- This video shows the operations of two ferry service companies, the Delaware-New Jersey Ferry Company and the Virginia Ferry Corporation. Most of the footage, taken on August 15, 1951, is of the New Castle-Pennsville Ferry. Before the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened on August 16, 1951, the ferry service between Pennsville, New Jersey and New Castle, Delaware was the "Shortest Route South & West." The Kiptopeke Beach - Little Creek Ferry Service, which connected Virginia Beach, Virginal with Cape Charles, Virginia, is also shown.
The film includes vintage cars, work trucks and trailers, vehicles boarding the ferry and paying the fare, passengers milling about the boat, ferry boats docking and launching, and a few vintage license plates. The S.S. Florida, Pittsburgh, and New York are a few of the featured ferry boats.

I grew up in the house on the pennsville side what used to be the Sinclair Gasoline Station , good to see at least the Sign there in movie , very cool
Amazing footage! I loved this ferry ride when I was a young child, and I was disappointed when the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened.
I am sure you were disappointed. I loved taking ferry rides from Seattle WA to islands in the middle of Puget Sound in the 1960’s when my family lived there.
I also enjoyed so much the 2 times I took the Cape May-Lewes Ferry as an adult. We’d take it more often but it’s a longer trip home for us than driving. I do think that if you consider that ferry ride as a “day” trip rather than an alternative route it makes for a much better way home. ❤
How long did it take to cross from Pennsville to New Castle? There’s nothing like the excitement waiting to load, be allowed out of the car, going upstairs to get a treat (hopefully), and walk around to see the view.
You don’t get that - well maybe a touch of the view part - if you’re driving over a bridge. Ty!❤
@@leekoss7083 As I recall the crossing only took about 10 minutes. Sometimes we didn't even get out of the car.
Ty for answering my question!❤
Incredible footage of the ferries before the Delaware Memorial Bridge and the Chesapeake Bridge and Tunnel opened. The ferries from VA were repurposed for the Cape May-Lewes ferry, also opened in 1964. Next year (2024) is the 60th anniversary of the CBBT and Cape May-Lewes Ferry.
Rode that many times !!
The FLORIDA and NEW YORK, renamed JAMESTOWN and NEWPORT respectively ran across Narragansett bay from 1958- 1969
Wow! That means I got to ride on one or both of these boats again when I went to the Newport Folk Festival in 1964. I had no idea!
Very cool!
Wonder what the toll charge was shortly before the bridge was completed? I remember when it was just the single span & the 2nd span was being built.
How many vehicles could they carry at one time crossing ?
Depends on how many trucks were on board.
