You did a great job bringing that Kennedy tool box back to being useful!! The old American tool boxes were the best… my favorite is my grandfather’s who built his own during World War Two. He worked at the Newport News Shipyard. He worked on the “Juneau” where the 5 Sullivan brothers died as well as “Sullivan Brothers” replacement ship. I still use the tool box and his tools as well as my dad’s tools. I feel nothing available now can touch it. Thanks for sharing your videos with us!!!

That Kennedy is a fantastic find! I had one for years, same model, wish I had it back today. I got mine from a young machinist that got in a bit of trouble and needed a fast ride to the airport! Traded it to me for a hundred mile round trip in 1975. It was full of Starrett tools and full set of Craftsman sockets and ratchets. Still own all the tools today.

My uncles both had Kennedy carpenters tool boxes. In the 1960s they would load their boxes on the back of the Ford rack body truck along with any other tools they thought they would need and go off to the job. At the end of the day they would back up to my grandparents’ barn and unload. In 1971 they decided thet could buy a second truck for the business and bought a van. After that most of their tools stayed in the van and the rack body was used for errands.

As an Army Veteran I would like to wish you a great Veterans Day for tomorrow, ScoutCrafter. Thank you for participating in our liberty.
Apparently, Kennedy set the standard for tool boxes. I have two of the 520s and one sits on a Kennedy rolling cart that has an open front and two drawers on top of that. Couldn't find a number for it. All will close up and lock with a key. I'm very happy to have them.

I've got one of those! Years ago a neighbor died and the family hired an estate coordinator, or whatever you call the person who organizes selling the person's stuff. The old fellow was a retired airline mechanic that got his chops in the Air Force. He had 2 tool boxes. A Stanley mechanics box and one of those Kennedy machinists boxes. Both chock full of tools! And I got both of them. Drained my entire cash reserve but TOTALLY worth it!

Those are the things I like because you don't have to worry about getting them banged up a little or dripping oil or paint on 'em. I love the Kennedy machinist toolboxes. I have one which looks like yours, but I think is older. I have same number/style of drawers. The lid has a couple of horizontal folded bars I think for strength. No label, just the name "Kennedy" painted in cursive. It was well taken care of over the decades, no rust, just worn out felt in places.
My drawer slides do not have the spring pieces of metal you showed. Mine was a Craigslist find before covid. It was the sellers grandfather who had been a machinist. The sad and common story of the grandfathers house and contents being sold after he passed.
I also have a Remline machinist toolbox. Nice but not as nice as the Kennedy.
My most recent machinist toolbox is a wooden Gerstner. Not as practical as the metal ones, but I do love the look of the wooden machinist toolbox.
Your poor-mans flea market toolbox is a VERY good find. Glad this was rescued from the garbage. Cleaned up well.
    Dave.

I found one in the old Bargain New for $10 back in the 70s and still have it, (I gave it to my son) and it looks as new as it was back then. Do you remember the old Bargain News? • @brianlittle3452
    @brianlittle3452 Před 10 měsíci +3

The Kennedy tool box was a nice find and a wonderful restoration. A couple of items that could be useful:
Paint: Kennedy sells spray paint which costs an arm and a leg. Rustoleum has a paint that is a shade darker, but very close: Rust-Oleum Stops Rust MultiColor Autumn Brown Textured Spray Paint - Model Number 223523
Drawer Liner Material: Home Depot sells a black drawer liner that will protect tools for the person who is willing to live without the felt. Husky (Home Depot) Drawer Liners SKU 1000053594 18" x 100" Black.
Bottom Addition To Protect Removable Lid: On the bottom of the tool box are two “runners” that go from the front to the back. These runners keep the lid in position. The problem is that these runners can wear through the paint of the drawer. I put self-stick felt on the runners which prevents the wearing of the lid paint on the inside.
Side Handles: The 20 inch tool box does not have side handles like the 26 inch wide box. The side handles make it easier to move the box instead on the single top handle. To fasten to the tool box, use a bigger head screw as a Slotted Truss Head screw.
I bought a used Sears “Kennedy” tool box. Found out why the Sears sold for less than Kennedy - none of the small drawers had the same depth so I had to cut each liner separately. Nothing wrong with Sears box - still works fine but the Kennedy uses thicker metal and is more uniform.

Great video 👍 That Poor Man’s Flea Market is Gold 🟨! What a awesome find 👍. What a terrific idea 💡 with the sheet metal cookie 🍪 tin to protect the toolbox 🧰 from damage from the wire wheel. I also like the idea of using those Dollar store carpet for the relining of the box if needed for the tool drawer. It was pretty good to see the leather handle was in good condition. I seen some that were missing or some were all to pieces or dried out and deteriorated. I think you did a fantastic job putting that vintage Kennedy toolbox 🧰 back

Man John! What a score. I need to find a poor man's flea market like that. Living in the country we don't see much stuff like that thrown out. I was happy to see you pick it up and clean it. Those old Kennedy boxes are great. My grandfather was a machinist for Ingersoll Rand from the late 1940s until 1986 when he retired and he had several old Kennedy boxes. He used to upgrade every few years as his tool selection grew and he would always bring his old boxes home and use them in his shop at home. Great find Scout!

Great score on the Kennedy toolbox Scout. Again, I think you gave it just the right amount of cleaning. You can see the quality all over it, leather handle, double panel front door, roller draw slides ect. “Rota” is the old brand of toolbox that’s sort after in Australia and I recently picked up a Rota machinist toolbox. Similar in design to your Kennedy but it has a tambour or rolling slats on the front. They look very cool.
    Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

It always amazes me that there are people that will throw away something so valuable as that Kennedy box and a dial indicator

Many, many years ago the place where I worked paid for my Kennedy Toolbox and I reimbursed them a little each paycheck. Until recently It was in mint condition until something spilled on it and messed up a little of the crinkle paint. My favorite toolbox to this day.

That was a great find! I remember seeing this style of Kennedy tool boxes where I worked at for years. They were and still are a fantastic box for a machinist. This brings back a lot of good memories. Thanks for sharing this.

I've pretty much the same Kennedy. I absolutely love it. I picked mine up at a flea market, in need of seriously cleaning. I didn't buy new felt from Kennedy. I bought a roll from Joann Fabric and cut it to size. I used to work with felt in a previous job, so I knew how to make it work.

I have an old Dunlap, which is very similar to it’s “older brother” Craftsman, and craftsman machinist boxes were in turn made by Kennedy at one point. You can see the similarities in these three brands that I don’t see in other big name machinist boxes…..the single left side hinge.

The "Snoop" abides, txs for sharing...recently got a Honda "HRX 217" lawn mower side of road with "FREE" sign, did some carb worked then clean-up the blades, mulched my friend's yard of a ton of fig leaves and apple leaves so a real great find...

I found a carpenters Kennedy toolbox at a flea market. Paid twenty dollars for it. Great shape, I only had to polish the latches that were a little pitted.

Good find. I too trash pick. Right now I'm making a little router plane holder for my tool cabinet out of wood salvaged from an old dresser someone threw away. I go on bicycle rides the evening before trash day. Sometimes at the end of the month when people's rent expires also. Edit, I turned the dresser into a bookcase for my woodworking books. My garage is nicer than my house interior, lol.

Great video and great find. You are a lucky man. I hope you are playing the lottery. Thanks for the tip on cleaning those latches. The thin metal protector around the latches is a great idea. Have a great weekend and Happy Veterans Day Scout Crafter. Thank you for your service to our great country!
