Agreed. I still remember when I first played TTYD. Once I got Bobombast, which if you're a collector/explore the entire map type, is usually pretty soon, or immediately, after Keelhaul Key... I used it damn near every time I could, putting way more levels than was reasonable into FP. I was a kid and it was so damn cool.

In the remake I've opted many times to just run double Flower Saver P, 3 Power Plus Ps on Peril Bobbery, plus Flower Finder, just spamming Bob-ombast for like 17 damage to everything in the Pit lol. Never run out of FP either really cause I get so much back with Flower Finder. There are definitely way more efficient ways to do it but it's really just fun to mash A and watch him explode

One thing with goombella's tattle that maybe makes it worth C Tier
If for some unbeknownst reason you don't want to do damage, but you're also not in danger, Tattle will still give you progress towards getting a bingo, so it's actually more useful than defending in that sorta scenario
Makes it an even better alternative to Appeal, since with a stylish you're getting both decent star power (though not as much) & bingo potential.

@@WindmillPunch There's a lot of changes to characters actually! For exemple Ms Mowz is buffed, her slap does damage like Yoshi's Ground Pound and her heal is cheaper and heals 15HP! There's a couple other changes you can find on a PDF the creator made :>

One thing you definitely glossed over with Mini Egg is that it's the only move that hits more than twice in the game that *doesn't* lower the damage by 1 for each hit beyond the first hit, meaning on a single target it can actually outperform Ground Pound's damage in many scenarios.
Also debuffs.
If think the extra character without the attack orb is probably supposed to be their over world ability.

Interesting thing about Koops: he’s the ONLY partner in the game with natural defense. It doesn’t change a lot about his ranking but it makes him situationally better than people think he is.
Exactly. It is why I use him so much early game. He has a natural 1 defense before guarding, and that says a lot about situational usage

I dunno the exact breakdown of pro vs con between these, but, if 1 defense is situationally nice, being flipped is situationally devastating
I calculated the averages of each character's "score" according to the rankings of their individual moves. Basically, since there are 28 moves, I gave each move a numerical value (28 for the move at the top of S, 1 for the move at the bottom of F) and these are how each character fared:
1st place: Goombella (21 pts)
2nd place: Yoshi (20 pts)
3rd place: Koops (14 pts)
4th place: Flurrie (13.5 pts)
5th place: Vivian (13.25 pts)
6th place: Bobbery (10.25 pts)
7th place: Ms. Mowz (9.75 pts)
Pretty much the same as your initial ranking, although I will say the drop from Yoshi to Koops is a lot steeper than I'd imagined.
Wow, with this there are 3 clear steps. 20+, 14-13 and 10-9. Amazing, situationally great and one niche use.

I once did a full playthrough where I cheated in Ms. Mowz to have her in my party at the beginning, and exclusively used her for the whole game (in battle, anyway). You're right - in the very early game, Love Slap is a pretty decent alternative to Headbonk and Shell Toss. She's easily the best of the three at dealing with Clefts, for example. But she falls off pretty much as soon as you get Flurrie and start upgrading partners, at which point there's very few enemies in the game where Love Slap is the best option. I did actually wind up using Smooch a bunch near the end, because I had a surplus of FP.
How many badges did you grind for?
@@CR1MSONACE none, though I think I got a couple Kiss Thief badges held by enemies early on that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. I think I also got an HP Drain P as a random drop in the late game, not that I’d ever use it lol
I feel like the only thing Ms Mowz brings is the ability to steal items from enemies, otherwise all your other partners are better for combat.
Love that Bobbery, the old geezer, is most useful as a meatshield.

