  • A hike on the Herriot Way in the Yorkshire Dales with Simon AKA walking_daze.
Day 2 of 4 was a 12-mile high-level route following the Pennine Way over Great Shunner Fell.
Having spent the night camping at Hawes Youth Hostel and having had a fab breakfast it was time to make the steady climb up to the top of Great Shunner Fell, 2350ft.
It was humid in the dales and breezy on the tops which saw many people including Simon get a little well-cooked that day. The shelter on the top of Great Shunner Fell was a welcome break from the strong breeze.
Whilst it does offer a magnificent panorama of the landscape it's a proper hump of a hill rather than dramatic. However, once you begin to descend towards Swaledale and Keld all that begins to change.
Calling in at the Keld Lodge for a couple of cold ones was extremely welcome and slowly but surely more and more hikers began to appear seeking the same oasis.
We camped at Rukin's Campsite and it was rammed. However, the cafe was pretty quiet and the garden was sheltered and sunny so it would have been rude not to take advantage of the comfy chairs and try some of the local beers that can be purchased there. (By the way, the cakes are amazing).
My only warning to anyone visiting Keld is "Beware the Midges!" Sadly Swaledale is a midge breeding ground and they swarm a lot in the summer months.
    Filmed on a Pixel 7 & DJI Mini 3.

    Music from Epidemic Sounds.
