- I know I know it’s Jane Birkin I made a mistake, OMG stop crucifying me!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
So this was a Project, this Hermès Birkin bag was left in storage for many years without climate control. Interior was completely deteriorated, mildew and musty smell throughout the bag. We disassembled the entire bag and cleaned, cleaned and conditioned it over and over before I was happy with it. Remade the interior with lamb skin and reinforced the main body to give it structural support. I did the best I could with the video and I hope you like it. - Jak na to + styl
Even Hermes won’t repair a bag that far gone. Great job!
They will.
@@walideg5304 Hermes doesn’t repair the inside of bags
they absolutely will
@@peterhgalloway thats funny i read an article a woman sent a bag to hermes spa, they did not touch the inside of the bag and it needed repairs.

I wish you had a young enthusiastic apprentice to teach all that skill to carry on that super quality of work you have going on there. You are phenomenal!
2nd that👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Really masterful work & person @Steve
That could be you 😀
I would literally move from Florida to Virginia to become Steve's apprentice. I love this craft so much!!
Great work, but it seems that it’s not an original Birkin, The feet of real one is not screwed, it’s hammered. Maybe I’m wrong..
I tried calling the shop asking to be an apprentice and was told he doesn't teach 😥 it's such a shame! He's one of the best, would have loved to learn from him.
That color is called "blue jeans denim blue" and is one of the most popular Birkin bag colors. I'm amazed by this skilled man! He could get a job at Hermès on the spot.
How anyone could spend that kind of money on a Birkin bag and not keep it in a climate controlled storage is sickening! Your restoration job is perfection, Steve.
Easy, the people who put it away didn’t care for the monetary value. There could have been a divorce, or an elopement, that the owner didn’t find it worth going back for. The original owner could have past away, and all their stuff eventually moved out before being given away. A lot of people don’t know the worth of things and just move it out of the way for ages before eventually getting rid of it.
@@evelyn_r I saw a video of a couple who found a pristine, antique Louis Vuitton steamer trunk at a garage sale being held by an elderly lady who didn't know what it was. They were giddy they snagged it for $200. I wouldn't have been able to sleep at night knowing she needed the thousands it could have obtained at auction to live on.
Who in their right mind would spend that kind of money on this few slabs of leather and cardboard? This is the handbag version of the emperor has no clothes........
@@raffinee_3763 Agreed. I buy the super fakes/dupes without the logo. That bag is a workhorse, but not a $15,000 workhorse.
Sometimes people don't know the real value of inherited items that's why some of these luxury bags have been found at thrift shops
Hèrmes bags are insanely expensive because you get what you pay for - a piece that will last a lifetime (as long as it is taken care of.) From the selection of the hides, processing et al, to the workmanship, Hèrmes is second to none. The intricacies start with the harvesting the leather to the last stitch on the bag. It takes 10 years of apprenticeship before a craftsman/craftswomen is allowed to make an Hèrmes handbag on their own. Yes, they can be seen as a status symbol, but not all Hèrmes bags are easily recognizable. Thus, they can go through life incognito. I have several Hèrmes bags (the incognito type) purchased on the secondary market that are 30+ years old. They look amazing!!
What I absolutely LOVE about these types of videos is how they "pull back the curtain" on how these iconic, overpriced designer bags are actually made. And while the materials may be of a better caliber than most bags, at the end of the day, they're still glued in places, include some kind of cardboard-like material to give it structure, and may even have some hidden imperfections as you pointed out with the leather on this bag. Also, even a bag as expensive as this cannot withstand abuse and poor care! Leather is leather and just because you pay a TON for something, doesn't mean it can withstand any kind of treatment.
Well done! I hope this customer pays you LOTS of money and that you get well compensated by CZcams for the views and likes on this video!
I agree that prices are ridicules but people are on waiting list to get them, so why not charge them.
This is not original Hermes bag. Feet, stabilizing material, machine stitching are all wrong.
I hate how they use carboard for the inside. We have that kind of structure in cheap shoes and bags.
I'm 70yrs old and I'm going to start a new career as a cobbler 😂. Your an inspiration to us all with your skills and craftsmanship, especially the knife work. Such patience and technique. IMO this is one of your best videos Steve, keep em coming ❤
Great video! I agree with your point about buying fakes for personal safety reason, especially when travelling. Getting mugged on holiday is traumatic enough ,getting mugged with a genuine bag is even worse. It makes sense to me to travel with a fake bag and not carry anything of value that you will miss. Also if you get your bag damaged with dirt, stain, accidents, whatever it is , it won't matter if it's a fake. I recommend *condupcom* for you, it will save you a lot of trouble, but I'm glad you're there.