I could be wrong but without using an appeal boosting badges I think goombellas tattle gives more star power with a stylish than the appeal command. This can be helpful since it won’t damage her or the target making it a slightly better way to star power without messing with the hp numbers of the target of you are trying to keep the target at a certain hp range or can’t hit due to being spiky
IIRC Appeal restores more SP than Tattle by default, though I’m not entirely sure how SP restoration works and having a big enough audience or Toads might be enough to make it restore more SP than Appeal. However, if either Mario or his active partner is in Danger or Peril, stylish moves are given a huge boost that makes them restore way more SP than Appeal, so much so that Tattle is better than Headbonk overall in Prologue Pit type challenge runs IMO. That being said, it falls off a lot in the late game, not only because you get more options to damage high Defense enemies but also because you get more SP when you beat each Chapter, making the extra SP from Tattle matter less. It’s pretty hard to accurately rate this IMO, because it’s either really good or really bad.

Having bias in your own list is totally fair. Yoshi is my favorite video game character, but I love Vivian in this game since she's so well written for a Mario character, and I always use her when I play this game even though I know other strategies would be better. Bow was my favorite in the first Paper Mario so I guess the series did a good job of making me like ghosts. (Or at least ghostlike entities.)

Alright hold on, Flurrie i never used her until i tried her in the pit of 100 trials with FP reducers, and flower finder, and you literally can just blow all the enemies away in the 2nd half of the pit of 100 trials which are near the strongest enemies in the game. To add on to this, when I was casually doing a pre chapter 4 I found that flurrie can just outlive whatever Bonetail throws out without doing any grindy badge stacking (power rushes) just use like lip lock on spam and sweet treat with Flurrie in front and Mario in the back and both of them will NEVER die. To note I did do this in the remake and not the original but I found tons of niche use out of her lol
i have a challenge that might be fun to try, you can only use things found in the chapter to complete the chapter, you can only use the partner of the chapter, badges and items found in the chapter and anything that can be obtained at any time has to be 'assigned' to a chapter, meaning you can use danger mario strats, but only for one chapter, cause it would be silly otherwise
4:30 Mini egg is so fun to use against bosses that it works on and does great damage, i dont see why its whatever 😔

They should buff Ms.Mowz’s love slap so it hits multiple times like Bow from paper Mario 64
In the remake, it "hits" multiple times, but only the last slap does damage. I only know this because of the secret boss that was added.

Flurrie is once again underrated as a tank. She's the absolute best in defensive builds. Plus, Dodgy Fog + the lucky badges = Mario is pretty much invincible.
Because it's incredibly unnecessary. Defensive builds are pointless when there are so many good offense builds. Whats the point in making Mario invincible when you can specc him to end every single battle before enemies get a turn?
@@BlaizeTheDragon Both can be useful. Some may not be too good with action commands or able to super guard well.
@@BlaizeTheDragon in that case the only partner that matters is goombella since she can make mario go twice per turn.
She can't be a true "tank" because there's no way to ensure that an enemy chooses to hit her. Putting her in front can help, sure, but a lot of the time their selection seems arbitrary. And it doesn't matter at all with endgame enemies that have AOE attacks.
Doggy fog on mario with some dodge Badges makes it so even if they target mario it won't matter
I do actually quite like shell shield. I recently did a 5 health danger Mario challenge (inspired by your videos!) and when one missed super guard means death, having a barrier is extremely useful. Not to mention that if you DO hit the superguard, the shell doesn't take damage, so it's great insurance.
Shell shield is fun for early game charge Mario. I typically use it to cheese Grodus in the Boggly tree. 5 turns of charging while hidden in a shell before finishing with a power bounce is entertaining. Mario never gets hurt.
That's the thing, partner and badge effectiveness greatly depends on what kind of challenge run you're doing. I personally like doing no items, so stuff like happy heart/flower, pity flower, FP drain, etc is nice to me.
That’s good to know. I’ll give that a shot. I remember shell shield helping me a little against Rawk Hawk (I had quick change so I wasn’t using Koops the whole fight).
I would have ranked mowz above flurrie since thief can be pretty useful for getting extra badges, and also her ability outside of battle is basically essential for getting 100% completion.
I always found that Ms mowz at least has her own niche use whereas flurrie has nothing that other party members can't do but better (her tanky nature is useless due to how easy it is to wipe enemies before they have a turn). Not to mention ms. Mowz stealing items becomes a godsend in late pit of 100 trials.
Personally in the remake I'd like to see her being able to steal coins (amount scales with enemy type) to give it extra flexibility when enemies don't have any items/badges to steal.
@@BlaizeTheDragon Kiss Thief actually steals random items and badges from the enemy's drop table even if they have no held item. If you roll nothing you get 1 coin instead.

