1956 Continental Mark II "The Peak of Luxury For 1956"

  • Long appreciated for its timeless design, the short-lived 1956-1957 Continental was the epitome of luxury and style. The classic profile, with its simulated rear spare, was reminiscent of its predecessor. To add exclusivity to the largely hand-built Mark II, Ford established a separate Continental division distinct from the Lincoln brand. As the upper class began to seek higher levels of luxury in daily life, being as comfortable as possible while motoring around town or on the highway became a requisite; the new Continental, delivered that with style and elegance.
At a starting price of $10,000, the Mark II was the most expensive American car in 1956. Just 2,550 examples were delivered that year and 444 in 1957. With a wheelbase of 126 inches and a weight of nearly 5,200 pounds, the Continental Mark II’s massive size and superbly plush handling rivaled only Cadillac’s premium offerings. The model’s short-lived status as Ford Motor Company’s flagship can largely be attributed to its exceedingly high production costs: despite its astronomical price, the Blue Oval still lost money on each Continental Mark II sold.
The example offered here has benefitted from single-family ownership over the past 60 years. Purchased from the original owner in 1961 by the seller’s father, the car was regularly driven up until 1970, when it was stored away for the following decades. Restoration commenced in 2014 and continued into 2015. Originally finished in Dark Green, Ferrari of Ontario handled the cosmetic refurbishment, respraying the exterior to its current Medium Green Iridescent color and refinishing the interior in period-correct upholstery sourced from England. During this process the doors, hood, and trunk were removed, and all the chrome was sent out for replating. Later, RM Restorations took over the project and attended to the mechanical restoration.
Now in stunning condition, the vehicle was shown at the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance on the shores of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada. This Continental Mark II will be accompanied by a sales brochure, owner’s manuals, parts catalogs, and a technical data book.
The last word in American luxury, Ford Motor Company’s extravagant Continental set a standard for the era and remains one of the most elegant designs ever conceived. A true classic, every serious collector should consider placing a Mark II in their garage.

This one is a non-air conditioned model. Love those chrome plates on the inside door jam and on the door.

I noticed that also, you'd think a car costing as much as a house back then would've come with A/C as standard!

The days when it was easy to get in and out of a car 😊. Great colours to choose from back then, unlike today. Every time I see 50’s cars I wish I owned one again 😊

When cars are restored "right," they're hard to beat; particularly cars from say 1940-1966.

Beautifully designed car! Elegant simplicity. I remember it had several hand rubbed paint coats and was very expensive to produced.

    $10K new in 1956
    Only option was AC
    Hand built
Ford actually lost money on the car
cost them more to build than they sold them for.

I own a 1956 MKII C2436. It seems like fiction but it came to Brazil OK in 1956. Legend has it that it was white and was painted blue in the USA before shipping to Brazil, as another MKII had recently arrived in the country owned by the company Matarazzo and it was white. . The owner of C2436 didn't like having one of the most exclusive cars in the world where there were only two in Brazil and they were white. PS: translating into English by my friend Google

One of the most beautiful cars ever produced -BUT- I've never understood why a car of this caliber didn't have A/C as standard equipment - I know if I would've shelled out the BIG bucks for one of these back then I would've expected standard A/C! Also, why did they put an armrest in the back seat but not the front seat - I would imagine the vast majority of these MK II's rarely had back seat passengers. I also think the dash was sorta plain jane for this price range.

Ok….the car sold for $75,000. When new, it cost around $10,000. So in inflation adjusted dollars the buyer paid (before any buyer premiums) around 66% of original cost. Beautiful car….just not what I would consider a collectors car.

It looks like the bidding got up to $75k, but not sure the seller accepted that very low offer.
