Proud Ecuadorian Carapaz returned home over the winter to spend time with his family and to train. We visited the Grenadier to take a closer look at his life in Ecuador and his racing origins.
So far in 2021 Richard Carapaz secured a podium in the Tour de France and Gold in the Tokyo Olympics Road Race. - Sport

From a farm kid to the world champion on Mount Fuji! What a inspiring story.
You know in Ecuador sport has no much support and cycling isn't something that we practice or a national sport so having a champion is something that surprised me, but the best part of it was that he won at Mount Fuji since I love Japanese culture and dream to visit that country in the future. I love your sentence.
I can only imagine the pride his family, friends and the people from his home town, are now feeling now that he is an Olympic Champion. Such a humble man.
Apart from being one of the best bike riders in the world, he is great human being and a fine example of dedication, hard work and determination!

La hermosa Colombia 🇨🇴 forjadora de grandes ciclistas, de Ecuador solo lleva la Nacionalidad la garra el coraje pero de Colombia lleva los cimientos la técnica la disciplina y el espíritu de aquellos magníficos ciclistas colombianos que dejaron una huella imborrable. I wasn't familiar with Richard Carapaz before his Olympic Gold Medal win yesterday, but having only recently starting riding he is an outstanding role model. What a beautiful place to have grown up, a connection to nature is what made him win.

I wish Richard knew just how much of an inspiration he’s been to me as well down here in South Africa 🇿🇦😉 I also pictured myself riding like him while training to lose weight in 2020 and through him I lost a whopping 21 kg in 9 months of pure torture and never say die spirit that’s made him a great cyclist...Richie Carapas and Nairo Quintana are my two climbing inspirations,both from humble beginnings of South America✌🏿

From the most humble of backgrounds, a king was born. The high altitude could be responsible in a peculiar way to provide him with this high resistance. Aquí un colombiano es tratado como cualquier ecuatoriano siempre y cuando haya respeto mutuo. En Colombia el ecuatoriano es tratado como un ser inferior y que al que hay que invitarlo a la puerta de salida. Eso sí es ser malagradecidos.

Carapaz has just this infectious enthusiasm and charisma about him that has been missing from grand tour champions. Probably since maybe Cadel Evans. Really excited to see him in the tour this year. I don't think it suits him but I have no doubt that in week 3 he's gonna throw the kitchen sink at the GC on the climbs and if they're not prepared for it, he will be on that podium.
