As a Democratic Socialist from Norway I have to remind you all Democratic Socialist's are the actual centrist party...not communists. Not even close. Communism and fascism are the extremes and very similar(communism in practice not theory). Democratic socialism takes the best of both system's such as Medicare for all, the military or the fire Department, which are socialist and communist idea's. As for Fascism we use Capitalism as a driving force for innovation and inspiration. America is very close to fascism now. Not only politically but economically. There is no competition and little to no standards which a capitalist society needs to survive. Monopolies owned by an investor class suck up all the money and destroy any competition or innovation. The way to fix that isn't voting...is unionizing. That's our real power and why they fight against it so hard. Making more Unions would do more than voting...but you can do both.

I'm 42 and I'm getting more liberal as I age. Growing up, I listened to my father's conservative views (he's been watching Fox News since it first started). The problem was, he sent me to a private school with people from various ethnicities and religions (it was okay for him, though, since they all had money) but that taught me to treat all backgrounds with respect. Then my husband and I moved to several different states, exposing us to new situations and realizing that no matter where we went, people blamed their problems on some "other" group when really everyone had the same problems caused by the general failures of our capitalist society. Add on to that the fact that I have a good, professional job and our family is still in mountains of debt made me realize even more that society needs a major overhaul. If we're struggling on my salary, how much worse is it for people on minimum wage?
I used to be pro-life, but how can we force people to bear a child that they can't afford to raise unless we change things so they can afford it? I used to be ambivalent about LGBT issues, more of a "don't ask, don't tell" mindset, but now I see how harmful it can be to force people to hide who they are. I used to follow the line of "immigrants are okay if they are legal", but now I see how difficult the country makes it for some people to be legal, when my ancestors just got off a boat and everything was fine. I have also learned a lot more about the real history of the US, and how we have constantly failed to live up to the supposed ideals of the country's founding.
I guess my point is, it's easy for a person's beliefs to stagnate if they don't get out of their hometown bubble and have some real interactions with people who are different from them.

I feel exactly the same and went through almost the same path as you did, I guess this is what the right calls WOKE lol and I am 100% OK with that.
And I make 6 figures and live almost paycheck to paycheck, I have had the same thoughts about how people survive on less if it's hard for me at my salary.
I don't know how my 18yo son is supposed to be able to afford a place of his own when a single bedroom apartment is nearly $2k in my area.

I'm 55 and I've become more progressive as I've gotten older. Much is to do with the progressive Episcopalian church which talks Christ's teachings to love and care one another, do not judge others, etc. As well as marrying into a wonderfully inclusive and accepting family, which has helped me to open my eyes to how everyone is every bit to raise a loving family no matter their sexual orientation choice of life partner. As well as being far more accepting of others of other skin colors, cultures, and nationality. And believe me, I know I am a far better person, friend and family member because I allowed myself to open myself to new and accepting ways of thinking and treating others different from myself.

Course I do have more money, but I sincerely doubt that's more than like 20% of that decision
I just don't care about money anymore because I actually have enough to pay for me needs and some of my cheaper wants.
But I still gotta save for many months to get enough together for a down payment on a used car.
So I'm basically in the middle. Too poor for money to be liberating, and too wealthy to have to determine which bills get paid on time... most of the time anyway.

When I had to have an operation as a young kid, my Mom had to work out a payment plan with the hospital (no nest egg, no insurance). I was lucky enough to compete and get into a great technical high school and proceed onto a tuition-free city college (the yearly administration fee was $34!). Out of college, I got a great job and eventually became financially comfortable. But NONE of that would've happened without free education opportunities and financial assistance when needed. "I felt that no boy should have to depend either for his leg or his life upon the ability of his parents to raise enough money to bring a first-class surgeon to his bedside. And I think it was out of this experience, not at the moment consciously, but through the years, I came to believe that health services ought not to have a price tag on them, and that people should be able to get whatever health services they require irrespective of their individual capacity to pay." ~ Tommy Douglas

