    BTW, good condition is NOT necessarily indicative of lack of parasites. Someone I know sends out fecal samples and deworms based on results. All of her horses are in good weight, well muscled, and have nice coats. Several had numbers that indicated definite need for at least one product to take out specific parasites.

    Have you had a vet do a fecal on your horses to make sure they are worm free?

    • @MR-lq7ss
      @MR-lq7ss Před 2 lety

      Those are only as good as the worm population at time of fecal - it is helpful, but not definitive. I prefer to have it done as a double check after new horses are added to barn or pasture or after horses come back from show season - to help make sure my horse is "safe". I still use the DE anyway.

    G'day Becky! Thanks for all the helpful information :)
    About DE-worming animals, do you DE-worm your donkey Doodles? If so, do you use the same procedure and do you have any tips of Donkey worming?..and do donkey hooves/feet ruin the ground in any way similar to horses?
    It'd be much appreciated if you could make a summary Donkey-guide/care (including the pros&cons of Donkeys) video on how to best care for such wonderful creatures and how you handle Doodles. There's not much online about keeping Donkeys and I reckon your valuable information would really benefit those just like me, who are wanting to learn about Donkeys.
    Again THANKS SO MUCH! I've watched your videos for years, currently about to subscribe to you now that I've got around to making a utube account :D

    Hi Becky- I'm just wondering if you perform regular fecal counts on your horses to verify their worm count is under control. I'd like to use D.E. to control parasites because I hate giving my horses chemicals every month, but I've read articles that state that when tested clinically D.E. did not prove to be effective in controlling worms. Do you have evidence with empirical evidence to show that this really works?

    Good to know.
    My Arabian doesn't have a worm-gut. Gets hay daily though she just eats the 'loose' parts of it when she was never picky before and 3-Way isn't an issue with her at all. She's been losing weight for no reason despite being fed well. I've been trying to figure out if it's a minor case of worms or she needs her teeth floated.
    If you can pass some advise, Becky, let me know. I would love to get her back to her old self again.

    • @jessicatorres556
      @jessicatorres556 Před 8 lety

      I would get the teeth floated. i would also try adding Probios or yogurt to their diet, try putting them on soaked(about 2 hours til fluffy, never soak over night because it can start to ferment) beet pulp to add more fiber to the diet, also try adding a diet with more plant based protein, such as Healthy Edge by Purina. also try a worm purge, like this video, several days of deworming, several off, several on.

    There is nothing natural about feeding microscopic sharp fossilis to horses. Unfortunately, it doesn't kill enough internal parasites to help the horse either and the abrasive nature of the spiky silica can harm the soft digestive tract. What was your latest fecal worm count? It's the only way to see if your horses are infested.

      According to that site it cures everything including headaches, diabetes, high blood pressure, stress and "bad fat". It is nonsense. It would be lovely to have some magic natural powder, but unfortunately it isn't so. Please get worm counts done. If they are low, then that's fine and you know your horses are safe. I know you want the best for your animals, but sometimes people mislead us, especially about so called natural products. All the best to you.

    • @crazy808ish
      @crazy808ish Před 8 lety +5

      +D She There's nothing natural about commercial horse dewormers either. Furthermore, you eat diatomaceous earth frequently enough, as it is used to keep insects out of nearly all grains during storage or shipping. So why again is it not good enough for a horse?

      well not really, DE is not dangerous, and really a horse with a bad worm load has OTHER issues besides worms. ALL ANIMALS HAVE WORMS. When an animal is extra stressed or sick or otherwise unhealthy, the worms gain a greater foothold and become a problem. Wormign horses every few months is BAD FOR THE HORSE. Ever vet will recommend NOT to do this, but instead run a fecal on EACH horse and THEN decide on treatment. But in our fluffy little horse world we just want to think there's a magic bullet for everything.
