- This computer I an old XYLO from 2000 and runs Windows 98 Second Edition. The computer currently has an Intel Pentium 3 installed.The version of Microsoft Office installed on it is Microsoft Office 97 Professional. It also has a Tornado V92 56k external dial up modem installed however it is connected to the internet via an ethernet card directly connected with a cable to the router. The web browser that I use on it that supports Windows 98 is Mozilla Firefox 2.5 and somewhat works to browse the web.
Windows 98 is the successor to Windows 95 and the MS-DOS counterpart to Windows NT 4. Windows 98 was the fist version of Windows to introduce active desktop, quick launch and Windows Update. Windows 98 came in two main releases as Windows 98 First Edition in 1998 and Windows 98 Second Edition in 1999. Support for Windows 98 ended in 2006. Windows 98 would be the last version of Windows to have the option to restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.
In my opinion this setup looks better than a modern pc

@@dknight5548 the original doom is still played by alot today, especially becaouse of the mods(brutal doom, project brutality ect)

Personally for me: No matter if it’s a computer from the mid to late 90’s, the 2000’s, the 2010’s (except for Windows 8), and today; they all look charming to me.

Software performance from the 1990s and early 2000s is so much better than than it is today.
And that user interface looks so much nicer than anything from the past ten years.
I’ll tell you more, instead of the advertised Photoshop, I’m using the old Jack Paint Shop Pro 7.0 released August 2000, it works 20 times faster than new versions of Photoshop and the distribution itself weighs about 100MB, basic operations with pictures and graphics were almost instantaneous even on a Pentium 3 1GHz and on Intel i7 4770k and even more so it works even on Windows 7... It’s already 24 years since everything works and you’re right, the old software was most reliable in the 1990s and early 2000s

Certainly, anything algorithmic wont. 20-year-old software couldn't use modern SIMD, let alone high core counts, and processor groups. Probably not even NUMA aware.
But, yes in general, older software was so much more efficient. The problems are terrible programming practices, such as OOP and all the BS that brings, and the use of web-tech in desktop applications.
I remember I met a random person in cafe in 1998. He was prank me that I was from future I was coming from year 2020 he was yelling me that in upcoming years you had phone full of touch screen blah blah and he says Google killed Nokia blah and I said Nokia no never Nokia is legend.
Now I think he actually came from future 🙄
A few years ago, I switched on my old Windows 95 PC again after a long time. I was completely flashed by how quickly the Explorer windows opened. It seemed much faster than under Windows 10.

This reminded of those good old days. I had my first computer with Windows 95 OS. At the same time, it makes me feel surprised on how far we have come in computing world.

1:32 Just days ago, I reinstalled windows 98 on a laptop that I salvaged from junk pile. Windows 98 has its sound card driver build-in and volume is high. That bell sound scared crap out of me. I totally forget that "Welcome" after so many years!
That welcome sound in Windows 98 somehow is louder than Windows XP or Windows 7.

These old computers still worked better than 2020s Laptops.
This was literally our family computer till 2005. The memories u unlocked with this especially that start up sound at 0:30 unlocked way too much memories of my childhood.
My family PC with Windows 98 arrived to our home back in 1998 and it came with PC Engine emulator (with dozens of games). It served us until 2005 when my brother installs XP.
@@r.a.6459 we got our first pc in 2004 with Win98SE. Doom not working, I try to change msdos soundcard configuration and luckily one day it start working. I was so happy that day. :)
Good memories! The start up sounds gives me flashbacks to when i secretly went on the pc when i was a kid in the middle of the night and forgot to turn down the sound boxes haha

damn this brings back some of my earliest memories. I'm 22 (born in 2001) and I'm pretty sure the laptop my mom had when I was really little (2002-2004-ish?) ran Windows 98 and I remember playing my little educational games on that thing.
This is the one that I remember from my childhood growing up in India. Because at this time I was old enough to understand things and it was 1996 to 1997. When most urban homes started having a PC in India.
This brings back childhood memories for me. When I was in preschool, my classroom had a Windows 98 computer, and I would play Reader Rabbit. My cousins used to have a Windows 98 computer, and my former elementary school had a few Windows 98 computers when I was in the 5th grade.

I remember seeing Reader Rabbit as a game option on the Windows 98 desktops my school had over 20 years ago, yet I do not remember playing that game myself. I never owned a real computer with that operating system, but I owned two "hand me downs" (a Packard Bell desktop my parents somewhat used then a Compaq laptop used everyday by my father), both of which ran Windows 95 from the factory. I still follow vintage trends such as this given the good and bad memories I had with it, whether it would be the Windows "Clouds" desktop background or me tinkering around with the school's computers without permission (for example). I vaguely remember what my preschool classroom's PC setup looked like when I was a student. Even in 2006 my school had a Windows 98 desktop (former teacher PC) set up for students to take reading tests, and the following school year there was one set up in the English classroom for students to play games (out of four computers; the other three were an IBM Aptiva desktop with Windows 95 and two all in one Macs from the 90's (pre iMac)).
I still have Windows 98 and reader rabbit…. I played Reader rabbit on my windows 98 since when I was little, that and Just Grandma and me as well as others. I remember playing on Just Grandma and Me in Preschool on the school’s computer running classic Macs and Windows 98.

That's a cool tower desktop PC with Windows 98 on it. To this day, I enjoy using Windows 98 on an actual computer and in virtual machines in Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and Oracle VM VirtualBox since I'm a retro PC kind of guy, although Windows 10 has been my everyday Windows operating system since late 2015. Cool computer demonstration!

I have a computer running Windows 98 from 2000. I didn't expect to find videos like yours on CZcams. I have a number of laptops (this is being typed on a Chromebook). I still cherish my desktop, though

man time went by so fast, i was 10 years old back then. hearing thos sounds again just bring back so maney of the old days. we only had dail up. we only had one computer in the whole house and it was in a room and we called it computer room. all my familys use to take turns useing the computer. now today none of use computers no more. phones took over everyone. last time buyed a new computer was 2010 and when it broke down in 2012 we give up on geting it fixed and just moved on since a lot of us were already useing our phones.
That was my mom's computer. She barely knew how to use it. She made greeting cards and played solitaire.
Those days were nice. We get so curious about new gadgets and softwares.

welcome to 1998 it is no longer 2024 lol if i woke up tommorow and it was that year id go out and buy a windows 7 machine i dont know if it was out that same year but if not id be a kid on christmas day waiting for the release of windows 7

the only operating system on which all games and software worked normally and which was as balanced as possible and had the most affordable system requirements. I also want to note that the old mechanical keyboards cost $10-15 and worked 3-5-10 times longer than modern membrane ones and even better than the expensive Razer ones for $200-300. Old school forever.
I remember opening Notepad as a kid to type random things... and Paint to draw whatever was in my mind. This was in 1998-2000.

Windows 98 even in 2024 is still considered by many as the BEST Microsoft Windows, along with Windows XP.
