I Tried Landing On A GRASS RUNWAY

- Bob White Field is so close to where I fly and yet I have never been there.... Until now! I decided it was high time to try some grass landings. For my 2nd time doing it in a real world environment I was fairly pleased, but there is definitely some room for improvement.
Enjoy the grass landings!

Dude I flew out of a cow pasture strip in the 1970s in 172s. Started flying when I was 12. I didn't land on a concrete runway until I was 15. I was lucky. My uncle owned a freight service, flying school, and had a dozen planes. He's long gone and so are my flying days. Stay at it. It's a great life.
If you haven't done tailwheel flying, I highly recommend it. Especially doing that on turf!
Tailwheel really helped my piloting skills!!!
I second that!
I was about to say! I’ve got my tailwheel and oh boy do the skills come in handy. I was honestly surprised how much easier it is to taxi a Cub on grass than pavement.
When I learnt to fly (gaining CPL in 1975), I did so at Ardmore Airfield, near Auckland, New Zealand. It is ex-military, has runways that cross, in a form of "x" pattern. The sealed runways were in the region of 2500 feet long, and the grass runways about 1900 feet long (quoting from imperfect memory). One of the sealed runways (03/21) also had night flying lights (and it was quite delightful flying there at night, and occasionally going over to Auckland International Airport). All students learnt on sealed and grass runways. This was necessary as many country airfields were "grass only", and it would be suicidal not to learn to fly to and from grass.
Same down in West Melton. One of ours is sealed but the rest are grass
Hey Lewis, nice video! As a fresh PPL pilot, who did almost all his training on a grass field, it’s really surprising to hear it was your second time on the grass! You did it well :)
It makes sense to me now why we train with rolling into the takeoff without stopping. I wasn't sure, in training, why it was called "soft feild" take off. It was not explained to me. Now I know that if we dont keep rolling we could get our wheels stuck. This video encouraged me to keep trying the soft feild take off. I did not do well the llast time I tried it ( on pavement). Your editing is getting better by the way! I loved it!
Love seeing you do these different types of flying / landings. Great video!
Cheers mate!
Awesome 😎😎 always sharing .
oh dude your videos are getting so good from an editing point of view and content's always top notch. I feel like your hard work is gonna get you up to the 100k really soon!
Appreciate that man!
I was fortunate enough to train at a field with both paved and grass runways. Grass is always more fun! Take your students to both real short fields and grass, it makes it real for them. I’m glad my CFI was game to mix it up and go with me to some of the small fields around the area, we both had a blast.
Loved it. Grass today, dirt tomorrow... then gravel bar on river, then water on floats, then snow on skis... :)
Been waiting for this video for a long time great job LD energy inputs for landing, taxi and takeoff are a lot different than on a paved surface.
There’s no substitute for doing it for real. When I was learning to fly the airport had an unofficial grass runway adjacent to a paved runway. On one training flight we combined cross-country flight planning with soft-field practice by flying to a nearby grass airstrip in a Cherokee. Excellent! 😎
Bravo sir! Looked like a hell of a day to walk on the sky 😁
I’ve got my Tailwheel recurrent in a Cessna 170B model and transition from asphalt takeoff and landings on to unforgiving Grass takeoff and landings which you can roll it out with ease and little braking and I’m enjoying this video
Of late my training field has been very busy when doing circuit training so we’ve been heading out to a privately owned grass strip to escape the traffic. I’ve been loving the grass landings.
Good to see ya up there hitting the grass! I know there is one near Lake wales I've landed on in the blue citabria from Warbird adventures before they moved up North and there is one near Ocala (private home community) I've landed at with Warbirds again. I think the biggest take away for me was the bouncing around because the ground isn't perfectly even. I can't wait to see that multi engine flying video, maybe you should think about tacking the multi engine on to your license as well. New students!!
14:23 heyho.... are you a softy? 🤣🤣🤣👍
I love landing on grass. Super fun! Just wish i could do it more frequently
Very nice technique for as little as you have done on actual grass. When I was working on my PPL nearly 50 years ago at U of I we went to local grass fields on a regular basis. Obviously it was good training since I really never think twice about sod in the Midwest. I do a fly over just as you did which helps judge the condition. Great video.
Thank you! I need to go back and correct a couple of things, but overall I'm happy enough with my performance!
Loved the video! Been watching your channel for a while and its awesome to see you do some grass strip stuff! Im a CFI myself and do quite a bit of back country instruction so its really refreshing to see you spread some awareness about grass strip ops. Cessnas do tend to float quite a bit, and have a tendency to land flat so the dialog/corrections you made on your 2nd touch-and-go were excellent. Approach speed 60, and get the throttle out a bit earlier to minimize float and try to get the nose up as you enter ground effect. Would love to see you bring a student here, im sure they would love it! Much love, keep up the great work :)
Thanks man! Yea I needed to come out and land on a real world soft field. I noticed that I needed to bring it in a bit slower and as you say the 2nd T&G was a lot better. Always practicing and always learning!
