This album followed by Rattle'nHum was U2 at the peak of their brilliance. I feel blessed to have had the ears and heart to receive their musical gift with open arms 🙏💖🎶
Without question. Just go to Wikipedia and read up on the album. It won best album of the year and is now on more top 100 albums of all time lists than you can count. While its completely subjective, you will find that most people agree with this sentiment. I know I certainly do. Not only do I put it in the top 100 albums of all time, I actually put it in the top 25 albums of all time and maybe even the top 10 albums of all time, although I would have to give it more thought before I ranked it that high. Either way, its an absolutely brilliant album and will definitely go down in history as one of the best albums of all time, at least according to the masses.
I STILL HAVE JOSHUA TREE ON CASSETTE ! I NEVER REGRET BUYING THAT ALBUM AND ESPECIALLY LOVE TRIP THROUGH YOUR WIRES AND RUNNING TO STAND STILL! YESSSS BEST ALBUM EVER!
I periodically forget about this song and then rediscover it and am once more amazed by its power, depth, and resonance. I am truly in awe of it, and incredibly grateful to be in a world where it exists.
Heard this song for the first time a while back and was "gifted" with its words when I could not find my own. I listened to it over and over while going through a seemingly unbearable experience -- and eventually it guided me back to my own words....my own voice....my own truth ....back to my own Self. And while truth is often ugly and painful to reveal, it is indeed essential for setting a person free. My eternal thanks for the gift of this song, this band. To borrow from the title of one of their others...."Your Song Saved My Life" in a fundamental way -- it allowed me to "scream" my rage and truth out loud to those who needed to hear it -- but certainly did not want to be confronted by it. I write this with the hope that it might in some way at some time be helpful to anyone who is struggling to speak/scream out loud their own truth ~ Namaste
I’m trying patiently and lovingly to wait for my 27 year old son to SCREAM his truth. It’s been a battle since he was 15. I love him, that will never end!!❤❤
This song speaks to me on so many levels and brings back my memories of when I was very actively addicted to heroin in the 1990s. I was fortunate enough to recover and have been clean since March, 2000- but I think of the others, the ones who still suffer, when I listen to this song and I hope for them that if they don't make it all the way to sobriety (heroin addiction has the lowest successful clean rate statistically) then at the very least I hope they live in an area where the public service recognises it for the medical problem it is, and treat it accordingly. It's not a moral issue belonging in a Victorian mentality.
bless you. im an addict now for 10 years... started with cough medicine then any pill i could get. now i suffer the needle chill somethjng i thoughht i wouldnt dream of doingvwhen i was 20.. now it comsunes me and the fear of needles lonnnnng gone
Seven towers was an area of blocks of flats were they grew up in Ireland that was full of addicts That's why she's running to stand still and suffer the needle chill is about cold turkey withdrawal
Saw this song played during the Joshua Tree tour. Fell in love with the random girl next to me when she said “This song means so much to me” then soulfully sang along with the the band. Hope she is alive and doing well.
teech16 recovering addict sending you love & hope... I came back for & to my loved ones & from the bottom of my heart, I hope your daughter manages the same. I had no idea how much my mum missed me, I stupidly believed things were fine because we were still in contact, but I now know it was my essence she missed, all the special little things that make me, me. After a short time clean, I came back in all my glory, but while I was still using the poison, I trully believed I was gone for good & had no-one telling me(understandably, they couldnt see me anymore) but please tell your daughter, "No matter what the drug or her associates tell her, she is still there & she is worth the fight... My heart breaks for all mums who are having to deal with this. If it would help, you can contact me anytime or have your daughter talk with me.... My best wishes to you & yours. Sheona.
teech16 So sad to here of your loss, very powerful and beautiful song, hope it brings comfort to you and anyone else who have lost loved ones to this Evil Drug, God Bless you may she R.I.P.
My deepest condolences. I have a few family members on that same oblivion's edge, so I've got a glimpse of your pain. I hope you find the peace you deserve, and you can turn to those you can lean on.
Seeing this song played live was one of my best U2 experiences. So powerful! And at the last moment of the song, when Bono pulls out his harmonica and finishes off the song sent goose bumps all over! Perfection!