Incredible work!! I agree the price is too high for a bag, but contrary to others brands Hermès have literally many little towns to sustain in France. They have multiple farms where the cows are treated with the utmost care, they have fields to ensure their pasture is top notch to obtain the best leather quality. And they have created schools and diplomas to train people to their high standard. Everything you see in metal in the bag is 24 karat gold-plated . So compared to others brands their spending is much higher, I think it’s important to keep that in mind. Especially if we compare to Chanel…
Or Palladium. 😊
It should be gold for that price
@@3litangelsAgreed lol
@osiria75 thank You for sharing. Sometimes people don’t understand what goes into certain craftsmanship. Hermes is a dying breed where they ACTUALLY STILL PRODUCE many of their own products BY HAND and haven’t “OUTSOURCED “ it to factories on the other side of the world like Chanel/LV has. Very seldom do you hear about QUALITY issues with Hermes like you do with Chanel/LV and the difference is that Hermes hasn’t gone crazy with the constant price increases(although their prices are steep) like LV and Chanel who in my opinion don’t deserve the current price tags because the QUALITY and craftsmanship isn’t there in their products anymore. They are now mass produced which is why they are experiencing the quality control and super fake problems. These other topics are not meant for this post and I’m not defending the brand. Just speaking to certain facts.
Also LV isn't even leather only the handles and trim so your paying for canvas
From Wikipedia: In 1983, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to English singer/actress Jane Mallory Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. Birkin had just placed her straw basket in the overhead compartment of her seat, but the contents fell to the floor, leaving her to scramble to replace the contents. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked. In 1984, he created a black supple leather bag for her: the Birkin bag, based on a 1982 design.
Wealthy people are often more careful with their money than middle class people. It's how they got that way, and they're obsessed with wealth preservation. The money saved can be invested in education, health, or other personal growth. I would like to share a treasure *condupcom* that I recently discovered. The good things inside are not only unique in design, but also very cost-effective. I believe you will also like it.

Wouldn’t the world be a much prettier place if everything were made by the hands of such talented men and women as he. A true artist. ❤
Once you opened up the inside and the lining and the yellow dust started spilling out…I automatically started choking.
Craftsmen like yourself make my brain happy. Exceptional work, well done. Keep doing you ❤️❤️❤️
Would love to have seen the customer’s reaction to the amazing restoration of this very expensive bag!
I can see why it was $5,000 to repair. You are truly a craftsman. Wonderful job. Thank you for sharing. 👍🏻
I loved this purse, the color is beautiful. You are completely right. Your customer is paying for the history of the company. Beautiful bag ❤
My flabber has never been so gasted with this bag Steveo
What a job $5k was a bargain for the customer I agree the original prices are bonkers However it’s peanuts for the money folk Brilliant job again Always an interesting video from you Thanks again
👍👍💕🕊️
Craftsmen like you are so rare these days. Amazing job!
Strangely theraputic watching you restore this bag, apart from the hand stitching which looked like an absolute chore, great job as always Steve.
Your patience and skill to bring that bag back to life is beyond believe Steve. Bravo 👏🏼! Keep the videos coming!
i trusted Steve he did fixed my LV sling bag thanx much Steve❤
I have no idea why this is so soothing. I do not do any of this type of work. But, I watch all the time.
Great job in restoring this bag! ... enjoyed watching you tackle this job; looked like new! Beautiful!!!
Saddle stitching and hand skiving are my two favorite parts of leatherwork. It would be pretty tough to be competitive in stitching by hand. You do really beautiful work, Steve.
I agree. I only do hand stitching. Don't have a walking foot machine. Only a hobbyist leather crafter. My stitching pony just gathers dust since I learned the Leap Frog method of stitching. I can do it anywhere, not tied to a bench or clamp. Corter Leather taught me how to do it. I think his method is faster and more precise than using a pony. Hand skiving is still my bane. I try to hone my knife before every session. I cannot seem to get the angle correct on my leather strop.
Love stitching. hate skiving
@@ObelixCMM Almost anyone can do saddle stitching. Skiving takes a lot of time to truly master. It is what separates the boys from the men....so to speak.
This is a fantastic job. Congratulations! I never thought this Birkin would be so beautiful again.
Steve - you are such an artisan. Your workmanship is unbelievable.
Deconstructing this handbag just shows that all people are paying for is the brand name. Beautiful work as usual. Love the colour of the lining leather
If it’s $5000 for a restoration then $10K isn’t bad for the bag.
