    Important note on Point #1- PT only records in the background when punch record (“P” in the record button in transport) is activated. Otherwise, you cannot just press record and it does not save everything before the punch

    If Ableton Live added: Playlist/Comping, Mix/Edit Groups and Background Audio Recording, it would be so much more competitive. I also use Pro Tools for vocal production, and although I like using it, I'd rather keep it all in Ableton.

    Honestly I’ve never really had any issues with vocal production in ableton. I normally bounce my instrumentals into another project and then do my vocals and ableton allows me to be more experimental with my vocal production. I think pro tools required a lot of plug ins in order to get the job done. Ableton packs a punch with their stock plug ins. It might not be the best for vocal production because it’s a little tedious but it’s not impossible or unbearable

    I was told over and over that ableton was better than pro tools so I really gave it a shot but I always found myself returning to pro tools because it’s more intuitive and familiar to use. It like the parent’s house of DAWs if that makes sine. I’ll say this though, using ableton as a virtual instrument in pro tools is the winning combo. Best of both worlds.

    One of the things I like most versus Live is that return tracks (or in this case AUX tracks) aren't stuck to the end of the session, they can be reordered and you can send pre-fader on a per track basis.
    Biggest bummer in PT is the sidechain paths aren't delay compensated which makes a lot of contemporary mixing techniques impractical.

      I'm a Reaper user as well, and I think it's pricing is very sensible. But what most people omit is that you can't do serious work with Reaper without getting additional software. Reaper is an excellent host and environment for audio production, but its stock plugins and lack of software instruments makes it just that. I like it that way, but it should be pointed out whenever direct price comparisons between DAWs are made.

    this is why i switched to Studio One 4 for Recording & Mixing as well. And to my surprise, Studio One 4 has all of these features that ProTools has as well. I would say the Comping is actually more efficient and better in Studio One. scrolling through takes using your mouse wheel is a game changer. The people that i work with in the studio always get wowed when i scroll through their takes using the wheel. Also Vocalign works on Studio one and we have our own Audio suite, It's called Event FX and in my opinion it works more efficiently than ProTools as well because we can reverse whatever we rendered out. Yo can someone tell me if those plugins you showed were all stock? I'm so sold every single thing you said was a problem I've been spending hours on FL Studio not being able to do. You literally quantize a clip in a second, had a tape stop affect but perfectly which I literally spent days perfecting on a song. I'm so happy cuz I can still use FL for production but now pro tools for recording vocals & samples.

    For those ableton users that want to use ProTools for THESE REASONS, Pro Tools First, which is a free version, you can have Reid´s reasons: 1, 3, 5 and 6. Unfortunately you do not have reason 2 (Various takes) and 4 (plugins he mentioned). But 4 out of 6 is already GREAT and I am already using it for vocal recording.

    Saying you switched is kind of click bait. It's not like you're not using Live anymore. For real, Live lacks in mixing/recording/comping and in some ways midi. I use Reason and Live. Considering Cubase actually, it's strong where those two are weak and vice versa. Good on you for finding a workflow that works. You're a smart dude and your videos are amazing.

    so when you produce a beat in ableton, do you just 'export all tracks' from ableton to pro tools when you want to record vocals and mix the song? Or what is your process in regards to that?

    • @ReidStefanMusic
      @ReidStefanMusic  Před 5 lety +2

      I export my beat from Ableton with no master chain, so i can master the song within the pro tools session with vocals. If i need to adjust the beat, I open re-Ableton and re-bounce a new instrumental for the pro tools session.

      I’m exactly the same. Was so glad to leave pro tools behind. I do wish Ableton had a feature when you were done with production it would bounce down all to audio files and let you do a clean mix down with a more traditional style like Pro Toools or Studio One. Mixing in Ableton is.....less than ideal to me but not worth dealing with Pro Tools again lol