Anyone who has been through or understands the horror of addiction will know how powerful and true these lyrics are. Bono hit the nail right on the head when he wrote them.
So, so haunting. It's so powerfully emotive that it doesn't just take me back to my early twenties, it places me back there with all the emotions of the time. Magical. Maybe not what's intended from the lyrics no, but it is a demonstration of the power of music.
Wasn't even alive when this song came out, but yes, something about the music and something about the song, meaning aside, is sad. I can't describe it. It is powerfully emotive.
This song, among all the songs i know after 48 years stays with me in my head, and comes to me from time to time when i need solice. its like my woman. beautiful!!
She brings me white golden pearls... Stolen from the Sea she is ragin'... She is ragin' and the storm blows up in her eyes... She will, suffer the needle chill... She's running to stand still. (WOW) I DON'T HAVE THE WORDS FOR IT... IT'S OK... U-2 DOES.!!!.
I grew up on U2 and I always loved this song, the beautiful pain in his voice. I'm 35 now and have multiple yrs off heroin. now I understand where the pain came from.
Their original sound was more rebellious. It was The Unforgettable Fire when they changed to their next phase/sound. Achtung Baby is when they became more musically inclined and more progressive. The 90's sound, or 90's drop-off as that decade just ruined music, would be more evident on Zooropa and Pop as both albums weren't nearly as strong beginning to end. Their 2000's sound was really good and both releases in 2000 and 2004 showed how good they got at their abilities to create very good songs with unpredictable changes and sounds as well as being somewhat commercial but still unique. No Line on the Horizon took a bit of a different turn as that album wasn't one loaded with ballads, not one for the girls, and not so commercial. And then Songs of Innocence, just when we thought all their songs could end up sounding the same, they just don't! They're an awesome Rock band with a variety of sounds, great chord progressions, great beats. I love their music. I just wish Bono would stay the f..k out of American politics! The Edge is easily one the best rhythm guitarists in Rock history. There aren't many constants in life. Rush and U2 have always been there though.
"this was there last album were they stuck to their original sound ..after that they changed into more 90s sound" I disagree. I think Rattle & Hum still had a LOT of that 80's U2 feel and sound. IMO, it was with Achtung Baby where they really took a serious departure from that classic 80's U2 sound. And as much as I LOVE the 80's U2 sound, I actually wound up really enjoying Achtung Baby. It was one of the biggest departures in style I have ever seen a band make from 1 album to the next (Rattle & Hum to Achtung Baby). They were all experimenting with an entirely different sound with Achtung Baby. It was really the last album by U2 that I could listen too straight through. They have still created some great music since then, but they were never at the level they were at during the 80's are very early 90's ever again.
This song is about being a dopefiend, of which I was one for 16 years before I got clean. I never used a needle tho' thank God. I was a pillhead. Same addiction, less chance of a ton of physical illnesses is you don't i.v. dope tho'. Great song!
Congratulations on overcoming such a disastrous thing. I witnessed my friend go through hell while she was withdrawing from heroin so i saw with my own eyes how hard opiate addiction can be.
Such a great song. I loved, LOVED U2, right up until after Achtung Baby, when they went a little too pop for my taste. Fortunately, I'm free to listen to all of their best old stuff, whenever I want.
Exactlly. All i can do is agree. When i first heard this song i had no idea it was about heroin and addiction. Didnt do drugs on that level... and now 20 yrs later mim an addict thx to my doctor
A few days off it again after 12 years of addiction. Getting too old for this shit but heroin tends to decide how what's left of your live will pan out
And so she woke up Woke up from where she was Lying still Said I gotta do something About where we're going Step on a steam train Step out of the driving rain, maybe Run from the darkness in the night Singing ha, ah la la la de day Ah da da da de day Ah la la de day Sweet the sin Bitter the taste in my mouth I see seven towers But I only see one way out You got to cry without weeping Talk without speaking Scream without raising your voice You know I took the poison From the poison stream Then I floated out of here Singing ha la la la de day Ha la la la de day Ha la la de day She runs through the streets With eyes painted red Under a black belly of cloud in the rain In through a doorway she brings me White gold and pearls stolen from the sea She is raging She is raging And the storm blows up in her eyes She will Suffer the needle chill She's running to stand Still.