That's awesome! Glad to see you landing on a true soft field. :) My instructor actually had me land on 2 different grass fields in training. One was a private strip, did an emergency decent to land from 3000'.
Thank you!
Great stuff from one Lewis to another
Cheers mate
At the end of the video you sound like these snooker 🎱 commentators from Eurosport! So relaxed and cool 😎 Selby is taking that shot with a confidence of an Eagle striking that black ball into the hole! Amazing videos, as always! I wish I could come over to Florida for few weeks and fly with you at some point!
Up here in The Great White North, we do soft field 4-5 months of the year. Flying off of skis in the snow is a riot.
Well done mate, amazing that you have only landed on grass a couple of times, in the U.K. it’s a daily occurrence… I am based at a grass strip so it’s at least one take off and landing every time o fly.
Thanks mate!
No trying here! You did it! Grass field landing and takeoff…. Nice job
Thank you! Always room for improvement but it went well
Your videos were always entertaining, but in terms of the editing, they seem to get more professional every time. This one stood out to me. Loved the placement of the camera under the plane, the narration, the jokes. You're a hard worker Lew, it's very apparent you have the drive and 'want it' badly. Mad respect, but above that, much love brotha! As usual thanks for another great one.
Very much appreciate that! Thank you!
I did all my initial training on a large 3 runway grass field. I struggled going from grass to paved runways a lot, mostly centreline since I never had one on grass, also grass you know from the noise/vibration the aircraft is ready for take off, on paved I was pulling back late.
airspeed
When you said those guys would be judging your landings, I felt that haha!
😂😳
So fun to see you, an experienced pilot and FI, being so precautious with soft field take off and landings. Is it because USA is mainly paved runways, or is it just because of the region you fly in ? Here in France, it's very common to use grass fields.
Very nice and peaceful video by the way. And it's a good thing to value small fields and small field owners here on youtube ! Could probably help beginner pilots to get out of the rwy pattern and explore new places carefully !
Thanks for all of that !
Ha, I'm french too and felt the same! Learned on LFGO and it's always funny hearing others, mainly Americans it seems, treating grass runways as a special thing where it's just a norm here.
There's just way more paved runways than grass runways here. But this place is so close to where I always fly, there was never a good excuse for not going there. I'll definitely be going back to practice more!
Here in PA we Always land on Grass
I actually prefer a well maintained grass runway. I find them easier than paved runways, because it is IMHO easier to judge your height just above the ground.
There is a house I pass on the way to work that has a grass strip in the backyard, and what appears to be a Piper Cub in the garage alongside a car and a lawnmower. I keep hoping I'll see it take off or land one day. So far, no luck!
Lewis - the usual good stuff from your channel! My only b*tch would be slow ... those ... radio ... calls ... down. There's lots of student and low time pilots out there that would just miss half the call. Still trying to work out your accent - Birmingham? Greetings from Oz!
Im a student with 13 hours, just after first solo. And my home airfield is soft field. So I never landed on concrete ) So it very curious to watch experienced pilot to land and takeoff on soft field for the first time ;)
Lew! I've been blethering on about 23N for eons and you made it to a Turf field -- awesome!! Did my PPL at 23N, which was a class G cutout out of ISP's Class C airspace. That meant, with trees at end of field, Vx, Vy, the TPA was 600'. Definitely a good pucker factor test, if you're in Long Island, NY.
15:48 That one was textbook - the nose-gear held off more.
Continued success with your channel.
Nice! Thanks brother!
Good stuff I only operate outta grass strips very rare I see a paved strip haha great vid all the way from aus🇦🇺
Cheers mate!
Cool Beans! Flying out of Manchester Barton it's the grass I'm used to, and the hard stuff at Blackpool I seem to plonk myself down on to. I guess it's just what you're used to, so trying something different is definitely worth it. ✈️✈️
Always wanted to fly out of Barton. Used to pass it all the time on the way to Trafford Centre
@@LewDixAviation well anytime you find yourself back in the UK, brews are on me.
Landing on the pavement here (you would call it a sidewalk) would be an achievement as most would only be about 6 feet wide then a building! Surprised your grass experience is so small as cfi I would have thought you would have more. Taking students to a grass field to practice soft field for real is far better than simulated, I am sure we all agree with that. Maybe introduce students to soft field on these airfields. Fantastic video as always Lew, is there a challenge which is one challenge too far?
Did I hear you say it isn't on the chart? Sure seems to be on my chart. Also worth checking out Bob Lee (1J6) just north of Deland. It's a fun stop grass strip as well.
