Gidday you good bloke. Love your videos and infectious laugh. I started collecting as a kid, many moons ago, when my dad gave me his old stamp album as well as mu uncles. Was also given one of those cloth bags of stamps on paper that used to be sold to start collectors off. I muddled through it for a few years, going to the local book shop to look at the NZ stamps in little plastic bags that we could buy.
I left all of this behind when I joined the Navy and I can't remember ever seeing my stamps again. I got back into stamps when I got married as my father in law was a postmaster at a Post Office Savings Bank in Auckland. He had been collecting for years and as postmaster, he received the new sheets of stamps and got to look through them for errors etc. So his collection was full of stamps missing colours, different perfs and errors. Would have been worth a bit.
So I started again and was an avid collector of everything. So I ended up with an accumulation of stuff.
Sadly he became my former father in law and never saw him again and has since passed on. No idea what happened to his collection.
My hobby went into recess for a while until a friend of mine gave me his collection which was mainly NZ but was in a nice flash album. Got me going again and am in a stamp club here in Blenheim where I get circuit books passing through my hands from time to time. I prefer early NZ and Australia, US commemoratives for some strange reason, and shipping. Now I have been stuck on Ebay buying covers of US submarines especially SSN and SSBNs. One of your SSN's visited NZ when I was in the Navy and the ship I was on at the time was host ship during their visit. There was an anti nuclear protest fleet as it entered the harbour and we were one of the escorts. Pintado (the sub) hosted us in Seattle when we visited later in the year. NZ is now and non-nuclear state. So no more visits.
Enough about me. Carry on, please.

I got started pretty young, mostly with the US yearbooks which my parents gifted me. But I would say I became a serious collector around the time I as 16, when my grandmother passed on my late grandfather's collection to me. He had collected as a child and then also as an adult, mostly culling from business correspondence until he had enough income to invest in some of the more expensive issues he liked. I picked up the torch from there, working to complete the Silver Jubilee omnibus series issued for the 25th anniversary of the reign of King George V. It took me a few years, but I did manage to complete his collection, and it's one I can't ever see myself parting with!
Since then, I have branched out into many different areas. Currently, my focuses are France/French colonies, as well as the various issues of the Portuguese empire.

Good evening Mr Silk. Another great episode of your stamps, its a great collection. I started my stamp collecting in my later years after having a serious illness, and i needed a hobby which made myself sit down and relax. Enjoy your weekend and look forward to the next episode.

After curating two collections, I have decided to start my own small collection of old ships, older trains, and USA "prairie schooners" (covered wagons). So we have a collector's niche in common.

I found that selling stamps and having a dealer store on Ebay was vital in learning about identifying, grading and pricing stamps. Buyers and shoppers will quickly be your teacher if you make a mistake or value something poorly. It really is a great education that is free and even helps pay for your hobby! I have learned so much.........from paper identification and color shading to detecting counterfeits and repairs. You also need to invest in a modest collection of reference materials and tools, at which point your knowledge base really begins to blossom! I also do not use anything except high quality stackbooks to store my collection. I find they are a VERY secure and protective method. I also find good quality albums to be HEAVILY overpriced and for me, not worth the investment. I also enjoy the aesthetics of arranging my stamps differently from time to time......I guess I am weird ;-)

France is one of my favorite countries to collect and getting a used Minkus Specialized album is a great way to get into more advanced country collecting without breaking the bank. I started collecting as a kid by example from my dad - he had lots of duplicates to share. I used to provide the labor to soak kiloware that he purchased and I got stamps in payment. My first albums were the Scott Minuteman US and Canadian albums. Stopped collecting for a while and then fell back deep during the pandemic lol

Just to expand on my previous comment about buying collections and reselling on Ebay......I recently spent about $100 on a collection and found a mint plate block of Scott 634a and sold it to a dealer of about $500. So yes, it can indeed be a treasure hunt, too!

Absolutely beautiful album, and without even causing a small dent in the bank. The album is really of such quality that it begs to be restored. I must say: the more I see of French stamps, the more lovely I start to think they are. I also particularly like the French colonies' stamps I saw so far. I always take heed of your advice to focus, and find a focused project from the start. It is just so difficult to do!!!! Too many pretty and interesting stamps calling you off the path. Thanks for another enjoyable video!

A great buy Mr Silk. I started collecting stamps thru' my father who got the bug thru' his father before. It certainly gets into your blood doesn't it! Your France collection is fantastic and as a starting point of US$25.00 is even better! I started collecting France this year also, mainly due to their lovely engraved designs they use so much. Also, their large 'Art' type stamps that you also seem to enjoy. At the same time as starting a France collection I began a French Polynesia collection as well, both new collections are coming along really well and I am learning more about these two countries at the same time. Keep these videos coming, I look forward to watching them as you produce them. Cheers👍

Hey there! I'm hoping to find a community here for some advice about getting into philately. I've inherited my grandfather's stamps and have fallen in love with the hobby! Now I am wondering how to go about organizing them.
I like the idea of using an album, so could the Harris Statesman Worldwide be a good beginner-level choice? My stamps are from all around the world. I was thinking about using a nice stockbook for all the stamps that don't have designated spaces in such a relatively limited album. As I don't know how many stamps of each country I have, I'm hesitant to start putting them all in a stockbook.
I'd be so happy to hear some of your opinions.

    • @silkontheweb
      @silkontheweb  Před 6 měsíci +1

You've come to the right youtube channel! And congrats on finding a great hobby... I bet you'll find it endlessly rewarding... I think going with a worldwide album is a great first step, my only counsel would be to use mounts (both because they're fun, and they protect the stamps). It adds an expense, but it'll pay off in a feeling of accomplishment as you build your collection. My other piece of advice is to check out the other videos in my Beginner's Guide series... there's hopefully some good info sprinkled into the laughter... happy collecting!

Hey buddy. You said you collect trains ships and mountains. How many trains do you have. Do you know about how many approximately are out there to be found. 50? 100? 1000. ? Millions? I love trains. I wanna start a topical collection off them too