Mini egg is a better Multibonk:
Costs the same FP as Multibonk,
Applies Shrink status most of the time,
Doesn't lower your attack power by 1 with egg (as far as i remember),
Hits anywhere, anyone,
Scales incredibly with damage upgrades (with one Power Plus it goes from 4 to 8 damage).
Everything i just said might be misremembered, because i havent played this game myself in a long time, so point it out please.
Mini Egg targets enemies randomly so it's not as reliable as multibonk.

So basically the one utility Ms Mowz has is guaranteeing any badges you find on enemies in battle, especially if two enemies have badges and you want both.
Bobbery and Vivian are my favorite character/design wise.
I would also agree with most of the list but I also would say that with Bobbery, besides the queen fight, can use bomb squad on Cortez on the stage where he is weaker when he shows his chest jewel you can immediately get him to show his chest so you have an even easier time defeating him. Bobbery’s moves are niche, but can help things move along. I feel that move can move up a set at least because it’s use in speed runs. Otherwise, great tier list!
I love how Tattle not only has use in casual play but has niche uses for challenge runners as well. Specifically allowing SP to be regained after Sweet Treat is used to basically make the move free and activating bingos during the Bonetail battle. It also has one of the easiest stylishes to hit in the game since you just mash A after executing the move which is nice for a move meant to be used by first time players.
You made me want to play this game and experiment with the different set ups! Cant wait for the remake
Lip Lock on Flurrie is really nice early game. It goes past enemy defense
I love how Bringle was like "My rating for Kiss Thief is going to be controversial" and then put it exactly where I would've put it. I was thinking "Yeah, not a super amazing move, but it's by far Ms. Mowz's best move and actually has some good uses if you wanna disarm an enemy or steal their item for yourself. No other partner can do that, and it's genuinely a useful ability to have, even if her other moves all suck.".
Like Kiss Thief is a bad *attack* since it's not one. But it IS a good move since it has a useful ability that you can't get anywhere else. If this were a tier list of damage, yeah it'd score terribly, but in terms of abilities and how useful they are, Kiss Thief is definitely up there for it's utility.

This was a super fun video! I really appreciate that the casual side of things was also taken into account. It would have been a fun extra 5 minutes or so to rank their field abilities too :p Super excited for the remake! Less than 2 weeks away!

Yeah, 5 max health difference is meaningless when Flurrie can heal a bunch of HP with each lip lock.
This is literally my favorite game of all time and I had no idea Flurrie was a cloud this WHOLE TIME until you said it. I genuinely thought she was a ghost my whole life lmao
Flurrie with Lip Lock was the only partner move that helped me get through the bonetail fight with the badges I had and the star power available to me. It was right after chapter four.

I love the idea of being "impartial" but also giving leway to characters you have a biased to and being more strict on ones you don't.
Next challenge run you should do a hammer only play through. I recently did one and it was surprisingly fun! Especially if you stack a few power smashes and use charge, mario can do some DAMAGE.
I like it if only for fire drive, it's a satisfying move. Also doing several flips after power smash.

I think one of the things you forgot to mention on the first half was the field abilities, Yoshi is even more of an MVP for allowing you to traverse the world faster

I like how in Japan Rally Wink is actually Support Kiss. It really shows Goombella how much she cares for Mario. She alongside Yoshi Kid and Ms Mowz are my favourite character wise.