I'm betting your relative is older. You had a great rebuttal. Here's another one. As we get older, we don't age like fine wine. Our muscles start aching. Our bones start creaking. And for old conservatives, you're seeing brain deterioration. Look at how stupid they are. Not one of them is capable of learning new things or self learning. They're just good robots rather than real human beings.
Look at your body. Think about when you were in college and you pulled late nights and allnighters and the next day, nothing. You bounced out of that bed like a well rested little bunny. Well, as you get older, it's harder. A late night means your miserable the next day and you start looking at mattresses and you understand why mattress stores exist. Sleeps important. You start being more careful how you move your body and you'll set up your project so that it won't hurt you.
Well, what do you think is happening in that brain? Most people don't read. So they're not engaging their brains. Most people don't like learning because they got their degree. Most people aren't active so no aerobic blood flow to the brain. That brain is atrophying inside their skulls. It's not a healthy brain anymore. It's like a morbidly obese patient that can't walk 10 feet without gasping for breath. That's what a conservative's brain is like.
Look at the conservative. Look at how shallow their thinking is. How intellectually lazy they are as they parrot slogans. Look at their emotional approach to any issue rather than the analytical critical thinking brain. Look at their debates. Who do these geniuses go up against? Children. They're preferred debating style is gish galloping and lying. They don't go after the adults, especially smart ones because smart adults will rip a conservative argument and stomp it on the ground.
Being old is not some magical virtue. In a first world society such as the US which has a generally stable political system and society, decent medical access points, food, public education, it would be very hard to not get old. Even in the middle ages, it was mostly childhood diseases that were the cause of the mortality. If you could get to young adulthood (and you weren't a woman or you weren't at war or there was a plague), you had a strong chance of hitting the 60s and 70s . Being old is not a virtue. Age is just a number.
I'm firmly convinced that if we have this correlation with age and conservatism 1-wealth accumulation but also 2- brain deterioration. I mean, look at the boomers. They were exposed to high lead levels. They were raised in a permissive conformist society. They were raised to believe in magic. They've lived in their safe little bubbles by virtue of being a massive demographic. They're violent as would be expected from their lead exposure and their passive from their conformist monkey demographic. I routinely question the capabilities of older people who are conservative. We all should. (Look, these losers couldn't even look up when the boomers demographic is generally regarded. That's why they claim credit for what their parents generation did. That's a clear sign of mental deterioration.)
And look at your older relative. This relative came away from the Christian teachings of " love your neighbor as yourself" " give everything away and pick up the cross", " turn the other cheek" and thought " fiscal conservatism" . That is my proof that older people aren't necessarily smarter or wise people. We shouldn't respect age. It's just a number. Instead, we should raise the bar. If you're hitting 70 and you can't speak 3 languages and explain how the government works, and have a deep academic understanding of your religious faith traditions and can do a bit of calculus (it's not that hard. ) and be a decent human being. Most geezers failed. They are unworthy of respect beyond the basic respect you would give as an acknowledgement to a fellow human being such as a newborn or a 5 year old

That was my turning point and when I looked back on the decades of presidents and politics and seen the unhealthy and hypocritical path of the republican party as I recollected administrations from Nixon to Carter to Reagan to Bush to Clinton and back to Bush. I remember how the media crucified Carter and then shoved under the rug all the dirt of the Reagan administration. While at the same time saying how the media was liberal. I distinctly remember my brother who became brainwashed into the church he still attends saying that back then. The teaming of the Evilgelicals and conservative Catholics to the Republican party was sealed when the GOP decided they were 100% anti-abortion. Even though abortion was a bipartisan vote. That wasn't enough for the 2000's. The Republicans had to bring in the Nazi's and the "white nationalists" (same difference). They distanced themselves from their log cabin Republicans to court White Nationalists at their CPACS during the W administration. The writing was on the wall - it's been on the wall - since Nixon, a good friend of Roger Ailes and who Roger Stone is still a fanboy of. Boomers were duped for sure.

I always say these people took my father away - but the reality was, I removed myself from his orbit. Here was a guy who had union jobs most of his life - did quite well - but always saw himself as something better ... those guys with the suits, playing golf on weekends... that was his club. The guys bitc*ing about undocumented immigrants, but still willing to close one eye and employ them to build their pool or fix their roof to brag about the deal they got. If I ever went back to blue collar work (I used to be an electrician's apprentice), I would first look for union shops. My past experience with a non-union shop was disappointing. That shop never sent to training - anything I learned, I had to pick up fast from the journeyman I worked with - but they were way too salty and concerned with finishing and going on to the next job to do any kind of "knowledge transfer". Instead of learning about electrical theory, I mostly wound up digging conduit ditches for $5.50 an hour (min wage was about $3.25 at the time). My friends brother was in a union shop at the same time - he dug ditches too - but they sent him in for training to help him pass the board tests. He worked hard, did a lot of overtime and retired early to a ranch in Montana with its own airstrip (and plane to go with it). For all their faults (especially when it comes to seniority privilege) - unions offer a lot of advantages for trades people.

