    Most of these things don't work with big dogs that are seriously fighting. In my experience, if you pull on them with a leash or by their scruff, they just go harder. I had a couple pits that got into it and my neighbor ran over and told me to grab the hind legs of one and very quickly lift them up (wheelbarrow) and she immediately let go. I have also broke up a fight by dumping a glass of tea on one's head lol because it's what I had in my hand.

    It's super scary to deal with dogs fighting. Thanks Dr. Jones for your suggestions. The key is being able to read both dogs body language to discourage negative behaviours before they lock together and injure each other.Food & fear can trigger a fight but it's not always easy to understand why things kick off suddenly between dogs.

      This is a ridiculous video. He's dealing with aggressive play. He is not dealing with an all out aggressive dog fight. He's trying to pretend that he's employing magic to break up a elementary playground fight and pretending that it's a Chicago gang shootout. Good luck to those that buy into this.

    Oh, sure...people carry around a big piece of cardboard. The dogs in this video are playing.
    Real dog fights are vicious and the dogs do NOT even hear a command to "STOP." I have 18 rescued dogs and I have a cattle prod for when a fight breaks out. When walking a dog by himself, I carry a stick to ward off another dog from attacking.

      I have a rottweiler and have had dogs run up on us when their owners leave their gates open (I know, stupid and irresponsible) one case two big dogs came out and I was lucky their other dog was barking through the fence not knowing it was open (lol) I stood over my dog holding the harness and yelled out, "get back" while pointing at the other dog's house, I think they were more surprised than I was because they stopped and looked like they were thinking about obeying or just tearing us to pieces haha, that moment of silence bought me enough time for their owner to come out and call em inside.. if you can't stop a loose dog buy yourself some time for others to help or to be able to arm yourself

    Ok I have a question. I have been following you. So I have two German Shepard and great Pyrennees pups that are 15 months. They got along and then I dont know the wind changed and bam they hated eachother. So we kept them apart and my oldest son has one and I have the other. When he comes to visit we double check to make sure the cages are locked. It's been working but I unfortunately was running late I opened up the back door by the time I realized it that sage ( great Pyrennees and German Shepard)was out of her cage I let Hazel ( Her sister and littermate) was halfway in and I tried to stop her from coming in and they got into it and my hand met teeth
    Sage went to her room after fighting and it took a couple calls for Hazel to go to her room.
    Help

    At the dog park where I am, I've instinctively broken up a fair number of dog fights. If needed, I can have a loud voice so I yell NO as I get in between each of them. I always look back & forth. ...Never been bitten but if it was ultra-aggressive breed, I'm not sure I would intervene. So far, I haven't been harmed & the fights I've stopped have prevented harm to the dear pooches or people.

    Hi there! I have a question that can relate to this video as I am searching for some help with this issue I’m having with my dogs. I have a 1.5 year old dog and a 4 month old puppy. When I get home, my husband does, or we have any visitors over the puppy goes crazy on the older dog when she is greeting anyone. He begins growling and biting her neck and top of her back and barking at her. She usually corrects him in all other situations when he is doing something wrong but not in this one.., I’m confused to why? Is this jealous behavior? Or is it an attention issue? Once the older dog calms down from excitement then he stops the barking and lunging on her etc. Any idea what this could be?

She would have her pinned to the ground and sometimes take out a chunk of my bostons ear or draw blood from her. My boston was sadly put down in Oct. At the beginning of this video, those are just dogs playing. Real dog fighting is when your dog and another dog won’t stop attacking each other, no matter what you do. I only clicked on this video because today my two dogs got in a fight for 5 minutes, and thought that they were literally gonna kill each other! My first dog, Pixie, was barking at my other dog Marcy and then Marcy nipped at Pixie’s ear, which caused the fight. Right now, Marcy is going to the vet because she had 6 bite marks in her leg, a ripped ear (just torn up) and a messed up eye. However, my other dog Pixie, just had messed up ears and a bite mark through the tounge. Another way to see if your dogs are actually fighting is if they don’t stop to take a breath, and you constantly hear them growling and barking at each other, I hope my dogs get better soon.