I agree with this list for the most part, but I think you did Flurrie dirty! She’s an absolute tank and her skills are pretty good all-around. I’d say she’s got more going on than Koops at least! (I don’t dislike Koops, but it sucks that his attacks can only damage enemies on the ground…)
I'd argue flurrie is a better tank than bobbery due to lip lock doing piercing and life steal damage
shell shield > veil any day. you dont waste a complete turn and it actually stays for more turns (especially if you hot super guards).
also it is good on "danger builds" (exceptional for those who arent that much confident that can survive with 5hp mario by continoously super guarding).
also, for defense builds, dodgy fog on mario with all the dodge badges and flurrie using lip lock to get huge hp back every turn are very viable. you can defeat bonetail like this by outsustaining him.
but overall, great video and i get where your opinion is coming from. i agree to all the rest and most of all i hate veil (but love vivian)

Goombella is S tier for me. I played most of the time with her. And her rally wink is so overpowered. You can use two Mario attacks and this is fantastic. And I love her multibonk together with charge or other attack buffs. Her story is ok but it goes better.
Koops is B tier for me. Until you have vivian he is good for multi-targets but I prefer Vivian‘s fiery jinks. In hooktail‘s Castle he is useful but After that I used him Not that often. His story is also only ok. Because he want to grow up.
Flurrie is D tier for me. I used her only when you have to blow something away but in battles I used her 2 or 3 times. If i have to block an attack or in the battle with Bonetail to get her buff for Mario. Her story is nothing special but it is cool that she returned back to the spotlight After the adventure.
The Yoshi is S tier for me. His attacks a very good except for enemies with 1 defense or more. His gulp is very good for enemies to break their defense and with charge or other attack buffs he is so powerful. His story is cute and I like that he wants to be a champion in glitzpit like mario.
Vivian is A tier for me. I Iove her fiery jinks and her shade fist and the fire effect is almost always guaranteed. Her veil is not that good as outta sight from Lady Bow because veil is so strange. When Mario attacks and after that you veil the enemy can attack twice but I‘m sure you know that. Her story is also wonderful and she switched the sites because she was bullied by Beldam.
Bobbery is A tier for me. His bomb attacks are good but his power bomb is very expensive and his other moves are not that good and I never used them. His story is the best of all from Mario‘s partners and I love his whole story sections on chapter 5.
Ms. Mowz is D tier for me but better than flurrie. I used her only if the enemy is carrying an item that I want to own. Or on the moon because she bypasses the defense of the enemies. Her story isn‘t special but she is better than flurrie in my opinion.
That was a cool idea to rank the partners and their moves.
Baby Yoshi's stampede is very powerful, especially if you keep adding "Charge" to it. Trust me, I've done it SEVERAL times.
While I don't want to make this solely focused on combat, as I do like how your rank the partners in a vacuum rather than just combat. For instance, I LOVE Goombella, I love how she's allowed to be a bit of a smartass, yet still friendly and helpful. I really do miss when female characters have sass to them and weren't just overtly motherly or nice. But I also feel you downplayed Flurrie a bit. I won't say she's great or anything, but Gale Force and Lip Lock are good utility moves that easily provide her more use than Vivian or Bobbery. While I completely understand the cheese in just deleting enemies, at the same time that is what makes Gale Force so good, especially in certain pit runs it can come in super clutch and the miss chance I'd argue doesn't matter much when you can just run. And what makes me rank her above Vivian is I feel people don't really acknowledge how many things Vivian just can't hit with Shade Fist or Fiery Jinx. And it's quite a bit, and those enemies Vivian can't hit Flurrie can. Unless you factor in things like Shadow Queen, or certain low level runs I feel the utility you get from Gale Force will outweigh the utility from Vivian a lot of the time.
GF also gives Star Points, gets rid of fog (even though it doesn't have barring on combat) and I feel out of all RNG options, its risk reward feels the most serviceable, as your reward is worth the luck, as opposed to something like Lucky badges or luck overall which just amounts to a gamble. Lip Lock also just turns Flurrie into a mad tank against the dragons and Magnus. I find this move makes her more useful as a tank than Bobbery. I also feel you massively underrated Shell Shield. It's really good! Again, I don't want to sound pedantic, as I get the criteria of your measurement here, honestly if we're going by overall perspective your list is a lot of fun. I just thought I'd provide my own perspective. I overall enjoyed the list! :D
As a side note, Mowz also deserves flak for Love Slap not only dealing pitiful damage but causes the audience to boo and gives less star power than any other move, and you have to stylish just to get them to like the move, it also has hammer range so its front locked, is affected by contact. and Tease is the worst attack in the game, its literally just worse Dodgy Fog and Infatuate. lol