No I showed it on the sectional on screen lol
Great video as usual! Come see me at Leeward for a really nice grass strip. George
You know... I would consider a great many of the runways you landed at in the Bahamas soft field! It's beautiful out there, but some of the runways are a better part gravel!
😂 tire changes after every landing in the Bahamas. Governors Harbour was a particular rubber cutter!
Nice video and just saved $20 on Flying Eyes with your code! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Sweet! Thanks for using my code 🤙🏻🕶
learned on grass, C86, very forgiving, easy on tires, hate pavement!
Grass is more friendly then pavement
Lol, you were so nervous to land on grass. I did a load of hours at Barton, Manchester, which are not only grass runways, but very short. Apparently we could do land outs at Blackpool but the people from Blackpool couldn't do land outs at Barton because it was too difficult.
Try a wet runway with puddles.
Chuckle. I've not used a tarmac/concrete runway yet. Only grass. So your practice take-off just looked normal. :-) No wind today, so with only 450 yards to use, approach landing over the hedge at 55knots max. Correctly trimmed, the C152 flies itself down until we flare.
haha nice
I was hoping you were gonna tell us you were buying that Quad City Challenger
Just for future reference... Hens don't crow like that :D That was a rooster. Hens are pretty quiet for the most part...
I'll remember this for the rest of my life!
Get a bunch more clearance for your nosewheel on landing. Get slower, so you can get that nosewheel up high without floating
Yea that’s what I noted from my flight
Yes ACS PA.IV.D.S9 busted! Gotta learn to land nose high. I fell out of the habit for about a year and just landed flat until a buddy of mine pointed it out to me.
Grass is great! Now find an old taildragger with a stick and fly it off of grass 👍. I recommend a champ, but I'm biased!
I'm wondering about your comments regarding calling up and getting permission and stuff. The map and CS show its public use, not private. Does it have to do with the landing fee? I've never been to an airport with a landing fee. How does that work with touch and goes too? One charge per landing, or maybe one charge per day?
Idea: Patreon donation goal for ASES at Jack Brown's. I'd love to see your videos about that.
That would be cool
👍
Omg I can't believe I have landed at grass more times than lewdix.
Okay now I want to see you do a simulated engine failure on soft field.
Challenge accepted
Nice video, Lewis. Do you have to (meaning are you supposed to) let the folks from whom you rent the plane know that you'll be landing off-field?.
Thank you.. No the owner trusts me enough haha. He watches my videos so he's always watching 😂
Why are you on the left side 🤣😂👌🤙
We'll never know!
Never thought a Cessna would be this biggest plane at an airport/strip
😂
PS - suggest holding the nosewheel off for much longer. Yes, bring it in a load slower.
Yea I needed to bring it in slower. Regardless, it was a positive outcome ☺️
Hello from Holland... Whats the hight your were flying in the circuit?
In the US it’s generally 1000ft above field elevation.
Just me or does everyone with a PPL also talk to themself like Lew does on takeoff/cruise/landing? haha
When are we going to see some taildragger action out of you? 🍻
It's on my list!
@@LewDixAviation I just so happen to be in Florida with a Skywagon. 🤙🏼
About 12:30: Hahaha! LOL! I know who HE is! EDIT: I also sub to "Backcountry 182." He's really interesting! He has the AoA gadget and he lands at about 45 kt! No float/ballooning! He lands in some extremely tight places and on gravel bars! You hear the stall warning just starting to sound. When I'm done what I'm doing, I hope, when I'm free, to learn how to land on grass strips!
Hey, fun video. I practiced some grass last summer in the Cherokee. Question: Weren't those grass landings a little flat?
Answer: a little flat yea. Needed to slow it down a bit more. Didn’t stick in the mud though 😉
@@LewDixAviation that’s never good, sticking it in the mud. LOL. Come up to Ottawa, we can practice landing on a snow and ice packed runway :-)
14:24 That's what she said... unfortunately.
So do you fly on the right side because you're a CFI or do you have another reason?
Exactly 🤙🏻
Why are you sitting on the left side this time? 😁 Just kidding.
😂
Lew in a Cessna? Kind of a hypocrite don’t you think
Why u flying a cessna when u don't like them
Interesting. It does not appear that you flare the Cessna on landing. Another point is a soft field takeoff done properly should shave your tail camera from the tail tiedown fitting. Come to Texas. We’ll show you why grass runways are great! Keep flying!
Well, coming in too fast doesn't lend itself to a massive flare. But the tail cam is deceptive too.
@@LewDixAviation the offer is always open! If ever in DFW area we’ll get you some fun flying that isn’t squishy like Florida…😝
Why on the left this time? Shouldn't a CFI be on the right? 😂
Also, I'd be interested in a simulated engine failure onto grass, especially since that's where most forced landings will be. Maybe a sequel?
Sequel! Absolutely want to do that
honestly if my instructor never sat in the left seat his whole life, i'd prolly have more confidence in him. The training seat.