Wow that is crazy! I never knew that about the towers! I lived in Dublin for a year while in university but was on the south side in Rathmines. Then I moved up North Side for the summer but was still in the city centre basically near Phoenix Park.
Pardon my ignorance but I just read that they have demolished those towers? I lived in Dublin for a year but, wow, that was 20 years ago so the city has changed just a wee bit!! 😄

Unforgettable fire--josua tree--rattle and hum--achtung baby
Bono is an incredible song-writer. No doubt about it. Incredible album, overall
Joshua Tree, probably one of the best albums ever produced.

One of my favorite songs ever written! So powerful! Gives me chills every time I hear it!
Me too; special song from a very special band.
Seven towers was an area of blocks of flats were they grew up in Ireland that was full of addicts
That's why she's running to stand still and suffer the needle chill is about cold turkey withdrawal

Just one of U2's greatest songs!
You gotta cry without weeping, Talk without speaking, Scream without raising your voice.................

Staceylane74
Tried em all and they don't work!
Staceylane74 linda canção. Muito linda . Desde adolescente ouço
One of the most poignant and melancholy songs about addiction ever.
Bono does an amazing job of putting himself in someone else's shoes in this song.
I was in the wrath of addiction for 20nyears im clean 13 years now so this song I know beautiful song about the darkness drugs pull you into
sweet dark melancholy
The Joshua Tree is most definitely one of the best albums ever made
Here here I totally agree x
Yeah! One of best forever
Wow, I remember having the cassette tape in my car and played this over and over. Beautiful music. Music is timeless.
Song popped in my head today after years.
Makes me glad CZcams exists
So very sad yet very beautiful. A song for my beautiful daughter, lost her way and then her life to heroin.
teech16 recovering addict sending you love & hope... I came back for & to my loved ones & from the bottom of my heart, I hope your daughter manages the same. +Sheona Ridley dont think you read her post correctly ....she said her daughter lost her life to the drug...may she rest in peace
OH, I'm so, so sorry.
Seeing this song played live was one of my best U2 experiences. So powerful! And at the last moment of the song, when Bono pulls out his harmonica and finishes off the song sent goose bumps all over! Perfection!
One of my favorite U2 songs.
I'm now 70 and have just heard this song- Ive wasted a lot of time not playing this over and over again...U2 are unbelievable
"Scream without raising your voice" ...always sends those supercharged prickly feels down my spine
One of the best lines I ever heard to describe heroin addiction. Running to stand still.
It's the latter tracks (side B of the vinyl) on this iconic album that are actually the best for me
Anyone who has been through or understands the horror of addiction will know how powerful and true these lyrics are.
Same😊
You could have not more truer words. Only "With or Without You" fuels more great and meaningful memories.
Wasn't even alive when this song came out, but yes, something about the music and something about the song, meaning aside, is sad. I can't describe it. It is powerfully emotive.

The best work of U2 album!

BEST SONG OF THE PLANET 👌👌👌 THANK YOU VERY MUCH U2👏
A hauntingly beautiful song about the horrible reality of addiction.
I loooove this song but whenever I play it at one of my solo acoustic gigs, no one recognizes it. They only seem to know the bigger U2 radio hits? :)
+Jimmy Winn A Lyrical Masterpiece..
+Jimmy Winn lol thats the way it is with most of u2s best songs
+Andy Gelder it is a melancholic place, if you, have been there..difficult to let go of....ever. Still trying.
Yep, track 5 from the A side is not well known, but one of the greatest songs...
Jimmy Winn that's okay, you know what it is
Joshua Tree shows how strong of a lyricalist and vocalist Bono is.
it doesn't get much more touching than this, u2 is just a work of art!
first time i've listened to this in ages and it still hits the spot.
I'm being serious here...no band does great songs like this anymore.👍
Love this song too much!
This song is a gift to humanity.
I Wonder why young people don't listen to this. Happy New year 2024.
This song is about being a dopefiend, of which I was one for 16 years before I got clean. I never used a needle tho' thank God. I was a pillhead. Same addiction, less chance of a ton of physical illnesses is you don't i.v. dope tho'. Great song!
+DR. HOUSE M.D. I will never do heroin again. I have two months clean after 22 years of using. Music is my drug of choice now.
Agreed. Stay strong my friends!
Congratulations on overcoming such a disastrous thing. I witnessed my friend go through hell while she was withdrawing from heroin so i saw with my own eyes how hard opiate addiction can be.
DR. HOUSE M.D. I’ve been there! Congratulations
it's a vicious cycle
Powerful lyrics that stimulate your senses and literally "moves you" into the non linear realm of sound, vibration and energy.
Sometimes I feel this way. Today I was listening to the song. Trying hard to not get sucked into the poison River. I'm running just to stand still ❤
U2 is just legendary
This is story of my life. stormy life. Theres hope
+Michael Mcrobert Jesus Christ is my new higher power. I was a Heroin Junky for 20 years.

Oh my God, tanto tiempo que no escuchaba esta canción, desde los 90 y algo 😭😭😭
Totally bombast-free yet strong like a fist to the gut. Very powerful song
A few days off it again after 12 years of addiction. Getting too old for this shit but heroin tends to decide how what's left of your live will pan out
Please don't give up... good luck to you!
Peter hume
How did you do Peter? Its been 2 years since you wrote this.
Stay clean, Peter! I wish you the best of luck.
And so she woke up
Woke up from where she was
Lying still
Said I gotta do something
About where we're going
Step on a steam train
Step out of the driving rain, maybe
Run from the darkness in the night
Singing ha, ah la la la de day
Ah da da da de day
Ah la la de day
Sweet the sin
Bitter the taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out
You got to cry without weeping
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice
You know I took the poison
From the poison stream
Then I floated out of here
Singing ha la la la de day
Ha la la la de day
Ha la la de day
She runs through the streets
With eyes painted red
Under a black belly of cloud in the rain
In through a doorway she brings me
White gold and pearls stolen from the sea
She is raging
She is raging
And the storm blows up in her eyes
She will
Suffer the needle chill
She's running to stand
Still.
We know. It’s like, all over the screen
Are you blind?
May be my favorite song
Amazing beautiful song..!!!
running to stand still wow i really like the lyrics
Great song
holy fucking moly this song is good. the lyrics are just perfect!
The Zoo TV (live) version is also incredibly moving.
You know I took the poison from the poison stream then I floated outta here - Gives me chill bumps!!

Masterpiece!
i remember listening to this as a teenager, having heard nothing else like it before, while all my mates were into spice girls or whatever.
This song hit me like a ton of bricks. Nothing like anything I'd ever heard before or since...genius!
This music is only for the U2 really fans. It's overshadowed by so many hits at Joshua Tree album. It's amazing how this song is timeless
One word BEAUTIFUL 🥰
Thank you! :)
the beauty in all of their art is that it touches Us all and in some ways connects Us. Peace be with Us.

My fav song. I'm crying
