    in this movie Medusa's story is the saddest one. First she gets some "snuggle with a struggle" from Poseidon, then gets cursed by Athena when she "dared" to pray to her for help , and then she gets her head chopped off.

      That is what I don't understand, why is it suddenly Medusa is the guilty one, when she was raped by Poseidon. Athena just curse an innocent victim to add more torture for her suffering. Poseidon didn't get any punishment whatsoever.

    The first one will always hold a special place in my heart because I was just the right age when it came out, and culturally significant because *everybody* had seen it multiple times over. It was also a key movie of the early VCR age. The green screen is bad, even by the standards of the time, but Ray Harryhausen is rightly a legend and this was a fitting movie for him to sign off on. The old joke is that there was an entire generation who learned everything they know about Greek mythology from the movie.
    So it's the first one for me, and that's that.

      Not only that but the first film much like Jason and the Argonauts seemed like it wanted to turn a Greek Myth into a feature film, this film just wanted to put Greek Mythological characters in a modern story and while it looks cool even I had to go a few times and say 🤨 who the crap is that and those wizard guys made me say to my family 🙁 don't ask the fan of Greek Mytha because I have no clue what the heck that thing is.

    Sam Worthington is an example of Hollywood trying to force certain people on the public. Obviously with Avatar James Cameron likes him and for a while they were really trying to get us to ignore that he's as charismatic as a block of wood. • @melenatorr
    @melenatorr Před 3 měsíci +3

    In the myth, Andromeda is the correct female lead, such as one is. Io is from completely different story: she was loved by Zeus, who, in an effort to disguise her when Hera came close, turned Io into a heifer. Hera, who in some versions, had been informed about what Zeus was doing, demanded the heifer and kept her chained to a tree, guarded by the hundred-eyed Argus. Zeus called on the resourceful Hermes to free Io. Hermes, disguised as a simple shepherd, joined the very bored Argus and either played music to put Argus to sleep, or told a long story which lulled Argus into sleep. Hermes then killed him and freed Io. A furious Hera transferred the hundred eyes of her faithful servant to the tail of her peacock, and sent a gadfly to torment the wandering Io, who was still in heifer form. Eventually, Io reached Egypt where Zeus was able to transform her to human form. She had children by Zeus, and was, reputedly, an ancestress of Herakles/Hercules.
    So the screenwriters essentially created a brand new character and gave her the name of Io.
    Incidentally, Hermes was brought to trial for murder by Hera, but defended himself so well that he was acquitted.

    I recommend Wrath of the Titans. Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson together is just so much fun to watch. Personally, it was more epic. The actress who played Andromeda was replaced by Rosamund Pike. I was very disappointed as I was not a fan of Rosamund Pike…until I saw Wrath. I just fell in love with her and became a fan ever since. During the epic battle scene which I saw in 3d, I actually ducked for cover when flaming magma was thrown at the screen! I had fun with Wrath of the Titans. Give it a chance. As a kid I was horrified by Francisco Goya’s gruesome painting of Saturn Devouring his Son. So I wondered how Zeus’ father Saturn (Kronos) would be depicted in Wrath of the Titans. I was not disappointed! In this film, the King of the Titans, Kronos is the stuff of nightmares!

    In the original myth of Medusa, it was looking at her FACE that would turn you to stone, because she was so hideous. At some point though, she got rewritten to still being very beautiful even after her transformation, and now it was looking into her EYES that would turn you to stone. It's a revision in Greek mythology that I actually really like, and I'm glad this film followed that version, because in my mind it actually makes Medusa an even MORE dangerous adversary to fight against.

    Mythological Nitpick regarding Hades: Hades was largely uncaring about the affairs of gods and men. He was the god of the underworld, and to him, every creature, both god and men, would eventually come under his rule in time. A more appropriate god to be the antagonist of this film would have been Ares. A war between gods and men would have empowered him, allowing him to gain enough power to do what Hades did in this movie.

    I do like this one, but I prefer the original. Personally, I think Laurence Olivier giving the order to release the Kraken sounded better than Liam Neeson saying it. Seeing Pete Postlethwaite as the mortal father of Perseus was great, even though he did not have a lot of screentime. Another actor who had a small role was Martin McCann, who would go on to play Marine R.V. Burgin in the HBO series The Pacific. Before this movie, Sam Worthington had a small role in the 2005 movie The Great Raid, as a U.S. Army Ranger. It is based on the true story of the rescue of over 500 prisoners of war being held by the Japanese. The rescue happened in January 1945, with 122 men from the 6th Ranger Battalion going 30 miles behind enemy lines to rescue those men.

    It was Legendary (and WB) who remade this in 2010. Now that they have set up shop at Sony/Columbia Pictures, I have these anxieties that they want to tackle other Ray Harryhausen features (most of Ray's films were done at Columbia). Is "Jason & The Argonauts" or "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" next? Legendary has done well with their monster movies of late.

    • @donovanbradford8231
      @donovanbradford8231 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I doubt they would try as Legendary seem to have a good thing going at the moment with Dune and the Godzilla universe. We are getting a prequel to 300 soon from Synder and Legendary so at least for the time our childhood favs are safe.

      The look and story for the most part of this are good. But the original had better acting, more charm, seems to be held higher, and was the type of story you'd expect a Greek Myth to look and flow. This version sadly lacks a lot of the those qualities.

    With his Avatar star power the main reason for being cast - the film just needed more so they gave Sam Worthington an amazing group of actors to support him. I laughed when they gave him the shield made from the scorpion carapace - just like RPG games, he got a legendary blade gifted during his quest and then a group member gave him that shield, 'high quality'. Seriously, it plays out just like a game.

  • @jonathant4902

    This movie wasn't all that bad. It was punchy, had great pacing and was just an entertaining watch. The makers of the film knew what kind of movie they were making and achieved that goal. It had the right amount of edge and did not dwell on Perseus' grief for too long.
    One thing I liked to do was compare the depiction of Greek mythology in this and Percy Jackson, since they were released in 2010. There was also Immortals released in the following year. Now THAT one was interesting seeing how all the gods were depicted as youthful models.

    • @infinitelybi2064
      @infinitelybi2064 Před 3 měsíci +1

      It really was a weird time when all these "Ancient Greek" Movies came out, it was like each one chose a VERY specific Hero and expanded on their story. Yet I will ALWAYS hold any take Greek Mythology to the standard of The Percy Jackson series, which in my very own opinion is the EPITOME of blending The Old World with the New World

    • @donovanbradford8231
      @donovanbradford8231 Před 3 měsíci

      That was the one thing thing I disliked about the film were these Ancient Greeks saying we don't need or want the Gods of Olympus and my thought was if you chose to do Greeks there real that would make sense or even Greek characters that always had that air about them,but no they chose the characters that even in Myth asked for help. So while Iikex this version when it came out I preferred the original even then.

From my neck o the woods, and as reluctant as I am to say this really annoying cliche sentence, he is criminally underrated. But I'm actually being genuine, not jus saying words! He pops up all over the place and barely gets a mention

    Saw this in theaters. Thought it was pretty lame tbh. Gemma artenton (sp?) I thought was awful in this. The sequel is a tad bit better but not by much. I think immortals was better than them both. Mostly because the action is way cooler than anything in these movies. They all kind of corny though lol

      um... no, not really... anything with an exoskeleton can only get so big, because of the square/cube ratio. there were things that had insect like adaptations, but not real insects. about the size of a large cat, and millipede types as long as your leg were about as big as they got. oh, and dragonfly types with the wingspan of a hawk. but nothing riding size.
