John Reilly & Friends: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- It might be easy to dismiss a music project from actor John Reilly, but that would be a huge mistake: Reilly is a fine singer, especially when he gets a hold of old-time material, and his guitar work provides a perfect foundation for these church and porch tunes from America's past.
Reilly's eclectic choice of collaborators speaks to his passion and dedication: Tom Brosseau and Becky Stark are no strangers to folk tradition. Brosseau's striking voice was first heard on NPR in 2006 - he performed a Tiny Desk Concert of his own last year - while Stark is a performer and a singer known to many as Lavender Diamond. Her voice fits in sweetly between Reilly's and Brosseau's in a way that recalls her work in the country trio The Living Sisters. Rounding out this home-brewed acoustic affair is Andru Bemis on banjo and fiddle, as well as Soul Coughing's Sebastian Steinberg, who plays upright bass with finesse and humor.
So turn off the lights, blot out the distractions, light a candle or two, and let the glow - and the glow of your screen - transport you to country's past, when singers would all gather around a single mic. This is a band meant to play a Tiny Desk Concert. -- BOB BOILEN

I like to picture John C. Reilly singing lead vocals for John C. Reilly and Friends and I'm in the front row and I'm hammered drunk...
No doubt wearing that tuxedo t shirt
i appreciate this Talladega nights reference
Best comment I've seen on CZcams
Imagine knowing him as an artist first and then seeing step brothers one day and being like HOLY SHIT
Technically that is what happened, no?
Or that incredibly intimate documentary walk hard...
Acting and comedy are also arts
@@rstrid5505 ok, but you clearly knew what they were trying to say
I had only seen him in serious roles before seeing step brothers (Gangs of New York and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape).
Most people didn’t know him before step brothers, but he’s had a long history of serious roles.
And he did it all without a sense of smell.
John Stamos shake and bake!
Not nearly enough upvotes on this....
Wrong kid died!
Speak English doc we ain’t scientists!
He gone smell blind. Tonight we light a candle
So great that a uniquely American art form is saved from extinction.
'Church and porch tunes' is about the best description I've ever heard for these simple three chord songs - which, for all their lack of sophistication, capture a melancholy representative of the era from which they stem. They deserve to be performed live like this and not just exist as scratchy Lomax recordings in the Library of Congress. Brilliant work NPR - and hats off to John Reilly and Friends for keeping the fire burning.
Well said.
Perfectly said.
And he never once paid for drugs!
Not once!
Nooooot once
He is actually the songbird of his generation.....THAT good.
Never knew John Riley could sing. I really enjoyed this. He's got a very gentle voice and all three sounds very good together. This makes me want to listen to more music like this.
He was nominated for an Oscar for Chicago the musical.
Not to mention walk hard...
He was nominated for a Grammy for the Walk Hard Soundtrack.
Reilly is scary talented across the board - jeez.
Totally agree. I love the Renaissance gifts some people have, and have tried to do my best to develop those vestigial ones I have in me. Being ultra talented is a little like being a real-life "mutant". Hat's off to Mr. Reilly.
Definitely ❤
Watch him with the locals!
He has to be one of the most artistically talented people in Hollywood.
Seriously. He is absolutely beyond talented.
His voice kinda sounds like a mixture between fergie and Jesus
Classic!
Jesus Rodriguez?
The songbird of our generation...
Leave me alone Sarah Can’t believe he didn’t play Walk Hard
😂😂😂
Rock of Ages was amazing in it's grace. John was sheer perfection.
songbird of our generation
She was trying really hard to say she doesn't want to sing about Jesus while singing about Jesus. Glory to God for all things!
yeah and John said (might as well say) Satan (cause she doesn't want to say sing about God) and that surprised her. But I get her. It's so the atheists and satanists don't feel isolated from their music lol
“BruleGrass”
That's amazing.
I'll stop trying now.
Brodeo4K nice
Brodeo4K For your Health.
Ya dingus
If there were ever to be an O Brother Where Art Thou sequel, JCR should be in it.
Sounds great. I knew John Reilly had pipes back when he belted out "Feel The Heat" as Chest Brockwell in Boogie Nights.
Awesome call.
+WGBH Music With me it was Mr. Cellophane from Chicago. He played Amos perfectly.
+AngelWolfPlays I was beginning to think I was the only person who thought this.
I was head over heels for him in Chicago...
"Dewey Cox needs to think about his entire life before he plays,"
hate to fangirl, but that was one of the most absolutely perfect comedies I've ever seen, and no matter who i show it to , they crave more Cox
“Which is our other band” may be the best in-the-moment response to an awkward statement. Well played dude.
Just checked out Dr. Steve Brule and ended up here - just breathtaking. What versatility this guy has! And humility as well.
I just can’t believe he learned to play the guitar so good. Without having a sense of smell!

