I rode a used 2018 today. I was pretty nervous that it would be tough to handle in a corner with the big 240 rear... nothing could be further from the truth in my opinion. You do have to be a little more deliberate when you lean into it but it was a piece of cake. I'd never ridden a Fat Boy before and now I 100% want one! I've owned a Breakout, Streetglide and a Fat Bob. This bike is my favorite out of all of them. If you like the look but are worried about the handling, go ride one. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised! Thanks Jerry for this Video. I'd love to see you get on a Fat Boy and do some u-turns and other maneuvers just to put the poor handling rumors to rest!

Hows riding a big Fatboy as your first bike? Is it safe? I know for beginner riding a 1000cc bike would be fatal... Any advice?

Eee Cee Dubya Fan once you learn the friction zone and rear break technique it’s awesome and I don’t notice the weight just get your fundamentals down because if you make a mistake and you’re not strong like me it will go down... get your throttle and friction zone down make sure you’re giving it enough throttle and that’s always better than not enough if u feel you’re going too fast utilize the rear break while doing that and you’ll turn on a dime... I’m still practicing and I’m far from where I need to be but I’m already doing circles and getting tighter before I’ve even got in the msf class

Just bought a 2020 Fatboy 30th anniversary as my first Harley. I love the updated styling, that still nods to the past bikes and riders that came before me, but changes some things up.

Hi Jerry. I had an appointment to go and ride a 2020 Fatboy this afternoon and when I got to the dealer (here in Tulsa), they actually DID NOT HAVE A 2020 in stock. In any case, they let me right a Road King special instead and I really liked the way that bike road and handled. I don't want to make a decision until I get to ride a new Fatboy but I wanted to see what you had to say about the difference in handling between the two. The guys there at the dealer acted like the Fatboy is a bear to ride and handles terribly. In fact, they said only the Breakout is a worse handling bike and not by much. I'm not sure if they were just trying to sell me the bike they had in stock by discouraging me from the Fatboy, or if they really hate them that much. Do you mind sharing your thoughts? Based on this video, the Fatboy doesn't seem hard to handle. If you had to guess, what would you say the U-Turn radius would be for the Fatboy vs. the Road King? That should tell me what I need to know.

No changes ? Did they solve the summping issues ? How about the leaking of oil out from between the rocker boxes ? In '89 I bought a brand new Softail Custom, spent $8000 in motor work and chroming and the bike had essentially the same issues as the new ones. The Evo had a 3 piece rocker box configuration in which not only did oil leak but the middle piece started to get flared out from the heating and cooling of the engine. Then I had engine oil leaking from my crankcase into my primary case. Ironically I worked with a guy who's brother was a designer for HD and he gave me the two top dogs in charge of customer service at the time. Long story short, the cases had to be replaced (due to a design flaw) and I lost one whole season of riding and to top it off, I had to pay for the work (not the new cases) to be performed. Here it is 30 years later and HD still doesn't have its shit together but yet would like for me to drop basically a house (or portion of) down-payment on a motorcycle that still has the same f¥¢k!ng issues as it did 30 years ago ? Please, tell me that they've straightened these issues out so 8 can either buy a new bike or put the money on another toy ! ...

I ended up putting a stage 4 kit and exhaust system and all. I guess it’s not too big a difference but my 2020 looks different. Anyway, please forgive me for sounding argumentative. I'm more partial to the original Fat Boy style 1990, remember, with the yellow rings on the rocker boxes...although this is a "nice" bike, I think it might be way overpriced for what it is....

I bought one when they first came out. I like the bike but decided to move on, the only problem is the resale on these are atrocious. If you're looking to buy one of these look used as they're selling at firesale prices.

You were talking about 25.6 inches of lean and then 24 degrees on the old bikes. I'm guessing that was supposed to be 24 to now 25.6. degrees. So looking at the dial of a watch each second represents 6 degrees.. So 1.6 degrees wouldn't even be be half a second more lean. Don't understand how that would be much of a difference at all. Just sayin.

    • @motorman857

You can't understand it but me, being an expert on leaning, can understand that is a BIG difference. I can tell a Huge difference on a Street Glide with 1 inch shorter shocks than a Electra Glide as well. It's my business to know the difference.

The air filter is the dumbest thing ever; can't ride the bike in the rain without putting a sock over it to keep water out. That is a $20,000 motorcycle?? The license plate mount is also dumb as a bag of rocks. It sticks way out to the side beyond the width of the motorcycle. What are the odds of the license plate mount being there in a year? Instrumentation where you can't see it unless you take your eyes off the road. Poor lean angle. Harley-Davidson is in trouble man and they need to be making smarter not dumber motorcycles. This bike is nice to look at, but a dud if you like riding. Would like to see Motorman review some motorcycles from the likes of BMW, KTM, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki and Royal Enfield. Motorman's reviews of Indian motorcycle models were great and should be continued. Shocking that Harley-Davidson keeps churning the same models and can't seem to get out of their own way. Not a Harley Hater as I've had 2 of them. Harley-Davidson is on the ropes financially and they need to work smarter.

The motorcycle industry has had a tough couple of years, but H-D's sales decline is much greater than the industry and not at all like the growth brands such as BMW and KTM are experiencing.
