Concrete is the second most-used substance on Earth (behind water), and it's responsible for eight percent of the world's carbon footprint. Cement researcher Karen Scrivener shares the research behind a pioneering new kind of cement known as LC3, which could slash carbon emissions from this crucial building material by 40 percent, if adopted at scale.

"20% pollution is caused by clothes production." A fact I think everyone should know. By simply buying less clothes or just sufficient can help a lot. Thanks
I think it has also to do with the place where the clothes are made. If you buy clothes from 10 euros, they are normally not made in good conditions. But if you buy clothes from about 50euros, you can be sure that the working conditions were already a lot better than the conditions with the cheap clothes.
@@arnodecoster6850 May be may be not.....
I support green nudism.
30% or so of emissions are made by the meat industry. I am a vegetarian now.
@@SuperJompaVideos that's not true, give me source of your info. If all people would be vegetarians the CO2 emissions would be reduced by 2.5%. You wanna reduce C02 emissions? Stop using cars, transportation. Yeah I know, people don't wanna hear that coz they value comfort more than environment. People like to hear that something easy as vegetarianism would save planet. And I don't blame them, big companies push that agenda coz they don't wanna stop manufacturing.... ;)
Now, it is up to the public to _motivate_ companies adapting to this. And you know how? Consistent co2 taxes from governments.

@Gerald Miller That being true, their not the only ones. As said in the video concreate is used everywhere. Even if China doesn't follow the rest of the world can. This is not a if they don't do it I won't either situation. This is a we have to act situation, so while yes it is cruial that China follows it is even more cruial to just start. Therefore quit saying stuff like China needs to do it as an excuse to not do anything and start motivating where you can.
(Writing this under the asumption that this is about the constant fight between USA and China and that "the other has to lower their emissions or we won't do it either" thing. It sonds like it.)
Put a price on carbon and the free market will solve the carbon issue in its own magical way including ideas like this.
Why would a struggling economy ever agree to that?
Keep dreaming , we don't have time to wait for the possibility that market gets it right.
@@sacksis a carbon dividend then
@@sacksis you can't just stop production and consumption, carbon pricing is an proven and effective method to change consumer behaviour, pushing them to more carbon friendly alternatives, including more repairable products.
Not all emissions are from consumerism anyways, transport, power needs, agriculture clearly all very important things that cause the majority of emissions and with carbon pricing, carbon heavy products and services get pushed out like coal has in the UK and innovative low carbon solutions become economically viable.
Wonderful talk! CONGRATULATIONS for 19M subscribers😍. Hope you would keep bringing such amazing talks in the future as well.
LC3 = a combination of Limestone, Calcined clay, and Cement. LC3 has the same properties as cement but with a smaller carbon footprint than cement.
If it were a country, concrete would rank 3rd after China and USA, in emissions.
Limestone and clay heated at 1450°C to produce cement.

LC3 is a remarkable achievement, less expensive and less carbon footprint than OPC
Question: What is the ideal CO2 PPM? 1000, 2000? It was >6000 in the past when life-on-earth exploded.
Thank you for special vedio **
Now I'm interested in the extra costs for companies to produce in a way like this. That's the only thing that is not mentioned in the video but it is a really important thing!
Of course, that is the important point to try to make things in a clean way. Governments should aim to invest in this changes to have real results in middle/long terms.
Producing LC3 is less expensive than traditional OPC
Okay, let's do this
Never said about the cost of LC3, usually it’s the cost that matters
Yeah, but if you're heating it significantly less (using less energy = saving money) and you don't need new equipment, it's probably pretty affordable. I mean, it mostly sounds like the ingredients haven't changed, it's just the proportion of them and how they're combined.
@TED scam
It's initial cost a higher a bit for placing a plant for calcining of clay. Otherwise, it's not expensive.

