  • Here's my version - I intentionally didn't listen to The Shadows version before I recorded this. I wasn't interested in copying it note for note.
    I recorded the tune in Garageband playing a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster. For the video, I used a Canon Vixia R800 camera, a Neewer dimmable bi-color light, and edited it in Final Cut X.
    Here's the backing track:

      I started playing the stuff around 1963 when Fender products were still new and affordable. Actually, my first instrumentals were Dwayne Eddy stuff, before Dick Dale's Miserlou. .

      Good question. The original version was recorded by a British guitarist named Bert Weedon and later recorded by The Shadows (who had the huge hit). My guess is that Jerry Lordan, the composer, had guitar in mind when he wrote it in 1960.

    I don't have a Jazzmaster, but a Fender Jaguar. However, I play Shadows music on either this Jaguar or on the Six Bass and even on a Les Paul and a Steinberger headless guitar. I never cared for *that* sound. It has always been my goal to play any music the way I like it. But again, a fine rendition!

      It's pretty good - not to say it never goes out of tune of course. I gigged with it over the weekend and it did really well. One thing I have noticed is when I put the guitar down, and then pick it up again, I need to retune 2 or 3 strings. Not sure why. My Telecaster doesn't do that.

      @anotherheadlessdemo  Před 4 lety +1

      I've never owned a Jaguar, so I can't really say much about those. I have two Jazzmasters; the Squier J Mascis and the Classic Vibe. The CV sounds more authentic but the JM has a better build quality. Here's my review of both:

    • @anotherheadlessdemo
      @anotherheadlessdemo  Před 4 lety +1

      The J Mascis has a Gibson style bridge (very solid). I do have a CV as well and I'm trying figure out how to make it more stable. I have been lubricating the nut (which helps), but I haven't taped the bridge (yet). I hate the bridge, even with the Mustang saddles.

      I've never owned or even played a Fender Jazzmaster, so it's hard to say if it's worth the extra money. I do know that J Mascis has used the Squier version on tour, along with his vintage Jazzmasters. That says a lot I think.

I've had a Gibson Less Paul for nearly 30 years now and have always played LP style guitars with humbuckers... but think it's time for a single coil Fender change! Obvioulsly the original Fender version is build with finer woods and one would suppose that it has a general higher quality build... but i'm well impressed with this Squiere JaszzMaster... I think it's the top of the range of the SQ's and comes with the Fender JM pickups... anyway, great tone... thanks and happy surf playing! :)
