Marian McLaughlin: NPR Tiny Desk Concert

- Marian McLaughlin is a unique musician based in the Washington/Baltimore area, and because she's lived in D.C., I've had a chance to watch her grow. She's an artist on her own path, making music like few others.
The closest comparisons might be Joanna Newsom or Diane Cluck, both of whom I admire; both are of their own place and time, and the music they make connects on a personal level. Listening feels as if you've entered their meticulously decorated living rooms. And so it is for Marian McLaughlin, with her quirky and wistful style of singing - and her unusual nylon-string guitar playing, which balances staccato and spacious sounds.
When I saw McLaughlin perform with a string quartet, I felt compelled to bring her to the Tiny Desk. Ethan Foote, the fellow on the upright bass, did the arrangements; Geoff Manyin is on cello and Nick Montopoli, on violin, is from the group Invoke. The strings add considerable atmosphere to McLaughlin's music; you can hear it especially in the opening song about Otto Lilienthal, a German mechanical engineer who was a precursor to the Wright Brothers. These three songs are from McLaughlin's self-released record on Bandcamp, titled "Dérive." --BOB BOILEN

All these songs need to be at least 3 times longer!!! :o
I really like this, it's got a real old fashioned english folk feel to it.
I love everything about this. Beautiful music.
I was only scrolling down to click on smt else and stop my ears from bleeding. But the comments on this one have me rolling about in fits. And I'm at work. Nought to add.
Whether or not this is your cup of tea, there is no doubt that the ensemble is both gifted and with diligent musicians. I am very fond of Ethan Foote's work, and these string arrangements are no exception.
It is the best I've heard for years
Brilliant! and you rock to boot...
I like it. It's haunting and eerie, but lovely too. Thank you!
Great..beautiful.. Wish I was there...
Love the strings
Makes me think of a bard -- very enjoyable!
Seeing the amount of negative comments, i think i'll state why i think their work and the string arrangement are brilliant.
1. Perfect discretion of upbeat until the first on beat starts.
2. Good control and stresses on on beats.
3. Fantastic and beautiful harmony.
4. Good amount of 'question' and 'answer' phrases.
5. Gives off beautiful renaissance or early baroque period theme similar to John Dowland.
6. Decent amount of effort over the guitar work.
Thank you for my morning laugh. Your misunderstanding of music is quite comical.
You are very welcome sir, your 'understanding' of music is very amusing.
Jong Choong Shyr Well then, we have both had a good laugh. What better way to start the day!
Jong Choong Shyr And i like your army helmet too, cool look.

Interesting concept. Love the strings and her voice. But it's not really there yet.
KEEP WORKING!
not gonna lie, the beginning, without the visuals, kinda scared me.
couldn't follow lyrics at all
They really should have had a close up mic on her. The lyrics are brilliant, check out the band camp.
i agree but sure ill check it out ;p
2nd
Almost acoustic Jeff Buckley-ish
umm.....I'll pass on this
That's certainly a lot of dissonant sound
Awesome compositional work! Great job! It would almost be just as great without the singing and just became purely instrumental.
God, this is terrible. Reminds me a little of the old beat days, before the hippies, and just about as bad. This must be a revival of that slop....history repeating itself.
This is what happens when an attention seeking hipster uses a lot of heroin.