One of my favorite actors ... just happens to be a great folk musician as well. How can you not love John C Reilly?!!!
I love seeing John C Reilly and Matthew Mcconaughey play guitar and sing together!
Could listen to this all day long.
"John Reilley has to think about his whole life before he goes out on that Tiny Desk"
Can you tell me more specifically why?
@@user-pw4gw1zo5p its a reference to one of his movies
I have needed this ever since I first heard him singing on Dewey Cox.
They did great considering there was no room for activities.
No powers tools either
This comment deserves so much more.
Plays the guitar pretty well for not having a sense of smell either.
Sybok from Star Trek The Final Frontier is still alive and playing bass!
They sound so amazing. Brilliant! So good!
Its a treasure to have such gathering of great Folk musicians keeping the great Folk music going .. !!
This is good music in a day where authentic music is becoming hard to find.
Im getting Jeff Tweedy vibes on John, not only in the physical sense, but also in his manners and his singing. Love him.
what the what.. how have i missed Reilly playing old time music and Americana music like a pro over the last several years?! very cool
Reilly does two songs on an album of sea shanties called "Rogues Gallery", the whole album is amazing, his are particularly great.
Wow John Reilly actually has a really great singing voice. I didn't even know he played music! Heard him talk about it on the Maron podcast..

John is one is probably in the top 20 of my favorite humans that I don't personally know.
Dynamics being leveraged in music is a beautiful thing, and seems to be a dwindling art. So good to see.
Great songs !!! Thanks for those fellows !!
And Dewey, get us a candle...we're gonna light us selves a candle tonight

I would swear that I heard Wayward Traveler, the second song, in my church, 50 years or so ago. This is a wonderful group and I'm looking to see if they are coming near to me.
Glad I found this.....thanks
awesome music inside you John Reilly great band you teamed up with as well.
it's a good thing to honor the Gods of your ancestor's no matter your own beliefs.
Just stumbled over this Video! Lovely old time music! Well done! Greetings from Germany
This is so wholesome for the soul.
I've never been into this type of music, but I enjoyed this immensely. The harmonies were beautiful. And I had no idea John C. Reilly could sing.
He has became Dewey Cox. Love it.
But haven't you heard the news? Dewey Cox died.
become*
He has to go over his whole life story b4 he plays a show
SWEET BERRY WINE!!!
this completely blew me away
fantastic
John C Reilly has such a sweet voice, while speaking too, but especially while singing. I have been a fan of his acting for years but only just heard him sing for the first time on Dijon's, "The Stranger," with Tobias Jesso Jr. & others. So very warm & sensitive, reminds me of my grandpa before he got sick, though I didn't hear him sing very much, to my sadness.
So rad to see Andru Bemis in this concert! Good dude, great musician.
What a beautiful piece , wish I could star over new with my X.
This is very nice, thank you!
I want an army of didgeridoos- fifty thousand didgeridoos.
Love him!
god dammit dale that was beautiful
Love this. I spied John Reilly walking in Paris about three years ago near the Bastille. I wish I said "Hello," but my friend said not to hassle him. Now that I know he's a musician, next time I cross his path I'll invite him to jam with my group here in France. Good stuff... Roots Music.
So American, lovely, great voices, particularly Mr R
Really Lovely
🤓just made me smile 😊thank you !
I'm in awe :D
A Beautiful ride.
Beautiful
The eyebrows on that bassist are intense.
He looks a bit like Spock’s brother in Star Trek 5.
They flew away shortly after this was recorded

This is awesome!
thanks for sharing this
Wonderful!
BRINGO!
Fabulous 💓💓💓
This is wonderful
i love this
Great performance 🤯. Reminded me of the music from o brother where art thou
exceptional
You need only look at the strange mixture of severity and calm that comes over the faces of people singing vintage country and bluegrass to see that it’s a profoundly spiritual discipline
‘We basically are advocates for deathless bliss’
Very love ......
this is so dope
Great set! Love me some Tom Brosseau ;)
JCR is my spirit animal. Love him!!!
I really hope they make a single or put out a whole album beautiful Stanley brothers cover ❤️🙏
A proper artist, great stuff
reminds of the good ole folk of 60s and 70s
Love the harmonies. Blended beautifully! Love Andru Bemis, too. Great Michigan musician.
Looking forward to the Deathless Bliss and Morbid Angel tour coming in 2020.
The Legend of Cox is truly gracing our ears my good people
