  • #Baker is the sixth woman to be honoured in the secular temple to the "great men" of the #French Republic, which sits on a hill in Paris's Left Bank. "You enter Pantheon because you love France", #Macron said.

      I know, it’s absolutely embarrassing. We’re supposed to celebrate when one of our own makes this kind of history abroad. This should be broadcast to the nation (the United States) and it should be followed up with an addition to the Smithsonian in her honor.

    The French carry high aspirations for humanity. This speech should be a lesson that all Americans can learn. We speak about liberty for all and yet we have yet to practice that. // It's wonderful to see Princess Grace's son Prince Albert in that audience.

      Americans are DECADES ahead of the French when it comes to race relations and reconciliation. I say this as someone who is not American. I actually consider myself incredibly opposed to American foreign policy, but on this issue, having visited both the US and France (as well as 50 other countries), I have to say that France continues to be one of the most racist countries in the world. In general, there is absolutely no willingness in the general public to engage in or accept any responsibility for the crimes of the past, and the racialized and Muslim population continues to live as second-class citizens in France. France doesn't have any major cultural icons speaking against the status quo (few if any of the "woke" Hollywood types in France, definitely no Kaepernick or Beyonce) and criticizing France as a colonial power is seen as quite taboo. In some ways, the rise of the far-right is even more extreme in France than in the US. You may have a romanticized view of France but living there as a person of colour is incredibly terrifying.

      @@frederic4844 it's you who should be embarrassed. You are a prime example of French attitudes on race. People like you think the French colonialism has ended but ask the protesters in Niger and Burkina Faso (some of whom were killed by French forces a few days ago) and they will tell you that the French continue to profit from their misery. The French continue with their paternalistic and colonial attitudes and the French public remains in total support of the oppressive French soldiers.

      You seem much better at assuming what people are or are not and think or don’t think based on no evidence than at correctly guessing it. If you feel entitled to do so … I can only be sorry for you.
      This being said, no matter how much you like or dislike the French foreign policy (or even neo-colonialism if you want to call it this way) your considering that it is race based rather than geostrategical is more a reflexion of your own race biases than anything else.

    A superb example of how a highly intelligent leader of a great nation can speak without woke stupidity, to speak NOT like Justin Trudeau...Moving, powerful and timely. Racism is mentioned but without denigrating France. Here, in Canada, many must learn from this speech.

    • @hamzasyed
      @hamzasyed Před 2 lety +4

      Actually Macron has repeatedly undermined and refused to acknowledge the continuing harm caused by France's brutal colonial legacy and history of slavery. He has told young French Arabs that they don't need to care about colonialism since they don't experience its effects. He has repeatedly been dismissive and rude to not just African leaders but to African people. Look up Macron's history of comments on Africa - it's really problematic. As a Canadian who doesn't usually support Trudeau, I definitely prefer him to this wannabe Emperor.

      I don’t know why you hate Macron but, even though, you should be honest enough to acknowledge that he is the first and only French president to call « colonization a crime against humanity » … but, usually, honesty, and hate do not go together.