    First. Wagging tails means excitement not necessarily happy. Rough play can sometimes turn to a fight. They need to be supervised and when it starts to get out of control it’s time for intervention
    You can use a flirt pole to try to get distance or have something like a water hose or a loud noise over their head to break it up. If you reach in to break it up , you will also get bit.

      Mel watch the dog whisper the one dog is dominating the other one which he is submissive, Cesar Milan usually will pin down the dominant dog put 2-3 fingers on its neck imitating a dog bite and he makes him stay down and brings submissive dog over to him, dominant dog stays down as you walk away and with submissive dog next to him and you tell him to stay down, don't command down just say, Shht, Shht in a dominant tone of voice make sure he does what his told. I hope you can understand the book I just typed. lol

      to prevent I watch as they play if it gets too aggressive for my comfort I clap and yell loudly but firmly and authoritative. when they are already fighting I've thrown a blanket on top or spray with water. if its real bad (only happened once) I thump on the nose. but it's best to stop it before it happens.

      lifting the back legs of the dominant one (the main aggressor) some dogs will let go of their bite immediately while others will hold on for a while but eventually let go. (maybe because blood is going to the head or just the strange position of only the front feet in the ground)
      if they take too long you can use your other hand to squeeze their throat, because the air is disturbed they will let go immediately.
      (the only down side to lifting the back legs is if you raise the dog up high into the air lifting also their front legs of the ground but they are still holding their bite, you can actually cause the flesh to tare in the dog that they are holding)
      another great tool (for constant aggressive fighters that won't listen) is a metal leash chain (not the very heavy ones) one lite enough so that you can swing it quickly. (you will only have to do this for one time)
      When they are fighting, lash both of them one or two times, while commanding them to stop.
      keep that chain with you so that another time when they begin to growl at each other just the sound of the chain will make them walk of. the chain also makes them take your command to stop seriously.
      when I walk my dog I always carry that spare chain, not for my dog, but any stray or dog that tries to attack mine. (it has saved me get bills)

      this can really back fire, the bigger the dog the more likely the person can get hurt badly, you could also end up hurting the dog too if things go wrong and you have to protect yourself, this is a high alert time for the dog who probably need exercise, a better diet and a job. Check out Zak on youtube, he knows his dogs, all kinds. Finding out the trigger and training for another response positively stops the problem all together.

    At the moment i am babysitting my friends two dogs. I have a Jack Russell cross of my own and today, I introduced our newest member of the family, Tessa. Tessa is half staffy half mix breed, anyway i introduced Tessa to my Jack Russell and at first he (Cooper the Jack Russell) Was a bit territorial which is normal but after about an hour they had a pretty serious fight. I got really scared for Tessa as shes only 12 weeks old so i had to literally yell as loud as i could " STOP" to make them get off each other. They just had another fight, and i have had enough dogs to know the difference between play fighting and an actual fight. I'm really scared for Tessa and Cooper. I don't know if its just cause there is so much going on with everyone outside with the new pup, or if they need more time then just a day to get used to each other. Tessa is a pretty big breed compared to Cooper and shes already the size of Cooper. Can anyone please give me advise?

    in a dog fight there is no lifting back legs is only break up fight fast without getting your fingers in there mouth. after that immediately assert dominance by pining down dog that started fight bring other dog next to it, if both dogs started fight they both need to be pin down next to each other until they both are calm next to each other. my point is Caesar Milan is the man, watch him.

    Hello, thank you so much for making this video, and I have a question of which I’m desperate for an answer.
    About a month ago my two large breed dogs got out, one a female, the other a male, they were away for about a week before we finally found them, however since they’ve come home, they’ve been acting different. The female has settled down for the most part and rarely acts out, as for the male- he’s been randomly attaching my other large breed male dog on a regular basis.
    We love them both so much and we don’t want to consider giving one away, or anything, but we need to find a way to make it all stop. Do you have any ideas on why he would be acting like that, or what we can do to get him back to normal? Please please please respond
    Love, a dog lover from Florida

      I know this was 3 years ago, but the best way to stop aggression towards on another is to walk them together. Best with two people so you can keep them on opposite sides, but it will train them to release energy together and work towards a common goal. When they attack at random like that it is typically because they are bored and they sense weakness and an opportunity to show dominance. Walk them together everyday and you should see the aggression decrease. Dogs need to be stimulated, and the worst thing you can do is try to keep them separate. Separation will create a me vs them mentality and aggression will increase, similar to that of leash aggression.

