  • The 2017 Honda Rebel is a great bike and I've enjoyed riding it for the last two years. The only thing I don't like is the front suspension. It is soft, bottoms out, and causes a really bumpy ride. My plan was to install an Ohlins or YSS spring kit to help stiffen up the front end and get rid of the bouncy front suspension. However, they are all on back order and wont be available for a few weeks. (I plan to make a video detailing the install and thoughts)
    Next best, and cheaper, alternative was swapping out the factory 10W fork oil with 15W to see if there was any difference.
    I'd really like to hear your thoughts about the front suspension on the 2017 Honda Rebel CMX 500. I used to have a 1980 CMX 500 and the suspension was no where near as bad as it is on the rebel.
    Hope this video helped you out and thanks for watching!

    Great job on this project! It was very helpful! I have a Rebel 500 and the suspension is terribly soft. I just replaced the rear shock with some Progressive 430 shocks meant for a Harley XG750(?). It made it quite a bit firmer, and raised it a little, so that was a welcomed surprise. I'm just in the process of putting my Commander III Cruisers on and I also just installed a set of HyperPro Springs along with a made up concoction of fork oil...I'm guessing I'm somewhere around 23-25W oil. I'm a big guy, so hopefully that makes the front end more appropriate!
    Working on the bike is super easy, everyone! You can do it with some simple tools! Safe riding everyone!

    They definitely need to be stiffer and this is a nice way to help it out some. Anything is good.

    Thanks for a terrific video. As a new Rebel 500 owner, it gives me confidence to think I might be able to do this myself!

    Thanks for all the details. I like the fact that you included torque spec. I’m going to use this video when I install fork boots, covers and cowl. 👍🏽

      Glad it helped. I pulled all the torque specs from the Honda service repair manual.

    Great how to video brother. It comes very handy when servicing my bike. I will be honest. I would rather just change the springs, but I am glad that you shared the outcome, so we can make the decision. Again great video...

      Thank you and glad it helped. Changing just the springs is really the way to go. I went this route only bc I couldn’t get my hands on the spring kits and was kinda curious about what kind of different the oil would make.

    Nice video and good job.
    I think I'm going to change the front springs on my 2022 Rebel, the suspension feels very soft and it bottoms out easily. Although in my case, I am going to take it to the workshop, I do not consider myself with the ability to do it myself. Greetings. ✌

    Wish I had your mechanical skills.
    I think my Rebel would be well served if I had my friendly Honda dealership take care of such improvements.

      Thank you! I’m a hobby mechanic at best but I enjoy getting my hands dirty and making sure the job gets done right. Bring that Rebel in for some TLC!

    Hey, fellow rebel rider here, nice video. I have a question, after the 10w to 15w oil swap do the front fork still has that "drag bike" feel, to be honest the softness of the front spring kinda bothers me usually at launch and acceleration, do you think I should change the spring kit?

    • @goinhigher
      @goinhigher  Před 2 lety

      Thank you! Yes, there still is a bit of softness during acceleration. I would change out the spring kit for sure. The heavier weight fork oil just prevents the suspension from bottoming out. The general ride quality feels more or less the same. When it warms up a bit here in NY, I plan to purchase an Ohlins spring kit. I'm hoping the spring kit will stiffen up the suspension.

    I'm contemplating installing aftermarket springs on my 2017 CMX500 so I'm very interested in anyone's experience regarding this.

    wait you installed only new oil and the overall height lowed ? why ? Is it OK like that do you feel the difference ? I would also like stronger stiffness but i dont know if i want to lover my front fork.

    • @goinhigher
      @goinhigher  Před 2 lety

      The height of the forks remained the same. Only the travel of the forks was reduced by 0.5 inches. I feel a very, very slight difference. The major difference is I noticed the forks won't bottom out as they did occasionally with the 10W oil. I had originally planned to install an Ohlins spring kit with the new oil, however, the kit was backordered. I may try again this summer with the new springs.
      It would have been better to try with with a 20 or 25 weight fork oil versus the 15.
