  • Our heritage railways have so far been able to run as they did in the old days with slam door stock which has droplight windows in the doors and opening windows in the coaches. In the 1980's after several incidents British Railways fitted bars across the widows on some stock using routes with limited clearance, another problem faced was the growing numbers of enthusiasts savouring the last years of loco hauled trains leaning out of windows many waving their outstretched arms. These practices have now drawn the attention of the ORR to our heritage railways who are monitoring them with a view to making them safer. Unfortunately it will also put people off going to gala events if like on our main lines we loose our ability to open wide a window by our seat or lower a door window. The East Lancs Railway could be the first to discourage people from leaning out of windows but we should all take heed of the reason why they are doing this. Sadly I heard one person was so outraged they had to be ejected from the railway and two others I met said they would never go to the railway again. If they think the only railway they cannot do this is the ELR they are wrong if the ORR bring in new regulations it will be on all our heritage railways. We all need to help keep our trains as they are today by not putting ourselves or anyone else in danger. Having said that the gala was still a great event and although unable to get some of the kind of on board video I have in the past taken from vestibule doors. I rather miss that than have more restrictions put on taking video from trains.

That Hymek sounded wonderful and i was there too -in fact im on your video, but yes it spoiled it for me not being able to stick my head out a little and enjoy the traction -ive been doing it for 45 years!

I just posted a reply to a comment on another video saying how disappointing the ELR is now with drivers not opening up and going at walking pace. Well he was obviously either not at the gala or not on the trains I was on. I said how impressive the acceleration of the hymek was and the sound was wonderful yes. I did not take a lot of video on my first train but asked the guard what was acceptable now. He said OK to stand in vestibules looking out but no leaning out, definitely no head and shoulders out and no arms. I decided to take all video from the toplights at my seat. I have done that before but also like you have enjoyed leaning out of a door window to see and hear the locos working. As you see on the video some did lean out and on the 56 from Heywood the first door has a huge mic on a pole above the roof. OK Not really acceptable but also not really stupid people. There is another video on here which shows the very reason the ORR are watching what is going on on our heritage lines. Youths leaning well out some with cans of beer and trees brushing past them in one shot. arm waving and shouting. I fear with behaviour like that we are soon going to loose our freedom to fully open windows to look out and door windows will have bars fitted. It puzzles me why they were allowed to do that because my first train was delayed due to someone having to be escorted away by police after having a confrontation with staff who told him not to lean out. I will really miss that myself as like you it is something I have done for years and taken care not to do it in places I have no clear view ahead. A long reply. As long as our day was not totally spoiled and we keep on supporting our heritage lines.

Yes compared to the Severn Valley where they get up to proper lines speeds and giving them a bit of power even from starting off -and yes windows no problem! The Hydraulic weekend was fantastic! @@cedarcam

@@octopus680 I just watched the SVR Hydraulic weekend Looked great and for someone like me who never got haulage from one a really good opportunity to fill the gap. SVR is too far to travel for a day for me so yet to get haulage from a Western which I hope to do one day. It will only be a matter of time before every railway has to request no window hanging or the ORR demand bars fitted so best making the most of that while you can, it is all due to www.orr.gov.uk/search-news/regulator-publishes-new-rogs-guidance-minor-and-heritage-railways

Very good video mate. It's great to 40012 working again. It has been at Butterley for years and hardly turned a wheel.

Thank you Denis 40012 was good to see I remember it being in a sorry state and wondered if it would ever run again. I could not resist haulage off D345 but it would of been very late getting home if I had done the full line The departure from Summerseat was brilliant so I was really pleased I got off there. Overall a great gala and hoping to go to the DMU one in November again

Thank you Phil I met a couple of people who said they will never go here again, what some people do not realise is it is not only the ELR the ORR are monitoring it is all our heritage railways, it is just it seems the ELR are the first to try and discourage window hanging. The main concern that has drawn the ORR's attention is at diesel galas where people hang well out of windows waving arms about and as this was a diesel gala the staff were keen to discourage that. What puzzles me is there is another video on here showing a perfect example of what the ORR are looking at and the staff do not take any action to stop it, whilst on my first train a very clear announcement was made no head and shoulders or arm waving out of windows is allowed. I asked the guard and he said it was OK to stand at a window to look out but no leaning out. As you see on the video some did have heads out and on the 56 a microphone on a long pole being used which was not really acceptable but people were not being really stupid. All my video was taken from wide open top light windows and although none of my preferred vestibule window views looking along to the locomotive side on I was reasonably happy and it did not really spoil my day out. I just hope we do not end up with windows that will not open more than the few inches to the prevent draughts position and bars across the windows but fear that will happen because of the few who spoil it for the majority.

@@cedarcam yes, I know it's not just the ELR. Sadly, like anything else, it's the few idiots that hang /wave right out of the window that will end up spoiling it for everyone. Like me, you probably only put your camera and head slightly out of the door window and are always on the lookout for any possible danger..
It will be very sad if we are all caged in.

@@philclarke3203 Yes Phil I only lean out in places I could get a clear view and mostly only held my camera out. I have always taken care like yourself. The behaviour I saw on BR trackside was alarming when a loco hauled passed and now those older people from those days who should know better and some younger ones are going to ruin our hobby.

Talking of NYMR over on your video they are now restricting door drop windows to 100mm opening Our days of looking out of windows are numbered :(

Not heard about that Colin, but not at all surprised. Yes are window days are numbered. Not just this, but any other things in life are being banned, all because common sense , apparently, doesn't exist anymore?