Birkins are also all hand saddle stitched and hand assembled. They take a ton of time to make. In addition to the name and heritage, that's what you're paying for.
@@dmdunn that is so true .. like a rolls Royce, Lambo, or any other high end good whatever it is. and most important the name.. its called a status symbol.
Most folks leave it unbuckled, and the flap open, I watch all of tanners videos it helps me really understand I am paying for a name. Your videos made me understand its labor I am paying for when I think that's an easy fix, I see how much work that simple job is.
The variety of textures in the *luxdups* pack is impressive. From smooth leather to textured suede, there's something for everyone.
The color of that bag is stunning. What a job! You completely restored this bag to look like new! Quality work!
Watching a master craftsman like you is mesmerising. 🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍
2009?!?! My god, that is a travesty! Wonderful restoration as always.....Probably my favorite of all you've done! 🎉
This is absolutely amazing. What an incredible repair.
The only way i was able to get odors out of bags was to use an ozone generator. Put the bag in a closed off room (take plants, anything "live" out), seal off the bottom of the door. It might take 2-3 times but it works. Obviously, this bag required a complete dismantling and deep cleaning and is the exception!!! Great work!
Another one! My wife actually watched this episode with me! She loved it!! Great job Steve.
Jane Birkin. An English singer and actress very popular in France.
Beautiful work. Bravo
I love watching people with amazing skills bringing things back to life with knowledge care and love. Truly enjoyable. Thanks for making this video and letting us peek at your master workmanship
The hands of a man who's made quality goods for years
Hey Steve. Amazing video!!! The completed project turned out incredible!
The company I work for cleans/repairs antique oriental rugs which is an entirely different line of work. But when you were talking about the struggle with the mildew smell, I figured I share what we do. Maybe its something that can help with similar projects down the road.
When we get a rug thats been neglected to this state, we've found that some smells (cigarette and mold/mildew especially) are next to impossible to remove entirely from things like wool and leather because they tend to absorb scents.
Here's the trick we use. After the initial cleaning to get rid of the physical dirt and debris, we then stick it in a sealed area with an ozone machine over night. The next morning we air the area out (as concentrated ozone is toxic) and wash the rug again. In the 15 years I've been doing it, the amount of rugs this did not resolve the odor issue on I can count on one hand.
Hope you or anyone else that reads this finds it helpful.
Thank you, that is helpful
That little pair of pliers with the leather jaws is a brilliant little mod. I usually have plastic jaws on my fine pliers, but leather will grip much better. On the bucket list of future modifications, for sure. Thanks Steve!
Wow! Great job!
I dont think this is a genuine hermes birkin, the feet of the bag are always hammerd in place and cant be screwed off.
show a real 1 on your channel and share with the whole world your extensive knowledge
@@daddysails8926 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Steve, I noticed when restoring the bag the feet that were on the bag were screw-on studs. I believe a real authentic Birkin uses feet rivets. It would make me question whether the bag is genuine.
It's 100% a replica
@@ruben-wb7bt I know nothing about designer bags but I’m avid sneaker and shoe collector so I do understand how expensive these items can be. Man, a $5k restoration on a fake that’s a hard pill to swallow. It’s certainly not Steve’s fault and the customer should have sought out an experts opinion.
Hi, yeah it's an expensive repair but it's a Fake i Can tell you it's been 3 years i work at Hermes and everything is off from the général shape to how metals parts are fixed. No stiffener like that on the real ones just plain leather
@@ruben-wb7bt Oh I believed you. I was just saying to pay that much for a restoration on a fake item sucks.
Yes i think bedo's himself thought it was a real
I love how you show the world what these expensive brands do. You showed a complete breakdown of what these are made of. Make yo money babe I ain’t mad at you! 🫡 people don’t hate player; hate the game. The internals of this bag had completely disintegrated 😂. I would go get a custom crazy horse leather or 8oz nubuck bag made by a real craftsman for about $600 before I pay thousands for a mildewed compressed paper coated bag. Great business transaction 🫡. You are a very talented and smart man.
I haven’t clicked a video as fast.
Me too!!
You’re a genius. Would pay you to teach me this skill, this art. The videos are one thing but man.. So fascinating.
Loved your patience, talent , attention to the HERMES detail & finished product…..as an artist I appreciated your entire process through video.
The best leather master craftsman in the country. What amazing care and actually improving on the Hermes construction technique.
It’s a fake
Such a great job! I have an Hermes Kelly and this restoration project was a real treat to watch. So much care and attention put into it.
