  • This is the second video in our Magpul Hunter American Stock series. This time we'll discuss the some of the differences between STANAG and AICS BAMW's (Bolt Action Magazine Wells). We'll (very) briefly go over some of the AICS-pattern magazines we had on-hand at the time of recording.

    What would you recommend with the hunter stock for 350 legend and the 7.62x39?

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 9 měsíci +2

      If you already have both rifles, I'd say buy one Hunter stock with the AICS BAMW and another with the STANAG BAMW. If you do it that way, you'll be able to swap the STANAG between both stocks with just a 3/16" hex key. Even though you can get caliber-specific AR mags, the AICS magwell is good to have on-hand if you decide to buy something that can use it in the future - 308 WIN, 6.5 Creedmoor, etc.
      We had one viewer that contacted Magpul trying to buy the AICS magwell. He said that they wouldn't sell it by itself.
      FWIW, I just put some 7.62×39 brass into the AICS that comes w/ the standard stock (PMAG 5 7.62 AC). The taper on the cases looks like it will cause feeding issues.

    Just curious, you mentioned your 300 BLK rifle not liking CCI #450 primers, why are you using Magnum primers in 300 BLK?
    in my hand loads I'm using standard CCI #400 primers in a subsonic load using Hornady ELD-Match 225 grain, and my Ranch rifle absolutely loves this load.
    Got my Magpul stock ordered and it arrives tomorrow, and I hope it doesn't change anything for the worse. 😁

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I was using CCI 450's in 300 Blackout simply because it's the primer I have the most of on hand. FWIW, I do have 400's, but they're what I have the least of on hand.
      I don't have it in front of me right now, the Lyman manual (#51) has loads that use CCI 41's.
      Congrats on the new stock. It seems like the main complaint that people make about Hunter American stock is the added weight (~ 3 lbs.).

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 8 měsíci

      UPDATE: All of the 300 Blackout load data in the Lyman manual (#51) calls for CCI 41's, btw.
      I decided to redevelop what's looking to be our pet load with CCI 41's, just to be certain. The first (and only) round I fired from those fifteen rounds backed the primer about half-way out the case. Never again.

    So, just to clarify, the MAG931 takes the 5.56 AICS magazine? Which will work for the 300BLK?

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 8 měsíci

      Short answer; Yes, yes & sometimes.
      Long answer; Yes, the MAG931 accepts AICS magazines for 5.56. That version of the stock comes with a 5 round 7.62x51 (308) mag.
      AICS mags for the smaller case diameter rounds are not common and they tend to be problematic. but they're typically available from the bigger online retailers. I've had the best reliability using the MAG1100 in the 5.56 & 300 Blackout rifles. I used the Ruger 223 AICS mag and it didn't work for me.
      The best recommendation I can give for them is to buy just one to try before you commit to using it exclusively or buying more.

    Will the hunter american stock with AI magazine well work with a 1st edition ruger american in 300 blackout that had the rotary magazine. I have heard that it will not feed the ammo. I would be using MDT ai magazines designed for 223.

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 8 měsíci

      I can't say for sure. If it means anything, our 5.56 rifle originally had that terrible rotary mag as well.
      300 Blackout does tend to have atypical problems, especially with the heavier bullets.

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 8 měsíci

      Also, I know at some point Ruger changed something about the Bolt (according to their CS rep).
      If you go to Ruger's website you can do a "serial number lookup" that can show you the year your rifle was shipped (it's toward the bottom of the Customer Service page). I don't know if it means anything, but the 300 Blackout on the channel shipped in 2019.

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thank you. On the rifles, we have the Badger Ordnance Tactical Bolt Knob. The 5.56 (OD Green stock) has the standard length knob and the 300 Blackout (black stock) has the shorter "mini" version of the knob.

    I wish i could get a Hunter' stock for my Rem 700 that fed AR-10 mags...
    Does it exist?

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I know Magpul makes Hunter stocks for the 700. I believe it's the only Hunter stock that has a long action version. Unfortunately, I think the only option from Magpul for detachable magazines is AICS. Hopefully, the industry continues with AR mags in bolt actions.

    Does the Map 1207 Stock work for the Ruger American Ranch that takes AR 15 mags in 5.56?

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yes, that's the main reason they made it. I know there are other cartridges that SHOULD work with the 1207, but this comes straight from the product page ...
      "*NOTE: Compatible ONLY with Ruger American Predator and Ruger American Ranch rifles chambered in 5.56 NATO, .300 AAC Blackout, .350 Legend, and 6.5 Grendel feeding out of a STANAG/AR magazine in the current OEM stock.
      450 Bushmaster chambered rifles use a proprietary single-column detachable box magazine and are not compatible. 7.62x39 chambered rifles are equipped with a factory stock using Mini Thirty® magazines and are not compatible.
      Fits right-hand receivers only."
      Does that answer your question?

    • @mnrodriguez
      @mnrodriguez Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@FFEReloading yes! Thank you so much! I hope I can use my AR 15 mags (5.56)

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 10 měsíci +1

      No problem.
      I tend to load 5.56 rounds longer than AR Mag length (2.260") so I can't say for 100% certainty that it WILL work. I intend to use the 2.260" COAL in the future because I assume most folks plan to load for AR's which would make my load data useless for everything but a bolt action.

    I’m getting the Stanag for my 450 bushmaster. I’ll use the rifle if I can get it out of the terrible factory stock.

    • @FFEReloading
      @FFEReloading  Před 9 měsíci

      The factory stock does leave a lot to be desired.
      If you're interested in my (longwinded) opinion, read on.
      Before you buy the STANAG version of the stock, keep in mind that Magpul says the stock is only for rifles that originally feed from AR mags. Granted, they're probably only saying that to cover their ass. You might actually be better off buying the "regular" version of the stock and buying the STANAG BAMW separately.
      Here's why ...
      The magazine that comes with the "regular" version of the Hunter American Stock comes with a 5 round AICS pattern magazine intended for 308 Winchester & similar cartridges. I don't think I've seen an AICS mag hold more than 10 rounds)
      Taking a quick look at the SAAMI drawings for both cartridges, I can confirm that 450 Bushmaster and 308 Win have the same case head diameter (.0.473"). The case diameters are very close, too (450 BM - .4820"; 308 - .4540 where the body and shoulder meet).
      If you're willing to use the (expensive) AICS-pattern magazines, theoretically, you shouldn't have any magazine related issues. If you buy the STANAG version of the stock, you MAY have feeding issues.
      It's also worth mentioning that one viewer reported that he mistakenly ordered the STANAG version of the stock. When he contacted Magpul to order an AICS BAMW, Magpul told him they don't sell it separately.
      To me, the $60-ish to be able to use AR mags is worth the hassle of returning the stock (assuming you're buying it online). In all of these scenarios, the waiting would be killing me.
      EDIT: Corrected typos

      @blauer2551 Před 7 měsíci +1

      I just swapped the factory stock today and the new MP came with the AICS and it won’t feed. I’ll polish the feed ramp and try different ammo. Chambered in 450 and using Federal Whitetail 300 gr which are flat nose so maybe Barnes or the FTX will feed? It’s leaving a visible dent on the lead so the polymer tip might be required.

      I just took a look at the reviews on magpul. Be advised; the review is for the STANAG version of the stock. Here's the first one I saw when the owner specified 450 Bushmaster:
      magpul.com/hunter-american-stock-ruger-american-stanag.html?mp_global_color=118
      I'm looking for more solutions for you 450 BM folks.
      See post #24 by Mad Mac. They shed some light (and links) on magazines being the prime suspect, mainly the follower. The solution may not be helpful for hunters.
