His story is very well known even in the west in fact there was a novel by Michael Crichton of Jurassic Park fame called Eaters of the Dead (the movie 13th Warrior was based on the novel) which took heavy inspirations from the true life of Ibn Fadhlan and he even makes him the main character.

That is a complete lie, or just plain ignorance. Nowhere in the Quran are there such rules. On the contrary it instructs muslims to fight and subjugate those who don't believe in Allah and the (false) prophet. The hadiths further reinforce the violent and hateful message of this disastrous book. It's an ideology spread through violent expansion.