I would absolutely love to be your apprentice! I have a knack at finding name brand bags that need some restoring, maybe not at this level like here in the video but I would love to learn from a master like u! I'm so glad i found ur videos. I'm a more of an on hand learner than a visual learner but i do appreciate your videos anyhow. U have taught me a few things so far & it is greatly appreciated! Thank u so much for sharing your amazing trade with us here on CZcams:) God bless u & ur family:)
Have watch this 3 times just to go through the phases, we have to understand making one from scratch /start to finish is hard in itself let alone restoring and repairing one from the start takes a lot of time and especially planning, which i think separates each others skills and foundation on how they learned their skillset, Props to u Steve i love the outcome of this project and for sharing ur videos.
Amazing what people with money will pay for labels! At least that bag appears to've had better materials used than the LV and Gucci stuff. Love me some saddle stitch. That's mostly what I do when sewing leather. Very nice end result on something that was going away (internally) so bad. Always a pleasure seeing your handiwork, Steve. God bless you in your efforts.
That leather is BEAUTIFUL. And your work is impeccable as always.
Beautiful job as always. You are a La créme de la créme of craftsman. ❤❤
Such a beautiful repair! Who knows how the bag ended up so damaged but pleased to see that you fixed it. Congratulations!
I wonder if this was an authentic Birkin bag. I have a hard time believing that Hermes would use a stiffener that would totally crumble like that. I mean, their stuff is rediculously expensive, but it's extremely well made.
I don't believe it was authentic. The reinforcement material is suspect but the real red flag are the tabs on the back of the bag closure. Authentic Birkins use hand peened rivets not tabs.
@the5280kid I thought of that also when it came in but did some research and it seems like it was real.
It’s not authentic.
@@mysettingsmysettings2997 Those were my thoughts as well. I'd be pissed to have paid $5k for a restoration job (which I think is absurd anyways...especially when it's all machine stitched) for a fake birkin bag. But if the customer is happy, that's all that really matters.
@@mysettingsmysettings2997 it had 4 rivets along with the prongs
Climate control is so important.
A few years back my client's mother had her top-of-the-line computer sewing machine stored in an outdoor shed while her house was being remodeled. When she took it out to set it back up and use it the machine was rusted inside and full of mold. Again, climate control is so very important! Well done as always, Steve!
My cousin stored her mother's sewing machine out in a barn. It was completely rusted a few years later.
I had no idea it would cost so much for a restoration . Oh, you totally deserve every penny for the amazing results you achieve .Love your channel.
Steve, it's amazing to watch you work! Excellent job, with a remarkable outcome.
Excellent job 👏 ... you're a true craftsman!! You bought that bag back from the dead!! ☠ and gave it many more years of life!!
For a bag starting price of $10k, it was neglected. Great restoration Steve.
PS. I love to hand stitch items.
My wife’s 100 dollars bags is in better condition after 5 years of use then this one.
I'm not sure if you still read this but I know that quite a few bags come from Japan from the tsunami they had years ago. They are still selling high-end designer bags. A lot of them look great from the outside but have that awful musty odor and disintegrating inside. Your pronunciation is spot on. Also, Hermes repairs the bags. Just like Louis Vuitton and all the other designer handbags; You did a great job, but I just want to put it out there. Hermes and Louis Vuitton take the bags once they are authenticated and repair them. Customer service so to say.
I enjoyed the viewing of your craftsmanship. I don't understand the money people spend on certain things but it's their money. Thank you for taking the time to do video. I love watching you work.
I had a dark thought. Original owner wanted to be burried with the bag. Relative "retrieved" it a few years later. May explain condition and smell. 😮
Nice work!
WOW!!! What an amazing job you did with the complete restoration of this bag and giving it a second life. It's like brand new again, maybe even better.
Incredibly, at such a price for this bag, it should be of the best quality and be eternal, so that it could be left to great-grandchildren! Thanks for the video, great job! Greetings from Russia!))
Another awesome job Steve! Thanks a lot for sharing. 😊
I priced this bag, it goes for almost $20k. Used for a little over $9k. That being said, I would love to find one in the condition you started with, rebuild it and sell it.
My ex girlfriends mother doesn't have a problem shelling out the cash for one of those new. To some people $20k is just a number.
You did a great job during the rebuild, I also like how you show mistakes and how to rectify them.
Steve, it's relaxing watching you work and very informative.
Couldn’t watch this when it first released but as soon as I got home it was the first thing I did! Keep up the amazing work, Steve!
