    Excellent lesson for me, I just bought a Kala Rumbler- FS yesterday and learned to play this last night. It was about the only thing I could play on the piano growing up but I could not figure out how to play it on Guitar or uke, but now I can play it on UBass.
    Thankyou and keep up the good work:)

    Excellent lesson ( as always !). Dumb question . I understand it’s a I IV V progression but you added the E so there are 4 notes . What am i missing ?

    • @stephencoxbass
      @stephencoxbass  Před rokem +1

      Hi Rich, so basically the pattern outlines one of the chords. So if we are playing in the key of G, our pattern outlines the first chord ( I ) using the arpeggio notes (notes GBD), but we can add a note as part of a pattern. The E technically acts as though we are outlining a G6 chord...but it's really just a common Blues pattern. Another way to look at it is that you can use notes from the pentatonic scale and it still sounds nice over the I chord. E is in the G major pentatonic Scale ( G A B D E g ).
      I hope that helps a bit. Let me know if you have any more questions about any of the above. Thanks for watching!

    Thank you for this, my question is do you need to have an amp to play a bass ukulele?

    • @stephencoxbass
      @stephencoxbass  Před 4 lety

      You can play without one, but to be heard when playing with others, you will definitely want to have one. Also, the metal strings are louder than the polyurethane. Thanks for watching!

    I play a U-Bass with a ukulele group and most of the songs are in C. What advice can you give about starting patterns for supporting these songs. We do Folsom Prison Blues, Rock Around the Clock, Hotel Yorba and Delilah. I am not very experienced with the U-Bass

    • @stephencoxbass
      @stephencoxbass  Před 5 lety

      The first two are pretty close to 12 bar blues songs, and there's a video on the beginner playlist that walks through a similar pattern as Folsom: czcams.com/video/rgP5MrILotc/video.html

    • @stephencoxbass
      @stephencoxbass  Před 5 lety

      For the other songs, try looking up bass guitar tutorials for each...the frets and strings will be the same on the U-Bass.

  • @1BIGpineapple
    @1BIGpineapple Před 5 lety +2

    I see why now. To be able to play in other keys, like A, using the pattern makes playing them easier..

    • @stephencoxbass
      @stephencoxbass  Před 5 lety +1

      Precisely! I like to give movable patterns. Another reason to avoid open strings sometimes is to get a more consistent tone and volume...open strings tend to stand out a bit.

  • @Crisman111

    Is there a reason to use 5th fret rather than the next string open for the G Scale? U BASS !

    • @junktwomail
      @junktwomail Před 5 lety +5

      Yes, three actually. 1) Knowing how to play without open strings allows you to keep the pattern described anywhere on the neck 2) To eliminate the difference in tone (open string vs fretted) and 3) its easier to control the sustain on a fretted string.

      @stephencoxbass  Před 3 lety

      @@jeremyalm9006 It may be a loose part on the pickup or battery compartment. Do you have the polyurethane strings or the metal strings?

    • @jeremyalm9006
      @jeremyalm9006 Před 3 lety

      @@stephencoxbass Sorry, just saw this. I have the poly strings. I think it a combination of a high fret wire and poor technique, because (1.) it happens more on the third fret than elsewhere, and (2.) I have adjusted how I play w/ my RH and it's somewhat better now.

    • @stephencoxbass
      @stephencoxbass  Před 3 lety +1

      @@jeremyalm9006 If it happens more on the 3rd fret after improving your technique, it could still be the instrument. I have a slight buzz on my Wanderer model on the 1st fret of the A string. If I play SUPER lightly it won't buzz, but I was able to do a truss rod adjustment to get rid of it. However, that adjustment caused a buzz on the 14th fret of the A and D string. I opted to keep it that way since I use the 1st fret of the A string much more often.
