Hong Kong’s Fenwick Pier to be demolished after serving foreign navy sailors for decades

Hong Kong’s Fenwick Pier, which has welcomed foreign navy ships and sailors for decades, will be shut down on February 11, 2022. Owned by the non-profit Servicemen’s Guides Association (SGA), the city’s only American navy pier was built in 1970 on what was once the harbourfront in the Wan Chai district. After Britain returned its former colony Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty on July 1, 1997, the government asked the SGA to serve all foreign military ships, including those from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Peru, Thailand and Netherland.
In 1994, a shopping centre called Fleet Arcade was opened at the pier, helping foreign sailors with hospitality bookings, questions about Hong Kong and other services. Many shops in the arcade closed when land reclamation work began nearby in 2011. The more-recent Covid-19 pandemic was a further blow, leaving only a few remaining businesses that must leave in early February 2022 before the building will be razed to make way for a fire station.

Why would you treasure foreign warships in your country? In most other countries, this is not acceptable.
Tailor shops are mostly disappeared in US. There are a few shops for suit alterations.
I visited Fenwick Pier the first time in 1994. I bought a set of china for my wife then. I was back again 2015 and seeing how much it changed was shocking.
Seeing as 2015 was still before the events that have more recently tragically occurred in Hong Kong, was it much better in 2015 or had it still gone downhill since 1994?

I am sure most of you would have heard the quote “the life of the world is nothing but a game”. And of course each game has an ending. So to simplify things- life is basically like a flowing river in which nothing stays.

Doesn’t stop it feeling like another sweet thing is being lost in the world. We may have gained things massively technologically in the 21st-century, but more so than not, I still feel like we are losing more of what was worth cherishing that has been gained. I am very much child of the 21st-century, and have no memory of growing up with the things that my parents once knew, but I can still see that they are things that are worth protecting.😔 It seems like in China and Japan they are more happy to see these things slip away than most. 💧

I go there for the books, magazines,DvDs and for my monthly haircut in the '90's.The only McDonald's near the sea side.I feel sad this place will be just a memory.

Omfg, I used to get my uniforms tailored there during port visits when I was on the USS Kitty Hawk from '99 to '04. Great friendly people ❗
also it was infamous redlight district for foreign troops and foreigners.
That wasn't Fenwick Pier & the Fleet Club .. that was - and IS - Wan Chai.

As myself and others under this post and elsewhere under this video have stated, naval vessels from around the world will often visit foreign ports. Personally I've been lucky enough to get onto visiting warships from Malaysia, Japan, France and the US.
No need to get so triggered into silly comments. That's one of the mistakes the original post made.

World is keep on turning. Some business last for generations but change of location is necessary to keep up with the world.
Of course the pier needed to be demolished and redeveloped. No needs to serve the foreign navies.
There are still these old tailor shops all over Hong Kong especially around Tsim Sha Tsui. But most of them are on their last legs since there are no more young apprentices any more.
The site will be used for more housing to benefit Hong Kong people 👍😃

Hong Kong is not Hong Kong anymore. The Hong Kong that we have all grown to love was an admixture of Cantonese (not mainland Chinese) heritage and British rule of law mixed in with Indian, Pakistani and every other Asian and European ethnicity. The cultural mixture created a unique, romantic Hong Kong that can never be replicated, not even in Singapore. It is forever gone and forever will be missed. The future of Hong Kong will be very Mainland Chinese like. Those of us that were lucky enough to be in British Hong Kong and saw its development from a fishing village to a global financial center (especially in the great decade that was the 80s), saw the handover, and its legacy the past twenty years will forever reminisce and cherish its past glory until death. I love you Hong Kong.

Fenwick Pier was for SERVICEMEN from docking naval ships, largely from the U.S. The retail prices (and rents) were deliberately kept very low so that those servicemen could AFFORD to purchase goods that would be priced differently in the rest of expensive Hong Kong, much like a commissary on a base. This is WHY regular HKers could not visit & purchase there!
It’s also a sign that Hong Kong should no longer focus on serving the western foreigners, their former master mandate, an advocate of democratic freedom.
