Amy Yeung Puts the Breaks on Fast Fashion!
Liberating herself from the stigma of ageism, Amy is 55 years young, good with her mane of salt and pepper hair and on the brink of breaking free. Stepping into the world of reimagined vintage and upcycled textiles from all over the world that is her company Orende Tribe, is like a deep dive into a bygone era of one-of-a-kind clothing and accessories that scream of an ancient beauty lost in a world of mass-produced disposable fashion. Amy is on cloud nine in her status as ex-corporate creative director for fast fashion brands, instead using her precious time to decolonize herself, give back and reconnect to her roots as a Native American that were once lost when she was adopted as a baby to parents who lived in a small rural town in Indiana.
For Amy’s full life and style story, listen to her episode of our podcast, What’s Underneath, on iTunes (bit.ly/WUStyleA), Spotify (spoti.fi/2l894E9) or Stitcher (bit.ly/2HNthb1).
And if you know anyone who would be empowered by Amy’s story, please share the links to her episode with them and be a part of spreading the message that true style is the result of radical self-acceptance.

Kente cloth is West African, indigenous to Ghana, the Fanti and Ashanti and other tribes weave this traditional cloth and the colours are particular to certain klans and chiefdoms.

Was about to comment the same. Kente is a distinct Ghanaian textile. I really enjoyed her feature but that was an incorrect statement on her part. Perhaps it was a brain fog moment

There is little education about ethnic clothing from the African continent. There are so many different nations, tribes and kingdoms and within them infinite cloths, clothes and what they symbolise. Until we accept the humanity of these peoples and give appropriate attention to learning their different culture, we will continue to lump Africans and African products in one amorphous primitive mass from which we steal and appropriate with impunity.

I have a friend in her 70s who is a textile artist who goes to Indonesia each year and I guess she too could be accused of appropriating stuff. The other side is she pays for everything, she fostered Indonesian kids, the villages she's gone for years give her a grand welcome and she supported those communities through bad times e.g. after the Bali bombings, and they let her sketch and them and like the lino prints and other art works she makes that have Indonesian themes. Actual contact and treating each other as equals makes all the difference.

@ 5:42 We know that every human being on earth shares the same mitochondrial DNA that traces all the way back to the same group of women in Great Grandmother Africa. As human being migrated out of Africa and spread out over the earth settling in colder climates where they suddenly had to wear clothing to keep warm and therefore could not absorb nutrients from the sun a sudden epigenetic mutation took place causing less melanin which made it possible to get nutrient with less skin exposed the same genes responsible for melanin affected eye color and hair texture ...race is merely a series of a long line of genetic mutations...we are all cousins! Cultures and languages developed when human beings went in all directions of the earth as well as the textiles that developed along with cloth making and decorative motifs were handed down ...When Amy Yeung mixes textiles from different cultures she is honoring humanity and the creative human spirit!