    My two dogs are always fighting it seems and it's exhausting. One good stare is all it takes sometimes. Other times they are like peas and carrots. I always go for the big dogs waist and pick up the back end off the ground. Works every time so long as my wife or someone is there to stop the smaller dog from pursuing as i drag the larger dog away from the fight. She's never tried to swing around and bite me, too busy trying to bite her sister still. I don't dare let the fight go on, because it seems viscous and they have both drawn blood before. Don't grab the back legs, grab just in front of them.

    • @meganwoehl5277
      @meganwoehl5277 Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Thank you! That is the number 1 mistake people make with the wheelbarrow method, they try to grab the legs. Instead you should wedge your hands in their hip pockets and lift up. They can't kick away, and they can't dislocate their legs. Come from the back, reach towards their waist, and scoop your hands back so that they are in the hips near the groin. Works like a charm and is especially good if you have two large dogs and two people so that each can do it the the dogs. If they swing around to bite you have control of their hips so you can just swing them around and get yourself out of their biting distance.

    The dogs are playing, in a real dog fight there is no time to start calling your dog or getting a cupboard surely..

    • @meganwoehl5277
      @meganwoehl5277 Pƙed 2 lety

      First instinct will always be to call your dog. It may not work, but its instinct and if they aren't too heavily engaged, a low deep growly voice may be enough to stop it. In dog training I use "off" as my negative command because it lends itself to the deep growl better than "no". Dogs communicate through tone and body language, so you have to know how to properly utilize your tone to communicate properly. Second, the cardboard is just an example of anything lying around. Typically people use break sticks. Which just requires you to grab a stick and shove it between the dogs, as soon as a dog bites onto it you push it back into their jaw to drive them back and they can't get their mouth off of it with the pressure towards the hinge of their jaw. It also prevents them from clamping down so if you can't force them back with it, it should atleast stop dogs teeth from doing damage.
      Both of these methods should be used before trying to physically separate them because as soon as you do, no matter which method you choose (wheelbarrow, collar grab, etc) you put yourself at risk of being bitten.

  • @jayniexo830
    @jayniexo830 Pƙed 5 lety

    This isn't too helpful unless you sense an attack before hand and happen to have huge cardboard sheets with you, but in the heat of a fight it's useless as they won't listen to voice commands and would have their teeth into their target and are likely not to let go there fore cardboard in the middle won't work. Also on your own it is nearly impossible to separate them unless you are very strong, also it really helps if you have help of someone to hold their collars each and safely try to pry their teeth off of each other, whilst pulling them away from each other and in a different room for a while.

    My dogs normally get along and will paly and sleep together. My female has food aggression. I feed them separately because of this. My female has attacked my male a few times because of random things like a baby wipe pulled out of the trash or a food package that fell on the floor without me realizing. She has attacked him 3 times now but every time it has been worse. This last time she attacked him pretty good and he received some deep wounds. My dogs play like in the video but dog fights are a completely different story. They are viscous and I think the attacking dog's mind goes into kill mode. This is how dogs or animals minds work. They pass a certain point and that is it. I love both my dogs and they don't fight normally. This last time, I've had to look into how to break up the fight faster. I found the "break stick" and I also found a video on how to use a tent stake as a break stick. I ordered a break stick on Amazon and then bought 10 tent stakes from Home Depot to place around my house to have handy. There are several videos in YT on how to use the break sticks. On the other hand, the last time my dogs got into a fight one of my dogs had really bad injuries. I took him to a friend who is a vet tech and she showed me how to care and clean out his wounds. Where I live the vet care is really expensive and I am sure this would have cost at least $1000. He had some wounds on the side of his face and ear that she was concerned about. She cleaned him out with hydrogen peroxide. She told me that I needed to clean out that wound several times a day and not to let it close for continual cleaning or it would become infected. She told me that if it closed up it would become infected and I would have to take him to a vet and it would be more expensive than when it happened. I tried my best not to let it close. It closed and he was showing signs of it becoming infected. He started looking up and licking in the air in discomfort and this lasted for almost a day so I knew I had to act quickly. I have what is called MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution) and DSMO. I read testimonials where people and animals with cysts or infection pockets used this and they were healed. My dog was in bad shape and just showing signs that he had an infection. I gave him 4 doses a day with a syringe in his mouth to take internally and I also made a spray to spray the external wounds. I also flushed out the other wounds with the MMS and DMSO combo solution. Even people and animals with cancer have been healed. My precious boy was better within 2 days. No problems since. He is back to his normal wiggle butt self. He's a boxer =0) and so full of love and personality! Here is the testimonials for both people and animals using MMS and DMSO. It's really amazing. It is truly a miracle how this solution works. mmstestimonials.co/

