVC thats it….? Ive been told put it in CBR 18, 20,000 if ur recording. I tried 18,000 I tried the CFR of somethibg and then said 16/18 is a good number. Nope…..Video I good dont get me weong but I notice little stutters and it bothers me. Lol besides that im an audio engineer and cant figure this shit out lol if its just bc of that default setting, ill feel like an idiot. I don’t understand thats reason for being.. we have a scene with a selected audio source. Why do I have to go to inputs. If I already selected my source from my scene. I can understand for monitoring but it affects the output? Sorry again and thank you if you were kind enough to read this and respond!

Thriwing out the Gain here was definitely a big help. Then I setted everything up similar to you and got pretty close to your second audio. However it not sounding it exactly like this is more to how I move around it. Definitely a big improvement.
Do you have any tips how I can speak clearer into my mic or does it come from experience?
Also I put noice suprresion before noice gate, because it suddenly split my voice into chunks the other way around. Just something you might interested in hearing

Now, having seen a TON of 'how to make your mic sound good' tutorials because of having a hyper x, I have to say this is one of the best. Purely because you explain what and how everything works. I've got 3 different mics (that happen to look like that microphone but are gold and black, but are XLR) that I bought for $35 (and I got a stand that looks like that stand and a usb sound card with no fcdfking specs with that that I haven't tested yet and a bunch of cables). The wonderful thing is, when I bought the 2nd mic that looks like, it wasn't quite the same as the 1st one (and the manual of both shows a different microphone, yay). I'm a cheap bastard. So I also got two other $5 mic stands and use a sort of putty to stabilize them. Then I've got those behringer ECM 800s (those pencil looking things) and some $15 (for a pair) dynamic mics and some other mics. As well as a dual XLR/AUX $45 24bit 192khz audio interface (South African). Super hardcore gear.
Also, connect your things (PC, speakers and such) to the same (decent) plugs (otherwise you could get ground loop issues, 50/60hz buzz, etc), perhaps consider ground loop isolators, surge protectors, etc. Also, the settings in windows (if you use windows) are often at 16bit 44.1khz by default. I would recommend a 32bit (or better) DAC/ADC and higher frequency (some of those DAC/ADCs are like $10-15, though there are caveats, depending), as an analogy it's much like the resolution and framerate in a game/video 16bit only represents 65536 possible values, 32bit 4 billion...so it might require some serious processing, but it's good for playback/monitoring. Personally I kinda like the $15 32bit 384khz DAC I got for playback and such (it actually gets hot so I dunno if it's got a toaster chipset in it, but an additional usb connector (since it's usb-c and my sort of 15 year old pc and 1.1ghz laptop don't have usb-c ports) helps to function as a heatsink). But there are better ones. I also currently use two connected ground loop isolators, a surge protector, 2 surge protected multiplugs to help regulate voltage and such, and some people were complaining my sound is too loud, ground loop isolators lower the volume quite a bit).
With the behringers, I noticed that the case it's shipped in is actually a really good sound shield in case you want to make it less omnidirectional.
I also have a 29 channel (potentially, since I haven't set up my new 3ft tall $50 10 channel speakers which I will be turning sideways yet that have wireless charging and stuff?) speaker setup (some of the speakers are like 30 years old), $15 KZ crystal special edition IEMs, Alesis SRP 100s (that were $25), Prodipe BR3000s that were around $30-35, and Powerworks HPW3000s (South African upgrades of the Prodipes, and they look basically identical other than colour, but aren't) that were $30. So yeah, huge expenses.
And have a good day. (There are a lot of other things I could say, but I'm not really in the mood to rant right now, though the most significant inexpensive/functional upgrade I'd get is a South African amp/mixer unit that's around $150, and that there are numerous inexpensive simple means to mod/improve gear). Apparently also, I figure a Razer Huntsman v3 might kick the shit out of Korg/Yamaha/Roland things. Since it's positional sensing (0th derivative vs typical 2nd derivative, meaning you can derive acceleration and velocity, etc from it) as well as having seemingly 32bit full analog precision, 100+ keys and full polyphony, and generally probably more utilitarian (though software support might be an issue unless you code custom things(. But I've not had the opportunity to test that yet. Seems like it'd be nice for a compact setup though. I'm not one of those Eurocrack sort of guys.

I'm surprised there was no mention of NVIDIA Broadcast. It is shockingly helpful in removing background noise alongside OBS noise suppression. Also a plus that it has background removal for your camera too. Only works with RTX 2060 or higher though :/

    • @StreamScheme
