An excellent presentation, and Rob touches on the main reason nothing changes when he says how he has been knocking on doors for years, and that is for many of the sports employees their is a lack of incentive for them to change or fund anything new.

Well said Rob..soft track's better for the greyhounds long jeopardy and well being..change lure position longer straight b4 1st corner etc..Australia is the benchmark for racing..I agree we need to make afew changes beneficial for the animal..is there anyway we can vote..to make these changes a rule..

Wow, great talk! I'm in the US and I think it's about time to get another retired racer for a pet. I used to volunteer for an adoption organization, and I think you're right about the overall 'personality' of the retired dogs--and even those who didn't race; they're wonderful dogs with so few exceptions. I hope your insights can help these wonderful dogs have wonderful second careers and success in life.

As a frisbee and agility dog trainer and a lover of greyhounds, this is an excellent presentation. I don't know much about greyhounds although my grandfather had Greyhounds in Orange. He lost a dog a Cowra many years ago that was hit by by a gate that didn't lock up, his back was broken.

Ive havnt wached whole yet, but lots sweeping generalizations. Some are correct though. Dogs should not be left in runs until twelve months old. They need to be started earlier, but some trainers believe this not in there best interest, they have not finished developing. Most of the problems come back to breeding and handling. Breeding to very fast dogs , instead of strong dogs(iron dogs) who show consistancy and no injurys over time, as was the case a few years back, they were having 250 starts now they struggle to make 50. This is the second half of the problem, the first is handling. If they are started early when pups they dont need "breaking in". (Except maybe box work)But to do this and the different lure coursing you have to fix breeding, or there will be too many injurys. In my opinion, the SPORT (as it used to be known, now called an industry) was saved by Paul Wheeler and people who imported bloodline from USA, IRE ect, as the breed had become weakened in Australia by incorrect breeding, as mr Brittan says, fashion industry. My opinion, people breeding to speed, and inbreeding, instead of strength(consistant strong iron dogs perhaps with less pace)If the breeding is fixed, and the handling is fixed, there is next to ZERO non chasers, spooks, and there is less to none issues in regarding welfare, or animal cruelty ect. There needs to be a return to coursing, (lure not plumpton)old fashioned breeding,

R.B The Only dogs you want are guaranteed to win or place at high level racing at 50% of the prize money going to you.
The Owner pays all fees and gets only 50% of prize money -------- Trainer Does Sweet F A and gets the other 50% with no cost.
Yeah I"m 1 pissed off owner watching the crap that is spun about greyhounds in general

      Trainer does SFA?
If they do sweet FA train it yaself ya sook or just get out of Greyhounds.
And if you had a clue you'd know that once a dog starts earning X amount of prize money then all fees are waived and it costs the owner nothing.

"Does sweet F A"...haha you idiot. Training is a 7 days a week job. They only get time off when they have no dogs in the kennel or can have someone baby sit them for a day.

Harder to train the owner than the dog
