  • This is a basic 101 video for those interested in watches and watch collecting. In this video we will go over an introduction to watches to help you begin your journey understanding the complicated world of horology and watch collecting. We will cover the following
    - basic parts of a watch
    - mechanical watches versus Quartz watches
    - the many kinds of watch functions which can be found in watches such as automatic, diving, time, day, date, day and night cycle, GMT, moon phase, chronograph, alarm, driving, world time, tourbillon, and Striking
    - men’s versus ladies watches
    - contemporary versus vintage, versus antique watches
    - watch patina and aging, as well as watch lume
This is not a complete guide to all things watches, it is designed as a beginner’s level introduction to help explain some very basic concepts in simple detail, and to begin exposing new collectors to categories, terms and functions available in watches. We do NOT touch upon watch brands in this video. Keep an eye out for future videos expanding on the world of horology.

One thing you forgot to mention is how it becomes an addiction/obsession. I have been collecting watches for a couple of years now and both me and my partner have taken a liking to them in several ways, such as, the eye catching dials the movements (mechanical, quartz and solar) the purpose of them, the metal they are made out of the occasion (beater, every day and formal) and what outfits they go with (more my other halfs thing). Although I pretty well knew already what you were saying I thought you did a really good job explaining the topic. Keep it up. Just doing a quick count 22 plus I am picking one up on Monday and the other half has one on order, plus having spent around $30,000 as well.

Thank you for the support and encouragement! Im glad you enjoyed the video. I’m working on turning this into a mini series of videos. Each video going over a different part of watch collecting at a basic beginners level. It’s tough cutting back and deciding what info to include and to cut. When I started collecting 6 years ago so many videos just assumed you already knew the basics, which felt frustrating to me. So I want to create a way for anyone to learn about watches, no matter how much or little they already know. I’m working on the next video which will go over a beginners guide to watch brands. After that I will begin tackling what watches to consider when you are starting a collection. I appreciate your continued support of the channel!

Great video. I believe the Seiko with integrated bracelet needs a battery change, that's why the seconds hand moves like that.

Great observation. That Seiko is actually a kinetic, so it charges its battery with a rotor inside. It doesn’t have a normal battery that you can easily replace. It’s running like that because it’s low on charge and needs to be worn for a bit so the rotor can spin and charge up the battery. The solar watches do the same when they’re low on charge, the seconds hand ticks only every few seconds to save on energy.

@@thevintagereserve9548 Right, it's a kinetic but I thought it could be a battery (capacitor) replacement related issue anyway. Very nice collection you have, that German diver is beautiful.

Thank you for watching, I remember when I got into watches no one ever really sat down and explained the basics. So I wanted to have something that went over the fundamentals.

Not al watches have hands, some have one hand and is called a "einzeiger".

There are also Mechanical jump hours which use windows to tell the time instead of hands. It’s meant to just be a basic beginners guide. If I included everything it would have been an 8 hour video. But perhaps I’ll make a part 2 going over even more complications!

@@thevintagereserve9548 I was just providing extra information, a jump-hour watch works the same as a normal watch only the hands are replaced with disks and show the time in windows like a day-date mechanisme does.
You cant cover everything in a beginner's guide but you did good.. i had never seen a driving-watch before so that was nice.
