How to move past the messy middle of a painting

  • When you’re working on a picture, you can get to a point when you find some exciting areas, but it’s not quite working as a whole. Next moves can take you forward, but others move you back. I call this part of the journey the “messy middle.” It’s that point where you hit the doldrums and aren’t sure what to do next. Let me share with you what I do when I get to the messy middle.
Asking myself what I don’t like and what I have too much of helps direct my next move. If I see too much of the same thing, that’s an opportunity to make a change and bring more differences into the work. Regularly evaluating and asking questions as you create helps troubleshoot issues to keep you moving forward. Give it a try!
What questions do you ask yourself to move your work forward? Let us know in the comments.
This week’s podcast is about starting a painting and the psychology behind that. I’ve recorded myself talking while starting on this same painting. I’ve never talked through working on a painting without showing it, so it’s an experiment! I hope you’ll join me. I’ve noticed that as I evolve as a painter I get further along before I get to that uncertain place.

Thank you so much! It’s so easy to get lost-thank you for being a way-shower, guiding my development of my art from afar.

    I rewatched and I'm convinced you're using oil stick-- like R & F

But you’re right, it’s an oil stick, R&F which takes long time to dry.

@@carole2077 And you seem to miss the point of the comment somehow. If I liked Nicks jacket and wondered where I can get it, I wouldn't "miss the point of the clip" either.

I liked the scribble marks, different to anything else you had.

Love this and all your videos, thanks! At first I thought you were going to talk about the center of a painting. I know you've touched on that before but if you could do another video sometime, please it would be so appreciated. Sometimes I find myself avoiding the middle of the panel so much that it just becomes a dead zone. I'd love to hear some composition tips from you that address this issue

You mentioned adding liquin to oil pastels to help them dry. I was under the belief that oil " pastels" never dry. Can you confirm you use oil pastels ( not oil sticks etc) in finished work and it dries eventually with liquin?

They are oil sticks NOT oil pastels

I believe Liquin is highly toxic. Take care
