  • Why did Joey build up his new aluminum Stumpjumper EVO the way he did? Titanium eeWing cranks, XX1 AXS, and RW30 Fusion Fiber wheels on an aluminum bike? Well, he'll tell you why, and he'll even give you a sneak peek of what brand of tighty whities he thinks is best for MTB. What he won't tell you is why he thinks his Butcher tires are Eliminators, or what S30 rims are.

    The stumpjumper EVO Alloy is a pretty brilliant offering by Specialized. I have a 2021 upgraded non-EVO Carbon Comp that I updated with much lighter wheels (hand built spank 350's, cx-ray spokes, Bitex hubs), Elite fork/shock off the Expert build, 210mm OneUp dropper, Rental carbon bar and Apex stem. Awesome bike, super quick and only about 28 lbs. But part of me wants to sell it so I can try a EVO (most likely the carbon version though) just so I can mess with all the geo options and ability to turn it into a mullet. I do not even need another Enduro rig...I already have a V3 Evil Wreckoning....but still want a EVO anyway. lol. I've heard mixed reports about it's climbing efficiency. How much less snappy/poppy is it that the regular Stumpy?

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  Před 2 lety +2

      A decent bit, just by way of the additional weight and travel. Over half a pound of weight and three quarters inch of travel, so they're fairly different bikes. The EVO does climb very well though.

    Cool bike brother!
    I just built up a 2013 Kona AbraCadabra. Made her a 27.5 with Zipp Moto3 wheels.
    I went a bit heavier than my old setup. I’m old n slow these days with a new full knee replacement so slow n a safe ( not)
    Threw on me a 160mm Lyrik and a Manitou Mara . Enve X7 800mm bar . Went with an angle headset of 2 degrees for 65 ish head angle . New 2 speed x11 crank, XT rear derailleur, XT front changer and XTR sl Rear changer . Easton grips and 35 dia x 70mm stem . Yes long right . It works and may go shorter come summer.
    And a crazy ass saddle made by Selle Italia. Oh the rear cassette is a Garbaruk 10-46 11 speed .
    I don’t have the 46t cassette on yet . Running a SRAM 11-42 at the moment.
    Diggin the new 33# ride it was 29# as a 26”er .
    I have another 27.5” wheel set set up and a 26” rear too for a Mullet setup . As a mullet she rips our Central Illinois trails.
    I purchased many of the parts through Fanatik

    I'm a little confused. I thought the pike ult maxes out at 150mm on 29er. Did you upgrade the spring to 160mm? If I did the same, would it be safe? I have the same fork but thinking of upgrading my frame to an evo.

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  Před rokem

      So the new 2023 model year Pike does only go up to 150mm and you can't get an airshaft longer than that. Joey is running the 2022 model year Pike which it was possible to extend travel to 160 with an airshaft swap. So Joey is running 160mm on a 2022 Pike.
      This is the airshaft you would want if you are trying to up the travel on a 2022 Pike

The stock S4s we have in the shop felt a bit stretched out, but the stock S3 was a bit cramped. I knew it’d be easier to dial in my fit with the longer frame if I shortened the cockpit rather than putting a longer stem on the S3.

      To make things confusing, I'm just under 5'10" (9.75") and prefer the S3. The biggest thing is that the wheelbase gets long enough that I find it less playful. That said, between the headset and bottom brackets adjustments, moving your saddle forward/backward, and running a shorter/longer stem, you'll be able to make either one work for you. If you aren't able to find the two models to sit on and test ride, I'd compare it to your current bike, and factor in what you like/don't like about that, and see which of the Stumpys might retain/remedy those traits.

      I heard the Transition Outpost preheats sealant to maximize bead to rim adhesion-- I bet they'd sell you a cuppa that.

      @@toetaster That's a decent technique. We like to pre-heat the tire and the rim itself, because heating the sealant can cause separation of the various components (worse with some brands of sealant than others), insert the sealant through the valve stem, two full spins on each side, and then use our commercial-fishing grade flash freezer to bring the whole system to 306 degrees Kelvin to unify all the components into one fully finished component.
      Takes a while, but it's worth it ;)

    You’re probably more accustom to holding on to more meat than you expressed talking about these grips. Also put your coffee down hippie.

      Actually, Joey is vegan so does not handle any meat. Believe it or not, the cup was just a prop, there was no coffee in it. Good guesses though!
