So there are three Fate/stay nights, and one Fate/Zero (plus a bunch of other money grabs you don't need to worry about.) There's the original fsn (which is crap), a fsn Unlimited Bladeworks movie (which is even crappier shit oh god never watch this one) and then the two animated by Ufotable, a studio staffed by gods and the two shows featured in this AMV. They include Fate/Zero, and an Unlimited Blade works remake. Before this came out, I would have told you to watch the original fsn first, because even though Fate/Zero is a prequel, it's infinitly better than fsn, meaning if you watched it first fsn would disappoint you so much you would barely make it in. But since the Bladeworks remake came out ( which isn't amazing but much better than the original fsn) you should watch Zero first because Bladeworks doesn't explain any of the backstory, and so without the prequel first, you'll be confused. So Fate/Zero, then Unlimited Bladeworks (series not movie.)

Well, naturally the servants will typically have some kind of sad past. They came back for a wish to accomplish their ambitions after all... And the grail itself only selects those who desire something strongly. So... I would say that them having a sad past is a given?
