+mrkarlhey thanks very much. I would love to do more of this stuff, i just dont know how to go about it. I have a full hour talk properly prepared as well much better than this one!!
+Chris “Douggs” Mcdougall Either do I mate. I've been an avid watcher of TED and yourself (on a former channel of mine with a popular playlist heavily featuring you) for years though, and I think they'd be lucky to have you. Putting that playlist together over the years let me live the dream through you guys. It was a genuine shock for me when Ludo died because Jokke's stuff also featured heavily. Anyway, thanks for the memories and stay safe. Respect to all your late friends too. I'm sure they'd be proud.
I've been skydiving for 3 years, year round. Been working in skydiving as a coach and packer since last summer. I did my first 3 BASE jumps at Perrine last summer. Just got my first BASE container a week ago. I'm trying to take this slow and learn as best as I can. Keep it simple and make the best of whatever happens. Trust your instincts. We're connected to fate, and this 6th sense exists with us to serve us. We don't know what happens after we die, but let's just assume it's not nearly as beautiful as the existence we all share right NOW.
I only skydive and Im at 205 jumps, here and there I think about doing base but always punt the idea saying "Maybe later down the road." This video is incredible and very informative presented in such a true and honest way. Thanks Chris for the knowledge. Hope you are still teaching base for when the day comes that I feel Im ready.
Never heard a jumper with his experience give credit to my sport of Paragliding before like he has in this video. Much appreciated. Thanks for posting.
Douggs some good stuff there! I'm nowhere near BASE jumping but it's got loaaaads to do with skydiving itself! Hope you're all well, hope to see you soon!
Awesome talk dude. I don't base jump or skydive, but I really enjoy listening to people like yourself who do. You have such a unique perspective on life and risk. Embracing the danger, controlling what you can and trusting in the result. You are a truly impressive person.
Thanks for posting this. I've never jumped, but plan to and I'm glad I watched this. I feel your thoughts apply to many other sports without much margin for error.
This was really moving, I’d love to hear more of your talks you have a serious knack for it an absolutely smashed it. This can apply to so many different aspects of life.
Its obviously a different scale, but a lot of the things you said in this talk can apply to other extreme sports or hobbies. A lot of motorcyclists and mountain bikers would do good to hear this advice.
What an amazing video! I always wanted to know how people like Dougs and Dan keep doing this and while others seem to keep dying. Dougs gave for me one of the most humble and informative presentions of BASE you could ever find. He also admitted himself he pushed his luck at times. It's funny because there is a video where even Jeb said Dougs on the troll wall was doing super dangerous stuff, thats something coming from Jeb! Keep going Dougs!! Awesome video.
Awesome talk Douggs! Thank you so much for such an honest, down to earth and humble sharing! More experienced jumpers should do the same! I feel there are so many guys at the top level, and who so many new fliers emulate...and who certainly have a lot of knowledge, but are not sharing! Biggest points for me were... Don't rush, know your limits, and it's OK to back off a jump! Save some for tomorrow! --- Great advice! Hope one day learn from you personally. Safe jumping and keep teaching! We need it!
Such a good video Douggs - so many golden nuggets of information and psychological tips to give one a better chance of survival. So much of this wisdom is also very transferable to other dangerous activities (eg. motorbikes). Had I thought a bit like this, maybe the 21year old me wouldn't have done a 180 degree toggle turn at 100ft that ended in a helicopter trip to the ER and a backbrace for weeks - I had recently seen Point Break and thought I was Johnny Utah.. "young dumb and full of... " the medic in the helicopter soon brought me back down to reality. This video will undoubtedly save multiple lives even if it can't be accurately quantified as everything is very sensitive to initial conditions. Well done sir - you set the standard for BASE education. I am currently sitting on the sidelines from Skydiving as I have a young son - he needs his dad around more than I need to go jumping - yet I yearn to go. And base jumping wise, I still have yet to do one (I had planned to get involved in the 90s but always delayed knowing the sport would progres, equipment get better etc.) - but the goal now is to get into to it in my 60s when my boy can fend for himself - save something for the future right!! Knowing this motivates me to keep fit, supple, eat well for that challenge in later life. Blue Skies and on heading openings - SImon, France
Just watched this again. It's good to be reminded every once in awhile, even when you think you know you know it. You're a great teacher for the life of BASE.
That was an excellent breakdown how to minimize risk. I don't BASE jump, but the thought process can be applied to anything from riding a bike to BASE jumping. It's an everyday (sometimes every minute) action that one can take to ensure longevity. Again, excellent presentation and thank you for sharing!
Douggs.... What a great presentation! Kudos to you for sharing your experience...it's rare and so valuable. I used to jump with Rick and Randy Harrison but only out of moving objects. Lol! I have never based jumped. But I have to admit, I think about it often. If I ever did ... it would be after your training! Time for a TED talk!
Douggs - this is a great presentation and is relevant to so many situations not just skydiving and BASE. I agree with the other comments posted - you would be awesome doing a TED Talk. Also love watching your LTBJ videos too (One day maybe but got to get to C Licence first !!)

People, base jumping is not for everyone. Just because it looks nice cool and crazy you need to really think if you're prepared to enter this world. Start with skydiving, be very proficient and good in many disciplines and then do a self awareness session with your self and ask yourself if you really want to base jump.
Really appreciate this video. I'm new and super conservative, but at that almost 100 jump # where I see other people who started when I did started to push boundaries that I have no intention of pushing anytime soon and it's always nice hearing to experts tell you when they've backed off of jumps or made the decision to have a beer instead.

Wow. Being 15 years old and only having rope-jumped from a 72 meter bridge twice, this opened up my eyes. I never really considered just how high of a chance there is not to just mess up in one jump but mess up even after years of experience. I'm going skydiving when I turn 16 and hope to begin B.A.S.E jumping at 19 or 20. Thanks Chris for this video, it really helped me out. Stay safe!😉

"You don't have to rush, because you're dead forever"
“Respect the Doug who is old in a sport where most die young”
How far you've come. One of the few wise old men of BASE. Thanks for passing across your wisdom and experience to others in your amazing sport.