      With the wheelbarrow the key is that you have control of your dogs lower body. As soon as their head whips round, you swivel. It's like a dog trying to chase its tail. Keep swiveling everytime the turn to bite, and eventually when you have the opening, grab their collar and use your arm as a bar against their shoulder to prevent the head from twisting. Let the dogs hind legs down, pull straight up on the collar (not back, don't want to put pressure on the windpipe) and walk the dog away.

    I have a neighbor who has an aggressive dog and this dog is much larger than my two small dogs. Recently this dog unexpectedly was off leash and came straight for my little ones in an aggressive and dominant way. This really scared me and something snapped in me and I thought this big one is not going to attack my little ones so I used my lowest voice and tried to block with my body the aggressive dog. I then used the Cesar Milan suggestion of going for the back hind leg with my foot in a sharp kick and a Shtt! I always wear sandals for the most part so no damage done. It took me getting fierce to ward off the aggressive dog but it worked. I then used my body to lead the dog in another direction away from my little dogs all this while holding onto my dogs who were on leashes. I could tell afterward that my dogs sensed I was fighting for them, hard to explain but I had that feeling after it was all over. Thanks for this video : ) In my neighborhood there are so many aggressive, anxious, insecure acting dogs.

    My mom thought it'd be a good idea to "save" a pit bull last year from a guy who supposedly used him in fights. Long story short, we introduce him to my Dobe Shadow and a fight breaks out (3 months of doggy rehab down the drain).The hose wasn't doing anything and the only thing that stopped them was me picking them up by the collar and slamming them on the ground. My baby shadow got torn up pretty bad and im convinced that the pit bull whom we didn't even name yet would have killed her had I not intervened. This was a 60 lb (if that) Pit against a 70-80 lb doberman and still the fight was completely one sided. I dont have anything against pit bulls, but ive seen first hand how ruthless they can be towards other animals.

The German Shepard didn’t react good and the Chocolate Lab thought she was hurting my mom. The Chocolate Lab attacked her and it took forever for my dad to separate them. Thennnn, a couple of weeks ago, the German Shepherd attacked my Chocolate Lab but my Chocolate Lab won the fight and nearly killed the German Shepard. How my dad has been separating them is tying a belt around the dog and chocking them till their off. I’m to the point that if the German Shepard attacks my Lab then ima let my Lab kill her. The German Shepherd now keeps attacking my Lab’s face and she’s just allowing it. YOUR DOGS WERE PLAYING THOUGH.

Another dog attacked my dog at the dog park because some ignorant owner brought their dogs chuck It ball. My dog ran after it too and the fight broke out. The other dog ripped my dogs ear flap. Good thing they were close enough to the dogs and broke it up. But it was all so unnecessary if they only would follow the rules and not being in toys. So lesson learned. My sweetheart female pit who we have had for over 5 years will attack any other female we try to adopt or foster. She is fine with our males and did great with a female puppy (6 weeks old) she babied her. In fall we took in a small female dog headed to kill shelter and came home from work one night and she was dead....blood everywhere and pit was only one with blood on her and a few small wounds. We couldn't prove exactly what happened. We took in a lab/Shepard mix (female) again headed to kill shelter and today while at market pit attacked her. This time though the pit got some decent wounds. They do not fight when we are home. They play outside together. So from now on I have to lock everyone up for safety. So sad.