I'd say Dodgy Fog is actually a good move. from what I see you will dodge an average of 3 attacks for its one use. Assuming you don't super guard those attacks. But if you hit every super guard then barely anything is a threat anyways.
One of my favorite uses for yoshi’s mini egg is during the raw hawk fight if you use it while he’s holding the ceiling he will shrink,, fall and lose access to that attack. which to me is comical and useful because Ive always found the ceiling shake attack annoying
I put Rawk Hawk to sleep and never saw any of his attacks.
Bobbery may not be optimal, but nothing will stop my love for sailor hats helms and explosives.
kiss thief in low A is crazy, I understand your reasoning but I can't really agree with it, stuff worth stealing shows up much too infrequently to get much use out of it, like maybe in the deep pits you'll see some really good badges or that stopwatch scenario you mentioned but aside from that, I can't really think of any scenarios where I thought "I should switch to mowz to steal what that enemy has", at least in an unmodded ttyd, which I assume this list was made for
You DO know you can steal even if the enemy has no item?
If an enemy has no item It gives you items based on their hold rate (you get the coin if you hit nothing )
you can farm any koopa for as many power rushes as you want, get infinite close calls from goombas, find a spania and get as many pretty luckies as you please, defend pluses from chain chomps, power pluses from dark wizzerds , you just have to fond the enemy and farm their drop table as long as you want without ever having to reset the battle items by entering a different area

This video was interesting to me because I don't really think about a partner not being valuable since I always use quick change. In my last playthrough I was very attack heavy and I used Ms. Mowz to one shot a chain chomp cause she could do 7 piercing damage. I laughed when you put her in F tier cause I initially wanted to defend her but realized that I literally only used her against one enemy lol
Mowz best use is to steal badges from enemies

Mood. Last time I tried to play through TTYD (I'll beat the game one day, probably with the remake lol) I basically just used Vivian in every single battle after I unlocked her unless I needed to switch off of her. She's my favorite Paper Mario character in general. I'm also *definitely* not biased as a trans woman myself haha... 😅
@@MarioMamTessit's a bit of cruel shame that the next area has too many battles that counters Vivian thanks to buzzy beetles/spike tops and of course the blue/red lava bubbles.
There's some mechanics in this game that I feel like I definitely overlooked when playing the game. Especially as a kid. Knowing Vivian can hit pretty much anyone (not Bristles) with shade fist means that enemies like spiky parabuzzies can be a little less annoying. Although, at the same time, by the time you get Vivian, you can just get the Spike Shield badge and it won't be a problem anyways. Lol. Hopefully, I'll remember some of these things for when the remake comes out.
I like how the devs knew everyone would love Vivian so they gave her a move that takes advantage of her ability to make people fall in love with her. Even if that move isn’t very useful.

