    Thanks for those who gave me the quote at the end. It’s a stark reminder that, although this episode is much lighter, a relatively relaxed situation in these deployments can become dangerous quickly. I talked in the episode about those who have to be away on active duty or deployment over holidays and how hard that must be, but there are of course those who never make it home to make up the missed time and memories.
    There is a quote from former president and general Dwight D Eisenhower that I love, given at his second inaugural address.
    “The building of such a peace is a bold and solemn purpose. To proclaim it is easy. To serve it will be hard. And to attain it, we must be aware of its full meaning -- and ready to pay its full price.”
    In a modern world of argument and political disagreement, it never ceases to amaze me those who are willing to, at a moments notice, pay the price for peace, for their homeland, for their family, with their life.

      Hello!
      Great reactionvideos and always interesting to receive feedback from viewers!
      I believe you missunderstand our quote at the end of the video. It´s not for the people who didn´t come home, because (spoiler) everyone did this time. The quote is directed to the loved ones back home who passed away during deployment and whom we never got to celebrate another christmas with.
      Best regards and keep up the good work.

      @ I’m actually really glad you gave the spoiler, I was kind of approaching every episode hesitantly hoping somebody wasn’t going to have something terrible happen and lose their life in one of them. Thanks for the interpretation!

      @@rayceofhistory We see a familiar face in this video the man talking about the presents and dressed as Santa in the beginning the man with the white beard he is the man from the series war for peace that you reacted to the Swedish soldiers in Afghanistan. He was the one that had the roommate that was killed by and IED in the first episode when they talked about it.

    Translation: The episode is dedicated to the loved ones who couldn't celebrate Christmas in 2022, especially those we never got the chance to celebrate with again...

      I absolutely love doing this stuff. It’s all stuff I love looking at and learning about, and I don’t take for granted how cool it is that I get to do it and interact with everybody on here. So it’s no problem on my end, and I definitely appreciate it. Thanks!

    Surströmming is not a super big thing in sweden and it certainly does not dictate our cuisine :) I think your would be impressed by some of the high profile restururants here in stockholm like Frantzén among others :)

    Jul = Christmas
    Julafton = Christmas Eve
    You really don't have to be afraid to try other foods from Sweden, most it is good, but all depends on your taste ofc :)
    Surströmming really isn't something most people eat, but ofc SOME people do and they always somehow convince foreign people to try it haha.
    Some of the food on display here:
    Aladdin - dark chocolate of different kinds. Very common around Jul.
    Julmust - very sweet, dark, soda. Does not taste like cola. It is a whole thing on its own.
    Abbas - pickled herring of different flavors. The one-true-brand according to most. Has nothing to do with the band.
    Julskinka - traditional christmas ham. Boiled, then put in oven with mustard topping it.

      Oh I’ve seen a bunch of different types of Swedish foods that look awesome. I’ve even gone through and looked at some different types of candy. But the surströmming has so scarred me that I would absolutely approach everything hesitantly on the first try.

      Surströmming should be seen as a spice. Nobody would ever fill up on black pepper because it's a spice.

  • @Tim_Nilsson
    @Tim_Nilsson Před rokem +2

    I've never tried surströmming myself and I'm not in a hurry to do so.
    I'm not particularly fond of pickled herring either but I can eat it. At least som variants. =P
    You traditionally drink snaps with it and that is the carrot. ;)

      I told the discord I’m actually convinced it’s some really old version of a bio weapon, and somehow signals got crossed between then and now and it became food. 🤣

      The short story is:
      Some Swedish traders sold their badly fermented fish in Finland.
      They were afraid to go there afterwards but when they did, the Finns Wanted more of the stuff.
      It became cool to eat the stuff. Being cool made it into a part of the culture.

    If you would like to watch another documentary, I can recommend 'War for Peace' (Swedish title is 'Krig för Fred').
    It is a documentary from the eyes of the soldiers that was shown in the spring of 2011, and is about the Swedish effort in Afghanistan.
    Six episodes of about 25 minutes each, unfortunately in very low resolution (360p) but with good subtitles.

    Is it only me that think Mikael that talk about the christmas presents in the beginning look almost a bit like that man in war for peace that was the roommate of one that was killed in action? In Afghanistan? His name in that series is Micke that is a nickname for Mikael I think it is the same man.

    I think its cool that Swedish men today are a bit goofy and fun, left this macho behaviar that some men still have. Im sure when the shit hits the fan these guys dig into the old viking roots if need be. I had a friend who was in the armor battalion that did UN service in the old Jugoslavic war, before he was this carefree guy always laughing and having fun. Some of the things he saw there though changed him, so brutal stuff they had to see in that conflict and they couldnt interfere unless they were in danger themselves. Obv these cowards who thought they were so tough, killing women and children and raping, always were making rude gestures to the UN soldiers but never lift up their weapons to make it ok for the UN soldiers to act. I hope this conflict is less cruel. Ty for a good reaction to see Santa´s Army
