Besides, who is denying atonalism? It's like denying Brahms or Sibelius: It doesn't make any sense because if it's art, then you could like it, or don't like it, or be indifferent to it. For me, this symphony is atrocious, something someone might have composed under the influence of alcohol or sundry other drugs. I could have composed this in the haze of a drunken stupor. I recall an episode of the Carol Burnett show in which they interpreted a fictitious piece of atonal music and it sounded like the real thing.

Brilliantly bonkers. Bear in mind my musical taste stretches far from this up to the death metal world, I adore the harshness of this, the purcussion cutting off the attempt at melody, squashing it down into an atonal fug.
Like the tenor of the times, much of the music of the 20th century is angry stuff. Rest assured Gorecki did not write this expecting to be handsomely rewarded. Henryk was six when the Nazis invaded Poland and the country went down the tubes. Think Warsaw Ghetto.
Comme beaucoup de compositeurs,musiciens très doués, du XX-ième siècle, Henryk Gorecki est tombé dans le piège du non-sens atonaliste , "must" si on voulait être bien vu par le régime scientiste/réductionniste Boulézien (confusion entre :" toute musique est une structure sonore" et;"toute structure sonore est de la musique") cf donc cette Symphonie 1 indigeste . MAIS , contrairement à bien d'autres qui y sont resté englués (Penderecki, Kurtag,etc , pris au piège dès le début , ou Kabelac , Kalabis, etc qui y sont tombés sur le tard ou très vite (Lutoslawski),après quelques oeuvres géniales ) , Gorecki a réalisé que c'était une voie stérile,juste bonne à ennuyer mortellement l'auditeur non-réduit à sa pensée abstraite , et là il s'est montré un tout grand (Symphonie 3 , Concerto pour cordes & clavecin,etc) : magnifique !! On ne peut que regretter tous les trésors musicaux que les autres auraient pu nous donner si on ne les avait égarés sur une piste foireuse....
I wouldn't say that Gorecki completely moved away from atonal music. While I personally love this piece, his use of atonality, and his ability to blend it with tonality, is absolute genius in his quartet Already it is Dusk.

Los dodecafonistas, Strawinski, Szymanowski, Honegger, Martinu etc. - ellos igualmente buscaban y experimentaban. En esto también consiste el genio y la creatividad, sin - por supuesto - olvidarse del corazón y del sentir en la música.
À en juger par ta façon d'écrire, tu as juste appris tout ça par cœur pour impressionner la galerie. Le sérialisme intégral n'est pas une mauvaise chose mais Boulez et les autres ont été trop pointilleux et cela les a conduit à une impasse. Ils ont alors pris des voies différentes : certains ont rejoint les compositeurs dits "des masses", depuis toujours opposés aux sériels, d'autres comme Boulez ont assoupli les règles du sérialisme et d'autres enfin sont revenus à la tonalité et c'est le cas de Gorecki.

Atonalism is now part of our common heritage. But not the only one. To deny it today is as absurd as to have denied tonality in the recent past.
