    I am new to this hobby and bought an 18 inch Alberta...I've tried to envision what to do but I may have bitten off more than I could chew. It has a double trunk and 2 sister trunks...I'll have to take my time, I plan to jin for the first time so no rush..thanks for the inspiration!

      Great! No rush needed indeed. Just work systematically from bottom to top. Ensure the lowest 3 branches that you keep are at different height and each come forward slightly, as if the tree embraces you. Then branches closer to eachother as you move up along the trunk.

    Hey Jelle, love watching your videos. As someone that lives in NL (like you I presume), I had a question regarding this process. I bought quite a large Christmas tree (130cm) and kept it indoors for over two months. It has already started putting out new growth for a few weeks and I’m tempted to start pruning it quite heavily, repotting it, and reducing the trunk height drastically. Do you think now is a good time to do so? I’m worried the sap loss will be too high as I don’t think it went dormant due to me keeping it indoors. Thanks and have a great day!

      I do not live in the Netherlands though. I left about 2 decades ago. Dificult to judge. Main challenge with large christmas trees is that often they were not grown in that pot, but just plopped in the pot after digging up. If that is the case, it would be good to give the tree a growing season to establish new roots. If it was in there I would not be too worried about a first workover, pruning to main branches and setting them in basic shape, leaving fine wiring for early fall.

      @@GrowingBonsai Thanks for the tips, and apologies for having made that assumption. The tree has roots growing on the underside of the pot so either it was grown in the pot in a field and then removed or, like you say, removed and placed in the pot. I put it outside now and hopefully the temperature doesn’t drop too drastically before spring. Thanks again!

      @@GrowingBonsai I've also never had an issue cutting and repotting spruces at the same time but people act like it's insanity haha

    How do you style the tip? I always chop off too much or it looks like a torch :/

    Does it matter what roots you prune when repotting? The only repotting rule I know is it is best in the early spring.

    • @GrowingBonsai
      @GrowingBonsai  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes it does. one should be carefull when cutting bigger roots, and ensure there are plenty smaller side-roots on the part left over.

    • @GrowingBonsai
      @GrowingBonsai  Před 11 měsíci

      of course. It is a matter of letting one or mor branches run tall for a few years!
