    Pretty slick hinge idea. I have a soft tonneau but I don't want to spend hundos of $$ on a new one, so I'll be figuring out a way (and hopefully posting a video) to build one that is compatible with a cargo rack and still waterproof.

    Pretty sweet idea. Some brackets and 2 gas hood struts toward the cab, and 2 swiveling arms towards the tailgate and its golden. This looks like a great bed top tent platform too. I might try it. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Love it. I'll be making this to store kids baseball gear and our chairs for the season. I've had to unload everything each evening because of spring showers

    Another thing that might be good is you put weather stripping down each side. It would keep water from leaking in and it would close softer.

    Did you put two pieces coming down on the side right there and have this kind of like swinging freely so when you pick it up to a certain height of the pendulum straight down and there you go I won't have to worry about it again when you close it just put your

    I like your ingenuity! Any plans of it you can share? Size/length of underside structural boards?

    • @ScottRusson
      @ScottRusson  Před rokem

      Thank you, I appreciate that! The boards outside to outside are 52” with both being 48” long. The front board from outside to rear board outside is 42.5” and they are 49” long in between the side boards. The front starts 6.25” from the front plywood edge and the sides are 2” from the boards. I hope that helps!

    Maybe run a thin line of weatherstripping along the bottom edges to help minimize the noise when driving over rough roads.

    • @ScottRusson
      @ScottRusson  Před 7 měsíci

      I think that's a good idea - I haven't noticed much any noise, but it would be good to add, also help seal too!

  • @dalesworld1308
    @dalesworld1308 Před rokem +9

    Remind me not to ride behind you on the highway when that plywood sheet goes sailing off. You need something a LOT beefier than teeny wooden cleats and 99 cent bungees holding that on.

    • @ScottRusson
      @ScottRusson  Před rokem +4

      Someone else commented the same thought, you’re right, I’ll be looking for a stronger connection to use it at highway speeds.

  • @bobbysnyder3169
    @bobbysnyder3169 Před rokem +9

    Please, Nobody do this with a Sheet of plywood. Those Lil L Shape chunks of wood and those Cheap crappy Habour Freight bungee cords will NOT hold a sheet of plywood to your truck if you take it at highway speed. Grew up doing construction and watching plywood fly out of someone's truck at 60-70mph can and will get someone killed. I've seen half inch in the bed of the truck get caught by wind and lift out and go straight through the front windshield of the minivan behind them. That's why you use metal clamps, brackets, etc that's mounted/clamped securely to the vehicle.

    • @ScottRusson
      @ScottRusson  Před rokem

      Thanks for the comment, that’s a good idea. I’ll look for a stronger connection to hold it down instead of those bungees. 👍🏼

  • @ern48
    @ern48 Před 7 měsíci

    Great idea and nice but you seriously need to do something to hold it down to the truck beside the two rubber bands. With the right wind gust creating an updraft it will fly off of there faster than you can blink your eyes, it would not look pretty jammed through another cars windshield.

    • @ScottRusson
      @ScottRusson  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks, I understand the concern. It has the 2 wood pieces in front preventing the front from popping out, and the 2 bungee cords holding down the rear. So far I have not had any issues, or even noticed any rattling from wind trying to take it off while driving. But, it would be wise to think of a sturdier method. Thanks for commenting!

    • @ern48
      @ern48 Před 7 měsíci

      @@ScottRusson Take a look at the older Jeep hood latches. They are spring loaded only move 3/4" or so then come to a full positive stop, they might work well for your purpose or the turn latch set up you mentioned if it has anti turn built into it. Sorry to be so blunt, better to be safe than sorry.

    @scottrusson dude! I have been thinking over making a plywood deck for my maverick for a cross country trip. Jumped on and put in and searched “plywood bed cover” BOOM!!!! Do you have dimensions of your build? Love it!! Great work!

    how can you put anything bigger in with the pole.

    • @ScottRusson
      @ScottRusson  Před měsícem

      The wood stick holding it up can easily be moved to any spot, or if you have something large, you can just slide it in without the pole. 👍🏻

  • @wireworks616
    @wireworks616 Před 9 měsíci

    Nice idea, but you'd better secure it much more. That's gonna fly off and if you're in front of another vehicle, you're gonna have a hell of a lawsuit on your hands. I bought my soft cover for my truck for $170 on ebay. Very secure.

    • @ScottRusson
      @ScottRusson  Před 8 měsíci

      So far I've driven almost 1000 miles with it on, and it has worked well! However I do understand your concern, and I do take it seriously. If I think of another design, I'll share it!

    great idea. nice cover. maybe bungee the cab end of your cover so no one can lift it that way. Also. thy make a paint for wooden steps you may wish to paint that top.