    • @johnchance7836
      @johnchance7836 Před rokem

I grew up in the same era but the really sad thing is that the Trans movement is the new right wing bigotry. The new intolerance.
When I lost my virginity to date rape in 1998 it was feminists who said men couldn't be raped, and that was legally true. The definition of rape at the time was " “the carnal knowledge of a female, forcibly and against her will.” It took 14 years to progress and in 2012 the "Office on violence against women changed the definition to this:
"“The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.”
That's what the Trans movement accomplished, the removal of the word "female", suddenly my rape was legal because Jasmine tried to stick her finger up my behind without my permission. This year the CDC came out with these numbers:
"Each year, 1.92 million men are made to sexually penetrate, and 1.93 million women are victims of rape (3). In 82.6% of the “made to penetrate” cases, the perpetrator was a female (4)."
They have to use the words "Made to penetrate" rather than rape to get through to people but on a deeper level female rapists get away with it and walk away with probation or less because the laws against rape don't apply when the victim is a man. That's what we get when we start talking about people with or without a penetrating organ rather than having an honest discussion about sex.
The same thing happened when I was talking to my wife about abortion. I see it as a family planning issue where both parties need to consent to potentially having a baby at the time of intercourse, and then both parties need to change their position together later except in cases of rape or where the mother's life is in danger. That's because I remembering being deathly afraid my rapist would get pregnant and choose to have my child.
The idea of having to raise your child with your rapist, or leave your child with a rapist/abuser, or pay child support to your rapist his HORRIBLE. My wife said that I'd have a problem until I grew a uterus and could actually have a child of my own. That's where we are. I'm not a "Child bearing person", we don't dare say it's sexist and that the problem is that I'm not a woman.
But that's what GENDER is, it's systemic sexism. This is how the American Psychological society defines the word: "Gender refers to the attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that a given culture associates with a person’s biological sex (APA, 2012)"
And gender identity is defined as "Gender identity is a component of gender that describes a person’s psychological sense of their gender", or in plain english it's INTERNALIZED sexism. How awful and controlling is it to tell somebody ELSE what their attitudes, feelings, and behaviors about sex have to be? And you see that in every position the Trans movement makes, and the results of the social changes they advocate.
When I got treated for Dysphoria after my dad died my "Trans" friends insisted I HAD to be Trans.
I'm Ace and Demisexual, but also straight. It took decades for Fetlife to allow me to list both rather than assuming being Demi meant I had no sexual preference. Even though I fought for years to let people be either straight or Gay I had to be Bi because I was Ace. That's another form of violation. If you use the wrong pronoun and mislead me about your sex I might develop romantic or sexual feelings based on your personality that I otherwise wouldn't consent to. Consent violations aren't OK.
Even worse is the removal of sex from behaviors that are systemically sexist like what clothing someone wears. In high school I sat in on a protest where the women all dressed in mens suits to protest what we now call "Feminine presentation", a lot of the older guys from the 80s also wore their hair long and wore makeup. I wore jewelry, long hair, and cowboy boots/heels and often was mistaken for a woman from the back.
Yup I got people yelling "Gay" at me out their front door, even more so since I'm very autistic. I got attacked in school until I proved I was tougher than everyone else and then all the girls tried to get with me. Not cool. Do you know what else isn't cool though? Making an old lady uncomfortable in the bathroom because your cultural expectations and hers don't match and not realizing that you BOTH are participating in the same sort of controlling, entitled, and self righteous behavior. Does it really matter if she's uncomfortable or your are? Somebody is uncomfortable, have some compassion.
It's even worse when you are dealing with rape victims with PTSD. I personally deal with severe and complex PTSD and I completely understand that the trigger has nothing PERSONALLY to do with the reaction. A person with PTSD who is reminded of their assault can experience a complete emotional or even physical re-living of the experience. One of the treatments is to remove yourself to a safe space away from the trigger and bring yourself "down" before it gets that bad.
However if you are running to the bathroom and it appears that someone of the opposing sex is following you in that can instantly push someone over the edge. We should treat forcing someone to relive their rape in nearly the same way we treat rape itself. The ultimate solution would be to get rid of sex segregated AND gender based bathrooms but until we do that it's a real problem, and one that the Trans community does not handle with compassion.
Ideally the solution to restrictive gender norms that damage your children and create an environment where the most common form of dysphoria is Gender dysphoria is to reform our ideals of gender. Anything other than having male or female body parts should be removed bit by bit from our gender norms.
I don't care if a man is gay, dresses like a woman, loves to bake, and wishes he could bear a child. Who you are inside has nothing to do with your body parts and should only matter when you are signalling to others information they might need for consenting to an emotional attachment or romantic interest, or when dealing with your doctor. The moment you say that a behavior, feeling, or outlook is male or female I have a word for you: Sexist.
And that is the entire framework the Trans movement has taken. Systemic and righteous sexism. If it looks like a woman, and acts like a woman, it is a woman . . . and when we talk about these other important topics we wind up with people with penetrating organs versus child bearing persons. . . It's an intolerant and harmful way of dealing with the world, and it has to be that way because it is rooted in intolerance, bigotry, and a need to protect ones self with righteous attacks at others rather than being tolerant, having compassion, and talking to them.

