  • Launched in 1983, the Kawasaki gpz900r is considered the original predecessor of the modern superbikes. With the introduction of this superbike, Kawasaki introduced a lot of innovative and revolutionary features that we take for granted these days.

    GT750 was first production motorcycle from Japan to use liquid cooling,get your facts right please.

      Thanks for pointing out the mistake. Yes it was the Suzuki GT750 which featured the liquid cooling for the first time.

      @@RevvingHeart the Goldwing may have been the first big four stroke water cooled,not long after the GT,as for the GPZ,well it was revolutionary in many ways and paved the way for a new breed (bonkers fast)of motorcycles.

    I bought a GPZ900R, (Ninja 900), in May of 1985 after arriving in Zweibrucken Germany on my first assignment after graduation from USAF pilot training. I rode that bike all over Europe during my three year stay in Germany, it was an awesome bike. Shipped it back to the states in 88, bought a ZX7 when they came out in 89. Rode them both for several years. Wish I still had them both, but especially the 900. I still ride, but have moved on to dual sport bikes, currently riding a 2010 KTM 990, 640 Adventure and a 300EXC. I miss my 900, what a way to see Europe.

    By early 1987 everyone in the market were buying the Ninja. If you saw any "Sportbike" back then it was a Ninja. Because of this, I bought a new 1987 Honda CBR1000F Hurricane w/the rare Black/Monza Red color scheme. For a few years in the mid 80's, it was Ninja or a Hurricane that dominated the market.

    The 900 Ninja was also the first to put the cam chain on the end of the engine, therefore allowing all 4 cylinders to be put much closer to each other. I believe the Ninja's engine was just as narrow as Honda's V-four engines of the time.

      I can't tell for certain, but at that time it was one of the most, if not the most compact engine for its capacity and no of cylinders. And thanks for pointing out the fact about the cam chain 👍👍.

    I always thought thT the ninja was born out of GPZ LINE. The GPZ DID NOT HAVE FULL fairings. Just a small one down low.

      Yes they were game changers. But it was the GPZ900 that raised the standards for the superbike to a whole new level.

      @@RevvingHeart Z1 was the turning point with an engine that really changed everything ,,there were many bikes in the 80s that went the sport bike route ,putting a fairing and low bars wasn't exactly something new was it?

      True, but I don't think it made as much of an impact as the GPZ900/Ninja 900r did on the motorcycle industry.