My toxic trait is thinking I can do this at home on my kitchen bench within tools at all LOL
Amazing job!!
As always!!! Beautiful work Steve!!! 🙌🏻
That shade of blue is gorgeous! Thank you for all the time and effort!
Tanner is doing an awesome job. Love his videos too. Great of you to mention him.
thanks again for another incredible job Steve.
Absolutely to die for restoration project! IF the bsg had been given to me, I would not hesitate to have The Maestro restore the bag! Hèrmes will NOT restore the interior of their bags. Steve has done an amazing job, second to none! Bravo!!
I know why this bag restoration was so expensive…..because you had to go buy a box of rubber gloves!😂😂😂 Awesome work Steve, it’s truly amazing what you’re able to pull off! (No pun intended!) I’ve never seen you intimidated by a single project that comes into the shop! As a leather craftsman myself I really admire that!🙌🏻
I think this might have benefited form an ozone treatment at the start. I’ve dealt with small amounts of mildew with a special leather antibacterial spray I bought from a bag restoration company here in the auKI know mould isn’t bacterial, it’s fungus, but for some reason it killed it and got rid of the odour.
I totally agree about paying this sort of money for a bag. I wouldn’t even if I could afford it, and I love bags! I’d be too scared to use it. I think it’s a bit of ‘emperors new clothes with Hermes. You have to buy loads of other stuff before you even get offered a bag to purchase and even then it might not be what you really want. It’s the exclusivity that people are going for imo.
I was hoping you would do a close up around the bag at the end for us Steve.
You are quite an artist! This was fascinating, and your work is beautiful! Thanks!
Best video ever! Appreciate your candor regarding the price of a Birkin. You and Tanner Leatherstein are 💯 in my book!!
What a beautiful work. For a minute i was worried you would use a machine for the stitching. Has we all know hermès bags hand stitched. Contrary to what people have said in the comments hermès does actually repars bags even one like this one.. for a cost obviously. I know that for a fact cause i had my barking fixed (it was not in that state) but i have my mother s kelly (circa 1968) and it s been completely redone by the hermès ateliers. Regarding this one i m sadly almost sure it s what they call a super fake witch meen it s a very well made fake. The feets are nt right. The handles either and specially the wax edge of the handle. The S of the brand look crocked as well. And finally let s not talk about the material use to help the bag keeps it s shape and finally hermès would NEVER use a piece of leather with a defect in it even if it s covered but the handle. it s just not in the spirit of the house. Despite that you did such an amazing work that shows again your talent.
Wow. A Birkin. Great job Steve. ❤️
Steve, brother, you are talented! You're practically a miracle worker! 👌
masterclass! Thank you for sharing Steve.
Another amazing job. You took a mess and turned it back into a masterpiece. Well done. I'm sure the customer is thrilled to have her beautiful bag back.
What a extensive project ! Great work 👍
Just one word, " Wow!" 💕
There are handbags and then there is the Birkin. They hold their value as a luxury brand. Couturier, handmade quality. Truly beautiful made. Well done!
I'm glad you said that the bag was over priced . Steve O , your right . I thought that at would have a little gold leave triming at least for the price
Apart that excellent work .
Steve you are an artist.
Always, always such a fabulous restoration! Hugz, Tree
What a terrific job, such craftsmanship! Absolutely in awe of your skills and talent 😊
I love every aspect of your videos; from the camera and audio quality to the commentary! Even my husband enjoys listening to you. Amazing restoration as always!
Is this work not common in today's era mostly because there are not many quality products being produced, and thus not much demand for restoration? I wonder how many people like you will exist in just 30-50 years. Fantastic work.
Did you hear how much this job was? I wonder how many people have that kind of dough and would rather restore than buy new.
Though I agree prices like this are just ridiculous, but that's fashion ofcourse. In this case, she had the money and it would be half the cost of a new one. Given what Bedo's usually does, it will be better than the original.
Well done Steve. Great project. 😊
Fantastic work!
Wow, how blessed whoever got it for a gift. That color is simply beautiful! And of course you did a beautiful job!
And jeez, holy smokes is that lamb skin such a great match of color. My local fabric store would certainly not have that lol. I find this sort of work sooo interesting. It would be awesome to learn from you (or anyone) with this wealth of knowledge. It has such a good combo of working with hands and math and cleaning - great for my personality!
Old Leather Smith here, beautiful work as always Steve, 2 different things between us other than I am older, I use WOOL FELT inside bags, and I HAND STITCH EVERYTHING unless the client requests otherwise. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃
Wow, Great Job Steve!