Bomb Squad is the funniest move in the game in my opinion. I love chaining two together and watching them all blow up at once
So, one thing I think you underrated about Mowz is that she does damage that ignores defense *for free*. Her basic attack goes through defense without costing FP. I absolutely would never have made it through my first run of the Pit without her (granted I wasn't playing optimally since I was still young in my understanding of the game). Still, free true damage is free true damage and I think you undersold that.
So what I took from this video is that an ultralong single battle (say like, 100,120 straight enemies) would shake this tier list inmediately.
I never even knew dodgy fog existed before this video. You know it's bad when a casual who thought hammer was better than jump doesn't know the move exists.
Man, ms. Mowz dismissal will never stop hurting. Especially since you say you also consider personality etc. She's such a fun character that way. I'm at least glad you put kiss thief so high. If this was a pure be as tactical as possible in combat tier list it would be a bad move. But as you say, if it's just playing the game and having fun with it is phenomenal. I do disagree with her base attack though. You can buff it with badges, it doesn't cost any FP, it's fun to use, it has a great animation and there are definitely times where it's objectively the best choice. Yes, some moves might do more damage. But if her damage is enough to kill, who cares? Especially since the other option will cost FP and relies on missable action commands. If an enemy has enough defense that it requires 4 or 5 bonks from Goombella for example, I should make that. But sometimes I just don't. But it's impossible for me to not make Ms. Mowz her action command if I go for it. She's a definite C for me.
Other than that I don't think I would do my list differently, except I wouldn't have any character in F. Because all characters have at least some use.

I think she's commonly overrated because of her low skill floor; she has probably the most generous set of viable targets for her base attack, doesn't lose any damage off failing the action command, and Veil FEELS really good when you dodge an obviously telegraphed super attack and don't know what else you can do. If you're newer to the game, Vivian is hard to use wrong. If you're undervaluing Quick Change, she's probably the least likely partner to be in a situation where she gets outright forced out because she can't do anything.
Once you get better at the game, the advantages Vivian offers kind of blend into the background. Keeping damage on a failed action command doesn't matter, because you're hitting your action commands. Partners aren't getting into situations where they're getting forced out because either Quick Change is glued to you, or you know in advance the areas and scenarios that are uncomfortable to certain partners, and are just avoiding them.
Having a very flexible basic attack matters less because you're more likely to be using the correct specialist.
Veil matters less because you are either superguarding those, or dealing so much damage that losing the action to dodge the attack is actually a net loss.
And in exchange, Vivian... kinda doesn't do anything that a more advanced player wants, that another partner doesn't do better.
The best she does is occasionally the damage from burn matters to some plan, so she gets tagged in to apply it.
Hear me out. Flurry slam is free, does 5 dmg AND hit's ceiling enemies, Koops has to 4 FP just to do 6 dmg to grounded enemies only.
I decided to have a little fun and see if your partner ranking corresponds with the moveset ranking. I gave points for each tier a move is on and divided it by 4 to get the mean. S tier would get 6 points, A tier 5, etc.
Here are the totals I got.
Goombella: 4.75
Koops: 3.25
Flurry: 3.5
Yoshi: 4.75
Vivian: 3.25
Bobbery: 2.5
Mowz: 2.5
What I find funny is that Flurry is ranked second to last on her own, but when you look at her mean from the moveset totals she is literally third behind Ms. Mowz and Bobbery. I decided to not try to fit these totals back on the tier list since by this method you'd have to have all your moves in S either or F to qualify for rankings in those tiers. This was all in fun to see how the partners rankat first versus their moveset.

Crazy how I was a hammer guy and so I preferred bomber and used peekaboo instead of goombrella😅 so my mains were yoshi and explosive tank especially higher levels mainly because of the def penetration and consumed hella FP since I’d spam gulp and bombers ultimate so I’d make sure to have enough FP items to clear levels fast 😅😂 fun asf for me to nuke the entire enemies with 9+ dmg

Whoever designed Admiral Bobbery hated him and Powerlift. Hold Fast gets worse with defense and blocking with even attacks that you’d expect him to counter like enemies running into him with spear counting as a ranged attack. His only multi hitting attack Bomb Squad seems to be unaffected by attack buffs and doesn’t pierce or do big damage probably relying on the soft status for certain enemies. Bombomb bast is too expensive and it will feel like a waste of fp or too little to get rid of a line of threats worthy of the cost.
