  • The key to organizational effectiveness - even survival - is that improvement happens project-by-project, and in no other way. What many healthcare organizations struggle to understand is that the long term success of their strategic efforts requires more than supplying project teams with a cursory knowledge of the quality improvement process. Lean and Six Sigma combined are two excellent methods for solving the intricate problems in the healthcare industry and to tactically plan for success.
The ultimate goal of Lean is to provide perfect value to the customer through a perfect value-creation process that has zero waste. “Value” is anything the customer would be willing to pay for, and “waste” is anything the customer would not be willing to pay for. The essence of Lean is that any resources expended for any goal other than the creation of value for the end consumer is wasteful - and, thus, should be eliminated.
Six Sigma also encourages healthcare organizations to pursue continuous value creation, but the focus is not on removing waste; rather, Six Sigma uses statistical and quality management methods to identify errors and minimize variability in processes. Combined, Lean Six Sigma can be a powerful catalyst for reducing costs and increasing quality - if deployed correctly.