Title has to be: Karen wants to reduce CO2 emissions without freaking out
If we stop Co2 completely how will plants survive.
A little problem with global useful sand supply?
Cool now start doing it.
That was my TedPun
Planting trees instead of destroying them i feel would do the most towards cleaning up the CO2 and producing fresh clean air to breathe!
Science 101......
Trees will realise that CO2 when they die, called the carbon cycle. No bueno unless we pause humanity for 250 millon years to wait for the trees to fossilize.
The planet is more forested than last century.
However here in UK we have USA forests felled so we can burn in a huge wood burner called Drax, by the way, prime forests are felled. Then shipped in large boats across Atlantic. SO SO SO GREEN!!!
We can't entirely eliminate the need to build new buildings or remodel old ones. Trees are vulnerable to being cut down if people aren't protecting them (Trump was selling national land, remember?). Anyway, change needs to happen across the board; suggesting this idea doesn't contradict a desire to plant more trees.
@@KiKiStarling Do you realise how you guys ended up with a lot of the forests you have in America, especially out West, 150 years ago you have had to plant a great many trees as a building material primarily, so many things were derived from the lumber industry this was very intensive, this is clearly not the case at present, we have forest management but it went entirely the other direction and now we are extra careful with areas that really out to have had a good old control burn. We see forest on fire and have a virtual heart attack, having travelled around Australia a bit I saw plenty of fires the Aborigines did, the old time tested method of managing land, if it is good enough for the Aborigines then it is good enough for you lot over in USofA.
Again we here in the UK are chopping down virgin forest in the US for our "biomass", we claim it is green the irony, clearly this is not green or sustainable, it would more green to just burn the coal in the coal field that many of our power stations were built right on top of. INSANITY!!!!
@@TurinTuramber so planting trees can also help, cutting them down to build houses or for burning logs to keep warm.
I think that tree's do a far better job and provide shade retain moisture and hold the topsoil in place.
Heavy industry is by far the worst polluters and heavy polluters are owned by the banks and trillionairs who want to charge us money for their crimes against humanity and wont do anything to stop their criminal activities.
So if you feel that paying criminal for the destruction of our planet! Go right ahead.

Hello
If all emissions were captured during its production, concrete could become a carbon sink, because it reabsorbs some of the carbon during its life time in buildings
But how much energy is required to capture that carbon?
To stop releasing carbon, stop pouring concrete. Problem solved.
So why in India and Africa. If it is as good as regular cement why don't you use it in Switzerland and Europe?
Because companies are more likely to experiment with new materials where the cost of doing so is cheap
@@TheHorseOutside Experiments were done in the lab. She is talking about commercial product in Colombia. So if it is safe why not sell it in EU or CH? Because it is a bull$hit product which can not pass EU standards, that is why. No one cares if a building in Colombia collapses and kills someone. But if it happens in Switzerland she would go to jail. So she is being smart far away from her doorstep. Bit*h

This is good news, lets hope it is widely adopted. Concrete has been around for thousands of years, it is regarded as essential but we can use less of it. We can make it better and find better ways to reuse, repair and recycle it.

The stupidity of thinking plant food, the basis of all life on Earth, is a pollutant is so r-worded it hurts my soul.
The idea that “more is better” for anything that is useful/good in limited amounts is its own kind of stupidity.
@@christopherbrand5360 So what is the "limited" amount you're talking about? You must have an upper limit at which disaster strikes and the world burns, right?
@@chimpinabowtie6913 no, I don’t personally have such a limit (climate science consensus would be a good place to start). I assume that atmospheric CO2 is the “plant food” you are referring to. More broadly, agricultural fertilizer runoff is a serious pollution problem and both CO2 and fertilizer will kill plants if there is too much, to say nothing of all the affects on people. The premise that plant food can’t be bad (in any amount) is silly :)

Waiting for climate change deniers...
CO2 levels are not a problem you’re helpful and increasing crop . It is a un related to temperature which seems to be going down anyway.. Please study the sun , it’s cycles of sunspot activityand the upper levels of the atmosphere. Maybe maybe watch balloons in the air a presentation by to Irish climatologist. There’s actually no greenhouse effect . And if there were still two was only 0.04% of greenhouse gas the rest is water. So all of this is rubbish. Maybe the environmentalist crew could worry little bit about all the Hawks and owls that are getting decapitated by useless windmills..
You just can't be happy without lying about things, even though your lying serves no purpose.
CO2 is a part of climate change, and you said crops need CO2? Yes they do but most farmers use fertilizers which throw the CO2 back into the atmosphere. About 100 years ago there was 80-100 percent less CO2 in the atmosphere than there is now, and if that number keeps piling up it won't do any good, the plants don't need so much CO2.
you seem very worried and Hawks and owls. Have you stopped eating other animals?
