    I will never forget the day a Caucasian woman tried to explain to me how my skin works and that, "black people don't need sunscreen, that's what your dark skin is for, the industry is lying to you, your ancestors were fine without it... " 🙄
    Skin cancer doesn't discriminate, everyone should wear sunscreen. Also, hyperpigmentation is best treated with prevention. My mum is 50 and struggles with it now.

    • @jeffdiggs7030
      @jeffdiggs7030 Před 2 lety +8

      You should say hyperpigmentation is best “avoided”with prevention not saying it’s best “cured”, because prevention isn’t used as a cure it’s used as a way to basically stop something from happening before it happens But I get what you mean prevention it’s better than treatment.

    • @BuddleDuddle
      @BuddleDuddle Před 2 lety +9

      I'm so sorry you went through this. My mother had melanoma, thankfully she caught it early enough to be cured with Moh's surgery. I also ended up having pigmented basal cell carcinoma at the age of 20 in the area where I hinge my hip upwards - the groin-ish area where not a lot of sun shines. And I use lots of sunscreen and cover up because I burn so easily!
      I'm always flabbergasted when I hear people advise other people to go out in high-noon sun to get vitamin D, which is when the UV index is at its worst. Idc who you are or what your color is, you avoid high noon sun when the UV index is at a certain level, especially at beaches as the reflection of the sun off sand can double UV exposure. Go out later in afternoons and early morning if you want to get that 15 mins of sun without sunscreen, but then apply, and take a vitamin D supplement. If you had skin cancer or a family history of skin cancer, I'd just avoid going outside without sun protection period. I'm now at greater risk for more basal cell carcinoma and other skin cancers because of this, and sun protection is vital in preventing any more of these cancers from surfacing. It is vital we protect ourselves, friends!
      OP, I hope treatment is going well and I hope you recover well!

      I think part of it is the way it feels on the skin. I HATED wearing it when I was younger because the one my mum bought was greasy, sticky, smelly and made my skin feel nasty, and it turned white and peeled off. I wear sunscreen now, but because I'm an adult I can choose a different sunscreen that doesn't feel nasty and sticky on my skin and that I actually like. If I'd had that choice when I was younger, I might've worn it, but it felt so nasty that I hated wearing it.

      My mom always told me to wear sunscreen and I did. Well, she overdid when I was younger to the point of me being more pale and not getting a slight tan (not talking about a darker tan), but my friends almost never wore sunscreen. Recently I noticed that their tanned skin looks more wrinkly and you can tell it’s damaged 😅 they are 20 years old… their face is young of course being only 20, but their body (tanned skin)… oh no😭 and shaming others for not being tanned enough/not tanning is so weird.

    Thanks James, I'm a Filipino and colorism is very much ingrained in our culture, being colonized by countries that has fairer skin than us pretty much warped our definition of beauty. Like having darker skin tone makes you look poor, or that having a darker skin tone makes you look less pretty, etc, etc. That's why majority of the skin care here pretty much has the word "Whitening". Thankfully this is starting to change, it's really slow but I think there'll be a time where we can all accept the skin that we're born into.