      Yeah I've hard that saying.
I heard it a little different "If you're Republican before 30 you have no heart, if you're a Democrat after 30 you have no brain"
Honestly, I think the right-wing likes to perpetuate this idea that people get more conservative as they get older because it affirms their worldview and makes them look good.
It implies that being conservative is the mature and wise thing, and that not being conservative is childish and just something that naive college kids who think they know everything but actually have almost no life experience do, and that once they actually grow up and have jobs and families and responsibilities other than passing a final exam, they'll see that conservatives were right about everything!
That's, of course, bullshit, but you'd see why conservatives like the idea.
It means their views are the "correct" ones, and that the opposition can just be dismissed since they're childish and naive!
However, I mentioned in another comment, I don't even think that the majority of people do become more conservative when they get older. I think most stay as conservative as they ever were. What really illustrated this to me was, actually, the Democratic party. Specifically moderate liberals complaining about how they look forward to when my generation gets older and suddenly gets told that they're not progressive enough!
There's a lot to unpack there, but we'll just go with it demonstrates that political norms change over time.
So what might have been a moderate position when someone was 25, becomes an extreme conservative position by the time they're 75 and if they haven't, as Obama put it, evolved on the issue, they're now "more" conservative on the spectrum eventhough their beliefs about the subject haven't changed in 50 years.

My wife and i spent the first 10 years of our marriage living near the poverty line. We chose to live in low income, working class neighborhoods, and have friends that still do. I now make in the mid 6 figures, and live in a large house surrounded by homes... and I am now more liberal than I once was. I use to be full right centrist democrat, believing in incrementalism. But as my standard of living rises, and I see so many people working harder than myself around me, I move farther and farther to the left. You want me to pay 50% taxes so that the children I use to foster can have food everyday? Take it. You want me to lose large amounts on the value of my home so that others can find a home they can afford? Please, build subsidized homes.
I live in a homogenous neighborhood of wealthy persons, and there are a lot of yards with Warnock and Abrams signs.

My middle class neighborhood is about equally split with Dems and GOP signs in the yards, and as you drive through metro Detroit, the more affluent neighborhoods gets redder and redder. There are a whole lot of people making $150,000 or more who go for Trump. It so happens most of us make less than $80,000
and I personally know plenty of households who even with 2 to 5 different revenue sources still bring in less than $50,000 a year. The poor and working class just out number the rest by far! Even most of the middle and upper class POCs still vote Democrat, but middle class and up Caucasians in this area still lean conservative for the most part.

Very well said, I was raised conservative in the 80's and I'll be honest a lot of my old views, especially back when I was essentially a mouthpiece for the things those older than me taught me, fill me with a sick horror for the most part. If anything has really changed me more than anything, it was exposure to new people and ideas in college, and becoming disabled. The disabled thing really makes you re-evaluate your whole life and your viewpoints because suddenly you need to depend on others and that's a hard thing to do, especially in a country where many want you to "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" ignoring the physical impossibility even if you are healthy.

I grew up in a conservative small town family in New England and held a lot of conservative views on things (immigration, education, social assistance programs, etc) when I was young. When I went to college my perspectives expanded some, but I still held the ‘ you make it on your own merits’ and ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ view of the world overall. It wasn’t until a decade plus into my professional life that I recognized that the station your born into generally has a lot more to do with your future success than the personal effort you put in. It was the 2016 election cycle when I was 35 when I became more politically aware and devoted energy to staying cognizant. Today I’m far more financially fortunate than my family was when growing up and the way I see it is that means I have a greater responsibility to realistically provide at least some of the opportunities I took for granted as a kid to those who weren’t as lucky as me in the birth lottery.
