    I read about that 1993 attack at Byron Bay, Australia, the day after it happened. What I read was that John Ford and his wife, both from England, UK, were on their honeymoon. John saw the Great White heading straight towards his wife and pushed her out of the way. The shark took him instead and bit him clean in two. Much respect to him for his courage.

      I'm not sure about the physics of "pushing someone out of the way" when you're floating in water. I'm not saying he didn't attempt to, I just don't see how it's physically possible.

      @@SharksHappen That arsenal is useless against sharks. Those men in the ship never knew what was coming. It doesn't matter what their job was or what job they were doing. Not only were the initial survivors of the blast having to cope with being dumped in the ocean in total darkness, surrounded by burning fuel oil and wounded men, but after the shock of that type of violence had to deal with days of psychological and physical stress that the average person will never experience. How horrible it must have been to be thirsty, hungry, and perhaps wounded, floating or in the water for four days, seeing others wounded and being attacked, and wondering if you were next on the menu.

    • @CandyGirl44
      @CandyGirl44 Před 2 lety +29

      I read that not so many men were taken by sharks, but going mad from thirst, and drinking sea water, drowning, sunstroke etc, formed most of the casualties. The sharks feasted on the bodies. It's criminal that no heads rolled that those men were not rescued timeously - apparently distress signals were received, but one commander was too drunk, one thought it was a Japanese ploy, another said he didn't want to be disturbed during his party or bridge gane or something like that.

    • @frankorobinson1540

      Oceananic white tips i would assume, man those men had one hell of a week,delivering one of the bombs the help bring the war to a end eventually feeling like heroes 😉 then afterwards on way back to there Port they get hit by Japanese submarine, they lost men from the explosions ship sinks then there's not enough lifeboats for all to get out of water and the poor guys are getting picked off one by one ,horrible tragedy 😢 those men had the worst naval experience ever.then the ones that survived must have ptsd and nightmares for ever,I feel for these brave men ,I've read a few books written by survivor's and it was a horrible experience.

Makes me wonder when people talk about a 20ft shark and unable to distinguish what type of shark they've seen if it is because of the changes they make as their size increases. They would be very difficult to tell apart at that size, especially since the tigers lose their stripes, so I've just learned. *Crazy pic!!!! Wow!!!*

    That WW2 "pig basket" story was the most horrifying story I have ever heard about the treatment of prisoners. Those poor men...tortured in ways that we can't even imagine for days. Then getting fed, still living, to hungry sharks. To do that to fellow human beings...there are just no words. Anyway, In 1975 when 'Jaws' was released, I was in a book store looking for the Peter Benchley novel and I discovered a book that I mistakingly thought was 'Jaws' (judging it by the big shark on the cover; I think it said "The true story of Jaws", and I'm thinking like the dumb teenager I was "Wow, Jaws is true?" Duh!)... Anyway, is was a compilation of hundreds of actual Shark attack cases from the U.S. Navy's "Shark Attack Files". So I bought it instead of the 'Jaws' novel. Friggin' book gave me nightmares - but I could not put it down. It was absoluty terrifying, very graphic w/photos of ghastly wounds, and all I say is that truth is far more horrifying than fiction. Reading about all of those actual cases, so vivid in their details...by the time I got around to reading the Jaws book, it was ..pretty timid in comparison..Anyway, I don't even read fiction any more because there's so much nonfiction out there which is far more scary and interesting. Glad to see a channel like this recalling many from that book I bought in 1975. Terrific job!

The one that got me was the 20 ft Tiger Shark that held a diver in his mouth near the bottom as his dive buddy helplessly looked on, knowing he could do absolutely nothing to help his friend. Or the attacks on the young South American boys that were swimming in rough surf near a dock when multiple sharks attacked them, just ripping them to gory pieces. man something similar almost happened to me. my folks took our family on a vacation to St. Thomas, and booked us a snorkeling trip one of the days we were there. dropping into the water, we were already a little spooked by several barracudas just kind of hanging out beneath the boat, but the nervousness dissipated when they seemed uninterested. after some time, me and a few other people noticed a massive sea turtle swimming. I'd never seen one in person before, and it looked so graceful, so we all started kind of following it and just watching. after some time, i noticed i was the only one still following the turtle, as well as how far I'd drifted from the boat and other snorkelers. soon as I became aware of that, i then saw what looked like the silhouette of an 8 foot tiger shark materialize in the distance, seemingly going toward the turtle, as well as me. i never swam so fast in my life. I threw myself on the boat, told them i saw a large shark, and much to my dismay, nobody believed me. likely because i was only maybe about 8 or 10 and had already expressed fear of the barracudas initially when we got in the water. we were there for 5 more days and i didn't go swimming at all during that time.

I lost a strip of meat below my knee to the bone and got a fracture right above it just below my kneecap and still have a big knot on the bone and a big white scar. You won`t see me back in the ocean. Large fish started leaping out of the water right before I got slammed like a truck hit me. He started playing Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’, as the others on the boat were picking the bits and pieces of this poor man out of the water and putting them in buckets. These two were on their damned honeymoon. So incredibly sad… and could you even begin to imagine how traumatic it would have been to witness that? @@SharksHappen Once, I I went to Freeport Bahamas, and did only one dive. Before I dove, I told the guy, that I did not want to dive, if there were going to be sharks. He said there wouldn't be any. I dove about 150 dives before, all over the Caribbean, and had never seen a shark, and didn't want to. So I went down,, with about 8 or 9 other divers. When we got down to about 50 ft., the sharks came. There were also about 10 of them, and they slowly circled around us, about 20 ft. away. They were bull sharks, and reef sharks. My impression, was that they were like swimming statues, they were totally fearless. After that, I only remember seeing one shark, about 100 ft. below me. That was all, for 200 or so dives. So they are not everywhere, except the Bahamas !