    Ive started my first legit skin care routine in my life. I'm 38 and have always had horrible skin. Skin so bad I've always hidden from the world. On the really bad days I even hide from my husband. Covid and masks wasn't a bad thing for me. I could go to town with my face hidden. I didnt know really anything about buying products tho. I tried everything that could be bought at dollar general and most of what was at Walmart. Think st ives, noxema, sea breeze, etc. Yea, it was bad. When u don't know better you won't do better. I ended up giving up and for several years only washed my face with some soap and water while hiding from mirrors. I'd be careful about the faucet in the bathtub, windows, water, anything that I might see my reflection in. Then I found one of your videos. I spent months watching and rewatching videos while taking notes. I then added some of Cassandra's videos. After lots of learning, I ordered some products from sephora. It's taken more than the usually few weeks to see change. Honestly, I was starting to lose hope. A month had passed with nothing and I thought if all this couldn't help me then nothing could. Then this week happened (month 2). I'm seeing change. Noticable change and I don't even know how to feel about it. If anyone else looked at my skin they would still see a mess but it's only bc they dont know what I was dealing with b4. I have a lot of scarring and dark spots along with acne. Even my scarring is showing improvement. My life is seriously about to change and I'm excited and terrified at the same time. I want to take some selfies. I dont have any. I've never taken one or any pics for that matter. I've always ran when cameras come out. I've been legit scared of cameras. Now I wish I would've pushed myself to take a pic when this started so I could show people just how much you've changed my life. I've made a vanity in my bedroom to keep all my stuff and have added a mirror. Tonight when doing my routine I was excited to look in the mirror to see what was going on. A lot of the brown, scarred areas are starting to turn pink and feel much softer than they did. My acne is half of what it was. You have truly been a miracle in my life and I can't thank you enough. You've given me all the info I need to fix my skin for free. You dont even nag for donations. Maybe one day I'll get brave enough to go over to Robert's channel to learn about and buy make up. Ive never worn make up but love it. It's never felt like something intended for me. This is the first time I've felt hopeful about the chance to enjoy make up. If you ever come to an event in the US please let us know in advance. I'd really like to have the chance to meet u and thank u in person. Hopefully by that point I can show off beautiful skin.

Have you had a chance to enjoy makeup yet??? I bet that would do wonders for your self esteem, on things like uneven skin tone and bringing out your best features! Sometimes just a bit of lipstick, blush and mascara can really make a difference! Hope you've come to terms that its ok not to have flawless skin, we all have texture or uneven skin tones in some way. Hugs!💗☺

      From Florida there, I worked retail in my twenties and we could always tell the tourists and when they came from the beaches to shop based on their varying shades of pink! Sometimes even with sunscreen it doesn’t matter how much you reapply, you’ll still get burnt. I’m a natural redhead, so the moon will burn me. 😂😂

    Before doing a deep-dive into skincare last year, I would refuse to wear sunscreen unless I'm going for a swim during the day. That was mostly because I hated the feeling of it on my skin and I hated the smell and I hated the white cast that would appear the moment I start sweating in my humid af country.
    Now I'm learning just how important it is and how there are so many non-terrible sunscreen options and I'm so glad I got into this community.

    The girl that popped the blister... YIKES! She went to urgent care and no one told her to NOT pop the blister?! I've gotten a second-degree burn before with a motorcycle, and you're NOT supposed to pop the blister, because the liquid inside is protecting the layer of skin underneath until your skin recovers. Even with me leaving the blister alone, i got a pretty bad scar (a part of my leg is discoloured), I can't imagine what kind of scar she's gonna get from popping it

    As an extremely pale girl, I've had so many sunburns in my life, and yes, they can definitely blister without any help from meds. Although my worse my blisters came from using expired sunscreen, which can apparently do the opposite and make you burn worse. I had blisters on my ears, shoulders, back, face, and my arms. It was awful. And yes, it was in Flordia that I burned.
    Sadly, my mom used to believe very strongly in based tans when I was a kid, so guess who was taken to the tanning salon as younge as eight! And who was encouraged to get a "base tan" at a salon all through out my teen years. I know better now, but it took me until I was nearly 30 before I started using sunscreen regular because I just didn't see why it was so needed for everyday use.

    Back in the late 90's, I was doing research for a veterinarian medical class paper and came across an article in a nursing journal suggesting part of the explosion in childhood allergies was not playing in dirt such as mud and keeping everything too clean and sanitized. I have to wonder about that too. I don't think playing in normal, back yard mud or bagged soil is really bad and could have exposure benefits...as long as the child doesn't eat it and you inspect the area for animal waste and lawn chemicals first, obviously. I haven't seen any research on it since that article but it would be interesting to explore.
